Ideas to improve the YEC

I have noticed that the once very prestigious YEC is sadly viewed as being of little more importance than an ordinary TMS event among tennis fans. What can be done to restore some of its lost esteem? These are my thoughts.

* Get rid of the boring and confusing group stage - KO from the get go. :rocker2:
* Make all rounds best of 5 (tiebreak in all sets).
* Invite the top 16 instead of just the top 8 - not enough rounds otherwise.
* Give the winner a ridiculous prize check well in excess of any slam's.
* Do something about the name - 'The ATP World Tour Finals' bl**s. :ras:
* Do not move it to a country without a rich tennis tradition ever again. :cuckoo:
* Always host it indoors so it stands out among the major tournaments.
* Market it agressively - most casual fans probably don't even know what the ATPWTF is.

Now you may chime in...

Seriously

1. Kill the round robin and make it 1 loss is out
2. Make all matches best of 5 as an "Top 8 players Grand Slam" The points and Prize money are being paid as such anyway

2009

Fed vs. Soderling
Murray vs. Del Potro

Djokovic vs. Roddick
Nadal vs. Verdasco

All GS winners for the year automatically qualify. If they're any GS winners outside the Top 8, A guy wil get bumped off. There will also be 8 alternates just in case of injury of the 9-16

Serial posters only, please! :(

* Introduce a 25s serve clock... :drool:

Top 16 would be a good idea if they were to get rid of the RR format. It would at least make things more interesting because at least the guys ranked 10-20 are often jockeying for ranking points, unlike the guys at the top where there are often huge gaps between the top two/three/four and everyone else.

If they keep round robin, go back to BO5 for ALL matches.

Also, seriously, change the name. "WTF" is a horrible acronym.

Alternate the surfaces - grass, clay, decoturf every year.

At least a best of five final. It is the last match of the ATP season.

What are you talking about. I suggest this tour to be cancelled, it makes top players prone to injuries cause they play top players at the end of the season and you want to extend matches to 5 sets. 5 sets are only suitable for grand slams.
I like this tour cause there are many good matches but you have to remember that the players are human and it is so exhausting to play 5 sets especially at the end of the season.

Actually I'm agreeing with the OP on all accounts

Just rotate it between clay, grass, indoor carpet and hardcourt outdoor every year and rest all is fine. I still can't understand why its always held on one surface when whole season is divided into so many surfaces.

And where would those clay and grass events take place in November that would fill the seats and make sponsors + players happy? Indoor carpet in november is not a coincident. Think outside the bubble.

Clay in Buenos Aires or Sao Paulo. It's not that hard to have an outdoor event in November.

i think it would take too much effort to rotate every year from South America to Australia(grass, maybe?)to Europe and USA.
I would like to see an YEC on clay or grass but I'm ok with indoor carpet, too even if I'm not a fan of the surface. I think it deserves an important tournement now that Madrid is gone and Paris has changed surfaces( as I read on MTF, I'm not really an expert :o)

It should be held in a city that already has a gs.

It was an awesome event last year.

London did a really good job though the some of th jazzy lights and shitty music was a pain in the arse at times .

If Fed or Rafa had won it would have been declared a unequivocal success but because Davy kicked ass it must be "MM".

Best of 5 final and surface rotations are decent ideas though.

The rest of it is fine.

It's MM because it's not best of 5 for an event that is proclaimed just below a grand slam :o

It's well known that Fixer can't sustain his level over 5 sets, that's why he's good in Masters but never made a single slam final :o

Surface rotation would be horrible! There's already majors on outdoor hard, clay and grass... Please let the second best thing be held indoors. Is that too much to ask for?

I don't agree that surface rotation would be horrible Mjau.

It's not fair every year the same surface, it's boring, in fact.

Best of 5 matches?

I don't think so, the players wouldn't agree with that.
They already play a lot.

What's not fair is having ZERO of the 5 most important events indoors! As if the tour wasn't homogenous as it is. Why do you wanna make it worse?

Perhaps RG and Wimbledon should introduce surface rotation as well to make it easier for non-clay and non-grass specialists to win them? All in the name of fairness of course.

These players are professionals and millionairs who should manage to play 1-3 sets extra in 1-4 matches at one tournament... The players of years gone by did it...

Indeed.

But knowing the ATP, they would probably find a way to change it to the ROFLMAO or the LOL.

I agree with you in parts.

I know that events indoors are few.
If you put in perspective, grass events are very few too (and I love grass, I suppose you love too).
Do you think it's fair a ton of events in hard court?

Why some events that are played in HC don't change to indoors?

But WTF is a special tournament.
It's not a normal indoor event.

If you want the best players wanting badly this title, I bet a surface rotation, changing the cities too, would be a killer.

Think about it.
Every year, a surface, a city, big prizes.

I agree with you, I want best of 5 too, but I just think that the players will scream, don't you think?
