Safe qualies for Axel, 6-2 6-1 and 6-0 6-1 wins.

He plays Sidorenko in the MD, if he wins he will face the winner of Pospisil/Andujar, both in great form.

Interesting tournament and we could have a Granollers-Andujar rematch of Bucharest in the final. Could be another comedy with Marcel going nuts.

Quite difficult 2nd quarter of the bottom half of the draw especially for Andujar and his first round match against Pospisil whose flat shots and attacking game can give him a lot of troubles. And Sidorenko can be a problem in a potential 2nd round. Hajek would be not exactly a piece of cake in a potential 1/4 clash not to mention Ramos Vinolas or Gil in a potential semifinal :bolt: .

On the upper side of the draw Riba may find some troubles on Benoit paire but he is my favourite to be one of the finalists if he can display his best tennis again.

Good luck for Pere Riba and Jaroslav Pospisil

The draw got quite a lot better with Granollers and Gil entering the event with WCs. I'm guessing, based on the way he's played of late, King Oscar will make the QFs at least. Patience potentially in the 2nd round could be difficult for Granollers.

Riba is the favorite to win the second section, but potential matches with Rufin, Ouahab and Paire could be very difficult.

The third quarter is difficult to predict, pretty open for anyone to take. I hope Fred does, he has two good rounds on paper, but he can and has lost to anyone. Ramos-Vinolas is always dangerous is Spanish clay challengers.

Pospisil v Andujar is a good R1 match, both guys have really good form. Hajek has two good rounds, hopefully he can do well here, he needs the wins.

Good luck to all of my favorites, hopefully the matches end up as competitive as they look as if they could be if they come to fruition.

Andujar is disgusting; like all the players that retire on 5-0 or 5-1 second set
they're really the worst of tennis
we don't need this disloyalty
to me Andujar is shit like all the doped players and the false injured ones to upset their opponent
Andujar you're a fucking jerk

Predictable. Pospisil had the game to turn things difficult for Pablo`s game. Not sure if Jaroslav can beat Sidorenko on clay.

Also good victories for Marcel and Pere, that should be a good match. Expecting Pere to win that match.

Definitely hopeful that ARV makes the top 100 before the end of the season, he has essentially nothing to defend now. He blew a great opportunity last week in losing to Veic in Napoli.

I don`t agree with you. Both players have different skills and weakness points.

Granollers has the skills to be a good player but he proved aswell that he is mentally too weak. Of course he can return to be a top 50 (not even he plays ok on clay but under my opinion he can achieve his best results on hard courts), although he is nothing extraordinary.

I agree with you that Riba is nothing special and that he is just a big fighter (not only on his tennis but on his mind too) and he can only produce good results on clay (till now). His schedule along the year was more than clear after he was close to reach the top 100 (focus on earning points on the Challenger tour and play some ATP tournaments). And I think he can be a top 50 player too especially with his performances during the clay season. Next year is going to be the key for him after he start playing a full ATP schedule.

Unfortunately I couldn`t see the match between them but due to the stronger and weakness point of each player I believed the mental strenght of Riba was going to prevail. Of course I proved me wrongly this time ;)

Extremely predictable result.

Popsickle rubs me the wrong way, so I'm not happy about this result. I don't really like him, but I do have to say, he's got WAY more game than I ever thought possible. I thought he sucked, but the past couple of months, he's been one of the best challenger players. I don't know where it's come from either, I guess just confidence.

Fred, please play Tashkent and gain more points. He's in the top 100 now, and a good result in Tashkent would solidify a top 100 finish at the end of the season.

As for the final, it's going to depend on Popsickle's energy level. If he's fit and fresh, it's 50-50. Good luck Marcel!

Disappointing, but look at the bright side. Fred is top 100 again :D Also he has an easy draw in Uzbekistan if he decides to play there to really solidify a top 100 spot. So this was a productive week, especially considering his level of late.

This. Totally agree. Gil is clearly realizing that he's playing poorly, so he skiped dirrect acceptances on ATP level, so secure Top100 for the end of season (very important to assure direct acceptance to Australian open). He is trying so, by playing small or asian challengers instead.
Afterwards, he will play ATP Montpellier and probably qualy for Valencia and Paris, and then close his season, like he did last year.
And IMO it's the right thing to do, since he needs badly the off-season for a lot of practice, he's playing just average, just enough to grasp a place at Top-100.
But anyway, good luck to him, he only needs about 40 points till the end of the season to get to the Aussie Open!

Yes, i'm not too worried about this lost, since I was expecting too. Pospisil is one of those low ranked (than Fred) players that Gil will always lose, and I am remembering another example: Martin Klizan. If we think twice, Gil done the minimuns. He was 4th seed, so SF it's all we can ask. And very nice draw for him til the SF, in Tashkent. I think he can end the season in top 80. Like I said before, he almost have zero points to defend until the rest of the season, and he will play in 2 big challengers next week, being an high seed in both of them...

I`m not being optimistic about Riba...yet :) I`m just being focused on the way Riba is carrying his career which is under my opinion in the right way. He is probably the best player on the Challenger tour and besides of some silly defeats he is proving that he is one step above of that level. The next two years he will need to prove that he can be a stable player of ATP tournaments, at least on clay tournaments on a first step.

I wouldn`t compare Riba with Robert as they are different players. Robert found his best tennis at 29 years old with all his experience on his shoulders which is a totally different situation to Pere`s one who is just 22 years old and three years on behind to show what he can do.

Pospisil def. Gil again. 6-2 4-6 7-6(5) Congrats to him.

This is another good victory for Pospisil. He is a weird case of a player whose attacking game with flat shots, good volleys and consistent serve would be adapted better to hard courts but to the contrary he plays much better on clay ones.

It seems to be that the experience is the key of this success on 201. Not sure what happened on previous years of his career.

Gil needs to recover his confidence and motivation back. Frederico is a player that can alternate some ATP and Challenger tour and be ranked between 50 and 120. I hope to see his best back :yeah:

Popsickle was leading 6-1 and *2-1 before the rain delay. Then he was 4-2 up in the 2nd set, but Granollers has won 8 of the last 9 games and is now leading by 1-6 7-5 3-0*

Marcel won 1-6 7-5 6-0

He has improved a lot since he's coached by the great Fernando Vicente :D
I hope he can get back to the top-50

Great duo :yeah:

Yes, he started to coach Marcel just after Roland Garros, and his results in singles have improved since then

and he's also a top-10 player in doubles :worship:

Superb from Marcel. He was actually a break down in that 2nd set.

Put 50 quid on him to win at 2/1 when he lost the first set - get in.

Any player that can beat Soderling from 2 sets down must have real quality so hope he shoots up the rankings.

Congrats for Granollers for the victory. It was another good week for Pospisil :yeah: Shame that he was unable to close the match when he was leading 4-2 in the 2nd set (according to Willoughby report as I didn`t watch the match)

Yup, but I don't see him finishing top 80. I think he'll probably finish like #92. His form has not been good and I don't think it's going to get better playing on hard court.

Yup, it's a smart strategy for anyone ranked in the area close to top 100 to play some challengers, with the weaker draws, get some wins and points on the board, and hopefully confidence with it. It's definitely the correct strategy. I just hope he can get those few wins he needs to make it happen.

Great comeback by Marcel!!!! As we saw in Bucharest, he's the ultimate competitor. He fights hard and wills himself to victory when not at his best. His form has definitely improved, he was struggling and in danger of falling from the top 100, but now he's been making it consistently deep in challengers, and did well in Romania. So happy for him, he works so hard and deserves it.

Vicente+Granollers make a great team, they have similar feisty attitudes, and they are both good to watch. Marcel is a really underrated player, I hope he continues winning and can translate these challenger results in ATP competition more often.
