Montpellier 2R: Fat Dave megachokes to Simon, loses 6-3 6-7(5) 5-7

Dave

Served for the match twice in the second set.
Led **5-4 in the tb.
Was up a break in the third.

Can't make it to QF in a 250 tournie indoors against a player who has seen much better times.

Nalbo is done

This match was insane.

What a fight by Simon. But Nalbandian was playing horribly from 5-4 in the second set. Up till that point Simon wasn't in the match at all.

ALLEZ GILLES! Not really a choke just a tank. Nalby let a no-call on a Simon shot bother him even though he won the point. Many chances for overrated David to win even in 3rd set, when he was up *4-2, 40-30.

Watching Simon play tennis is just great when he's on his form.

I don't know if it was quite a choke, as Simon played really well when behind and came up with some big serves when needed. But David made tons of errors throughout the match, especially the second set and end of the third. Simon just kept the ball in play enough, hit some great counterpunching winners, and made Nalby come up with the plays, and he failed to execute. Remember this is his first tournament in a while, so great play should not have been expected.

Great competing and fight from Simon, thoroughly deserves the victory.

good for the game!!!!!!

simon showed his fighter spirit, and he played his heart out when it got close. really happy for him, he is ending the season way better than he started it.

Bundy what a fix to give Simon some points in Montpellier.

This match was low quality in general outside of the pretty good first set from Nalbandian. Simon wanted it more and that is what made the difference.

(emphasis mine). Lots of errors when you're ahead and need to close the match = textbook definition of choke in my book.

nalbandian had this match won so many times and as usual struggles to serve it out but he really outdid himself today, his serve let him down in the crucial moments.

what's dissapointing is that he was playing really well the first set and a half and deserved to win this match.

Typical Nalbi stuff, choke master. He will never get back into the top 20 even.

I don't think he made the errors because he was choking. He was making the errors because he wasn't playing well and was being forced into them by Simon.

Chokechokechoke. Nalby was dominant, except when...

Serving for the match
Serving for the match again
**5-4 up in the tiebreak
*4-2 up in the third.

Great drama though.

I guess Fat Dave just needs some more court time - mental sharpness usually doesn't come out of nowhere (which is what made his Washington run so freakish).

He was dman good when his game was on though, hope he can find it for another Paris run :-) Or maybe even Basel, that's a similar court to here. Fed-Nalby epic final, I drool at the thought.

I don't think he made the errors because he was choking. He was making the errors because he wasn't playing well and was being forced into them by Simon.

He was playing well all of the first set, and the first part of the second and the third. He started playing horribly when he had to close it out. Simon didn't even have to improve his game, just had to hang in there as he usually does.

This match is why Clownbandian never amounted to anything. One of the most talented players, my ass. His flashy game is only fit for 30 second highlight reel, otherwise it's all unforced errors and WTA-style choke. He should retire already losing to pushers like Simon. Disgraceful.

Yeah, I bet every casual tennis player would love to be as good as Fat Dave. But he's a pro, playing against best players in the world, not geezers in the tennis club near my house. This guy was proclaimed to be one of the most talented players of the decade, a potential slam winner. So far he has failed badly in that department.

Cool in crisis,Gilles gave his heart and soul in a hopeless position. Nalby melted mentally, fretting over a few calls, and making it easier for Gilles to seize the initiative with poor body language, average serving amongst other things. Gilles showed tenacity, and solid play, whilst watching Nalby self destruct again and again, and just hung tough.

Well done Gilles:yeah:

A bit dramatic here. It was more like Simon just hung in waiting for the inevitable - a rusty Dave who outplayed him for 1.8 sets (and not motivated by DC) to choke, crack and choke again. Simon can be a fighter but today he really didn't have to dig too deep. It was Nalby's to win or loose and unfortunately he lost it big time.

I actually thought Dave would loose the 3rd set about 6-2 so surpirsed he hung in there so long after the major choke.

I thought he played well in the first set, for the most part, but the second and third sets, I didn't think he was playing too great. His serve was less effective, and he was making more errors. Simon wasn't playing great himself. I mean, he did croak a bit when the match was there for the taking, but it wasn't as if the signs weren't there. Also Simon, as you said, hung in mentally, and cut back on his errors, but he himself played good points when he was behind, so he deserves some credit.

All players choke sometimes (see RF the so called best player choked vs Delpo in USO final and vs Djok this year USO semi)
Nalby is not the only one to lose close matches...Monfils vs Fognini RG 2010..etc...he'll play better in Basel, there's Hawk Eye there..it'll avoid him to b irritated by umpire's calls
