Vienna Final. Melzer bt Haider Maurer 6-7/7-6/6-4 to keep his Vienna crown

Andreas Haider Maurer was unable to close the match when serving 7-6/5-4 for the match but he couldn`t hold the pressure.

Inspite of the defeat it was a good week for Andreas overall.

Expected end of the FLUKE run. Melzer got completely robbed in the first set, which was very disgusting.

Massive shame that AHM choked so horribly serving for the match in the 2nd. Jürgen only had to win 3 matches  Some exciting stuff today though.

Unexperienced and his nerves paid off to Andreas who was unable to close the match serving at 5-4 in the 2nd set. Really a pity. It was a good week for Andreas overall.

Congrats for Melzer for the victory

Good match, always nice to see a "lucky loser" as a tournament winner but AHM didn't deserve the 1st set, he cheated (on purpose or not) his compatriot. I was shocked Melzer didn't ask for the hawk-eye, he had 2 challenges left. Should have been 11:11 instead of 12-10 in that moment.

^ He was out of challenges. That's why my thread titled him "idiot"

Are you sure? I didn't watch the whole set but I thought the umpire said earlier in the tie-break "Melzer has two challenges remaining" :o

Great Match! The last point in first set was a wrong decision from the referee and Haider-Maurer had the big chance at 7-6 5-4 and own serve. Congratulations Jurgen! It was a great week for me and all Austrian Tennis Fans.

what do you mean by cheating?

melzer managed to challenge exactly the wrong balls in the first set  he ran out of challenges before the last game (where he wanted to challenge an incorrect call, but couldn't). then he got an additional challenge in the tiebreak, wasted it again and had nothing left for the deciding point.

He was close to the ball so he could see that the decision of the lineseman was incorrect.

it's pathetic for Maurer when neutral spectator knows and waiting for choke in game when he will serve for the match . This was probably his only chance for the ATP title and he lost on this way

Man, that's gotta hurt for AHM. Who knows if he will ever get that close to winning a title again? He has a good number of years left on the Tour, but nothing is guaranteed. A win would have propelled him into the top 100 of the Race.

I think if he continue like he played against Berrer and Melzer then he will have the chance again. But you said it: nothing is guaranteed.

Insane number of netcords for AH-M today, just relentless.

Bad luck AHM. So close, but a great tournament nevertheless. Should be near the top 100 now I'm guessing, could make the cut off for AO if he kicks on for the rest of the year.

Hall of shame choke

Epic one, comparable to only few in the history, like PHM f.e.

Being totally in control and 2 DFs serving for the match is ultrapathetic

but the guy has future. his game is pretty much complete, though he'll rarely get such a zone streak soon

Melzer has been the first player since 1998 (Marcelo Rios in Munich) to take the title with only three wins :)

Congrats Jurgen. Deserved title after a splendid year. :hatoff:

Melzer has been the first player since 1998 (Marcelo Rios in Munich) to take the title with only three wins :)Hm, has there ever been anyone winning a title playing only two matches? Would seem unlikely though.

I saw once something like this only in doubles (walkover in the 1st round and the semifinal). Unfortunately can't evoke now the winning team :o
