Gongrats to Nadal and his fans. A great champion. Hope his reign will remain short .

Serving was the difference today. We saw the shades of Djokovic's top HC form but for some reason he stopped playing the winning game whenever he got ahead. Safe won't win against Nadal.

Good luck to winning your second Slam Nole.

But seriously... No excuses for Djokovic. Thanks to the rain he had one day off more after tough semifinal and rather beneficial for him rain-break at 4:4 (30 all) in the second set. IMO optically he looked better from the baseline but Nadal as usual was more consistent.

Very well deserved title. Once again proved many people wrong. Indeed, two greatest of all time playing in the same era. And Federer's right, even if I was him I would still be determined to train hard to compete because he knows he's in a very special era of tennis.

Ball bashing djoker had no chance against master class called rafael nadal.
Djoker was hitting the ball as hard as he could ...hoping everything goes in... He pulled some awesome winners in 2 and 3 sets.
Rafa... Ur breakpoint conversion was a joke... But you still made it through...3rd set should've been 6-1 to nadal.

Congrats to him, it is special to see how much it means to him. He is a true sportsman in this sense.

Nonetheless, unfortunate for the sport how he can easily win a fast-court tournament simply by not making unforced errors.

Murray is kicking himself somewhere and get well soon JMDP.

As for the match, Djokovic simply does not get enough free points from his serve. Roddick in mug form could have fared better than this.

The amazing feat Rafael Nadal achieving the golden slam at 24 is something Andre would've done at 22 he busted it from the getgo at all slams (not taking off Australia til 95, Wimbledon until 91, and years 93 and 97).

At the same time if Andre did that, he wouldn't have made his last slam final at 35. I'm absolutely sure neither of Fed and Nadal will make a GS final at 35

Congrats Rafa, with this win now you have a letimate GOAT argument over Pete Sampras which didn't exist before

Who would have thought Nadal would improve this much and become a total complete player?? Can he win 12 more slams before he retires??

Nadal is actually born a legend. That's what they said. Like Uncle Toni invented a frankenstein.

Roger made the most of his talent with good timing and opportunity plus great fitness (him not going anywhere when he was 19-21 helps him much in the long run).

I think we are just lucky to have this back-to-back absolute dominant players right now. Glory days for the 2 GOATs. After this, ATP will go downhill and we will have many one slam wonders. Then we will say, back then ..........

Anyway, it's a shame there was no special celebration. Just like when Aggassi won his career slam. That means, Nadal is not "there" yet. With Roger, there were special adverts by NIKE with trophy hauling etc. etc. etc (14, 15, 16). That's the respect for Roger I guess although some fans and comentators going overboard.

Whatever it is, it is number 16 (and counting) slams Nadal has to overcome. That's appears to be the most important fact to be top of the world.

Both of these guys just proved again that they are class acts after that match.

The first two sets were very good, very tense along with the third, thought it wasn't as high quality. Third set was a formality but well done Djokovic for fighting all the way. Huge accomplishment for Nadal, so pleased for him, what a year.

He's my fave, but for years I wouldn't have thought he'd win this tournament -- he definitely is a champion.

And he won the Open playing aggressively, which is what you have to do (and that wasn't always the case). I'll never enjoy his game on hard courts quite the way I do on grass and clay, but he was the best -- certainly the most ferocious -- player these two weeks.

Good to see Nole start to play well again, too. He seems to have grown up a lot, which is more than can be said for some hyped peers.

Great tournament from a great player.

Pure awesomeness! We don't have to endure Fedal Number Whatever tomorrow. I am grateful. Nole steps up in the clutch and send the GOAT home!

Was that Anna Wintour sitting next to Mrs. Fed? Is Mirka going to get the cover of Vogue?

Expected. Nole is a mug. Good for Rafa, however, although he hasn't won enough to be GOAT...yet.

I'm not kidding, tennis is dead. Every tennis record is tainted by this win. Nadull won the USO dropping 1 set, putting him with greats like Federer, Sampras, Agassi, McEnroe, Connors, Laver.

Does anyone really think Nadull is anywhere close to these great champions on fast hardcourt? Of course not, and yet there is no longer a way to actually show this using records. Nadull had his serve broken less than a dozen times, but does anyone actually think Nadull has a serve even in the top 100 of all time? Of course not, but for future generations his awful motion and time wasting before every serve will be a blueprint. Nadull is far from the all court champion that Federer is and yet his career grand slam goes down in the history books all the same.

Is it really a coincidence that no one achieved the career grand slam for 30 years and then all of a sudden 3 people do it, 2 in back to back years? Of course not, these are the achievements of a homogenized game, technology that has gone beyond the players themselves, and a lack of real competition at the top of the game. Today's game is like if baseball used aluminum bats + if basketball used trampolines, the technology has fundamentally broken the game.

Nadull may be a great athlete and a great fighter, but he is no tennis player. Many others have already covered on this forum the perfect storm of destruction to this fine game it took for Nadull to achieve the career grand slam, but today's win is the death knell for what remained. The classic game, that Federer had revived thanks to an unbelievable amount of natural talent, is dead for good. Ironically Nadull may soon be left in the dust as players become even more tall and athletic and careers burn out in a few years, but in time he will be seen as the catalyst for his own destruction. One day, when WTA is more varied than the ATP simply because of the physical limits of the women, you can look back on this day and this win and see where it all began.

Also, might as well ban me now, no point in posting on a tennis forum when the sport I love is unrecognizable.

Nadal had 49 winners to Djoko's 45. I don't think you can make the claim that he relied solely on having no errors. But, nevertheless, it's very good to have few errors. It demoralizes your opponent.

He hit a good amount of winners(as he always does) but I think more important is the fact that in the crucial moments he just doesn't miss. I mean he had a streak of like 50 points between UEs in this match. Makes it tough to beat him if you can't rely on your serve for easy holds.

You still think of the Nadal when he was 18, his serve is so much better now. He is a great hardcourt player, he worked so hard to improve his hard court game

What did Nadal mean when he said that he thanks Novak for behaving so well in the ceremony after losing the final? He often played Federer in the finals after which Fed cried,so did he mean what I think or was this just a coincidence? What do you think?

xargon
09-14-2010, 02:57 AM
Novak fought and won on the hottest day of the tournament, beat two home boys, beat Federer in five at a GS, made it to another final even though he was invisible to the media, not too shabby.

You could draw those conclusions, but I think it is safe to say that he was very impressed with how Novak handled it all, I'm sure some kind words were exchanged and Rafa even went over to speak to Djokovic at the chair before the ceremony began. I often find Novak to be a very gracious loser and here he was no different and I think Rafa was paying respects to that genuinely.

Maybe he appreciated Nole walking over to him to congratulate him. You know, after crushing defeats, Roger walks off court as soon as possible. Roger wouldn't have waited that eternity for Rafa to celebrate. Or maybe he appreciated Nole not crying on his shoulder during such a historic moment. Roger wouldn't have done that, either. Roger makes it hard for Rafa to celebrate by crying on his shoulder.

That's what I'd be thinking, anyway. And I, too, would thank Nole for being a man after defeat.

Magician if Nadal was not a good tennis player, he would not of made it this far. He had more winners than Djokovic and his ability to turn defense into offense in a single stroke is nothing short of phenomenal. Just because his style is unorthodox does not make his achievements any less valid. You may not like his style, but he does deserve to be up there with the greats. Tennis is a "sport" after all and discrediting someone because of his athleticism is nothing short of stupidity. Its people like you that give people the impression that tennis and golf are not sports, and should be thrown together with darts and poker.

1. He got a cake draw.
2. He did not beat the 5 time champ in the final.
3. He got so many night matches (got protected from heat by USTA).
4. He was more rested than Novak.
5. He probably would have lost to Murray
6. The courts were too slow
7. He was exposed for avoiding Federer's van
8. He was caught by Greg Garber for being mad Novak got some rest
9. Novak choked in the final.
10. Still cheated and got warned by the ref for slow play
11. he did not beat the defending champ.

while a loss in a grand slam final is hard for anybody, its harder for Roger because he is expected to win all the time. Losing is unchartered territory. So he is hard on himself and it comes across this way. Novak has already over achieved. He beat Roger in NY which didnt happen ever. His head is held high. SO it was easier to be a sport and laugh the loss off. Its diffcult to judge Roger because none of you have ever been winners really :). You guys wont understand it.
