Biggest surprises of 2010---what were they?

I'd say witnessing the freak marathon of Isner vs. Mahut at Wimbledon was far beyond a surprise. But so was seeing Thomas Muster make a comeback at over 40, John McEnroe starting his academy in NYC, seeing Fed lose matches to Gulbis, Montanes and Berdych. No Americans in top 10 for first time since 1973. Loobie playing lights out tennis to win masters series in Indian Wells. Mardy Fish losing 30 pounds. Lot's of surprises, can you think of any more?

The Berdych breakthrough.

It may be to the media, but 2010 isn't over yet.

i knew nadal was going to conquer new york so that was no surprise for me.

ryan`s performance at the open was a pleasant surprise.

the greatest surprise of 2010 is Dr Hi Rise (Isner). he did well for himself.

Harrison was a decent surprise but I saw him in Newport and Delray and win two wild matches in qualies so him beating Looby was not really a shocker, he is very talented and smart and coming into his own.

Maybe it's a surprise that the young guns like Tomic and Dimitrov have struggled so much.

That's a surprise?

It was NID that Federina supporters would flood the forum making excuses and trying to downplay Nadal's success.

Yeah OK.

Second for me was Federer losing in the QFs in two majors, to players (well, one of them anyway) who he'd never lost to before.

Berdych was the biggest surprise for me. Everyone knew what he is capable of doing, however he has been a disappointment at slams for someone who has some beautiful shots. Beating Federer twice, reaching the semi's and finals at RG and Wimbledon respectively are great achievements. I hope he continues to deliver in slams during the next season as well.

He has one of the most effortless forehands in tour.

hilluis

When everything is going well, Berdych is difficult to beat. But I dont see him as a fighter... just look at his Davis Cup record.

1. Isner - Mahut match going to that distance.

2. Soderling beating Fed for the first time and that's in a slam thus breaking his 23 consecutive SF streak.

3. Nadal finally winning USO and losing only 1 set in finals.

Soderling not losing any ranking points at RG 2010. Not the biggest surprise but didn't expect it at all.
Surely huge kudos to Isner&Mahut.
Fed not reaching some slam SF's.
Great RG&W for Berdych.
Nice clay season for Verdasco.
And Nadal...well.. probably not a HUUUGE surprise but the significance of the achievement deserves a mention, gratz.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Fish's resurgence.

The guy had just been out injured for five months and was out of the top 100, could anyone predict that this year he'd become a fitness demon, beat Murray three times, win two titles and reach the final of a Masters Series? Anyone?

It's something that isn't really connected to tennis players, and Odesnik is a small and scrawny guy, not someone you would suspect at all.
