The Invitational Event Thread

I'm very interested in all those invitational tournaments that were held before the ATP Tour Era (1990) and that are usually not sanctioned by the ATP. Those tournaments that interest me the most are those for which 4 match wins are needed in order to get the title. SO 16-man draws or 8-man ones in a RR+SF+F format.

The Antwerp ECC tournament has already been talked about on this forum. So I won't come back to it: http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=158526

So here's a list I have compiled and would like to check it out with you. If you know other than these, I'm always open.

Fréjus Carré d'As 1980-1981 (any other editions?):
1980 Final : Connors def. Tanner 6-0, 6-7, 6-4 [Aug. 4-10]
1981 Final : McEnroe def. Tulasne 6-2, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 [Aug. 3-9]

Dubaï Golden Tennis Tournament 1980 [Nov. 24-30]:
Final: Fibak def. Nastase 3-6 7-6 6-4 *

Melbourne Mazda Challenge 1980-1982 (any other editions?):

1980 Final : Connors def. G. Mayer 1-6, 6-2, 6-0, 7-5 [Oct. 8-12]
1981 Final : G. Mayer def. Teltscher 7-5 6-1 7-6 [Oct. 7-12]
1982 Final : Lendl def. Gerulaitis 6-2 6-2 7-5 [Oct. 19-24]

Challenge of Champions 1981-89: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Challenge_of_Champions

Toronto Molson Light Challenge 1981-1982(any other editions?):

1981 Final : Gerulaitis def. McEnroe 6-4 4-6 6-3 6-3 [Feb. 3-8]
1982 Final : Lendl def. McEnroe 7-5 3-6 7-6 7-5 [Feb. 4-7]
1983 Final : Connors def. Higueras 6-2 6-0 5-7 6-0 [Feb. 8-13]
1984 Final : Lendl def. Noah 6-0 6-2 6-4 [Jan. 30-Feb. 5]

Salisbury WCT Invitational 1981 [Mar. 2-8]** :

Final : Scanlon def. Amritraj 3-6 6-2 6-4 3-6 6-4

Jericho Hamlet Challenge Cup 1983-1989***

North Miami Beach 1981-1983 :

1982 Final : Connors def. Teacher 6-2 6-2 [Dec 15-19]
1983 Final : Connors def. Lendl 6-3 7-6 6-1 [Dec 14-20]

Stuttgart Classic 1988 : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1988_Stuttgart_Classic_%E2%80%93_Draw

Forest Hills: WCT Tournament of Champions 1990 :

Final : Lendl def. Krickstein 6-4 6-7 6-3 [Aug. 20-26]****

*This tournament had the highest prize money ever at that time. Wojtek Fibak earned 125000$. The 16 players were: Fibak, Nastase, Tanner, Dupre, Lutz, G. Mayer, Tim Gullikson, Amaya, Sadri, Smith, Dibbs, Vilas, Higueras, Ramirez, Noah & Orantes.

** The 1980 edition won by Borg is listed on the ATP website but not the 1981, if I'm not mistaken.

***became an ATP Tour event in 1990 in Long Island and then New Haven. Was a four-man invitational in 1981 and 8-man in 1982 if I'm not mistaken : http://www.nytimes.com/1987/08/23/nyregion/a-tennis-tournament-serves-some-aces.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilot_Pen_Tennis

**** The Tournament of Champions is listed on the ATP Website until 1989. In early 1990 Lamar Hunt announced the end of the WCT Circuit. The 1990 edition of the ToC would be the last WCT event.

Today I've accidentally found scorelines of an invitational event for 4 players in Tokyo 1983 ($250,000).

SF:
Borg def. J.McEnroe 6-4 2-6 6-2
Connors def. Kriek 1-6 6-3 7-5

F:
Connors def. Borg 6-3 6-4

It supposed to be Borg's farewell tournament.

Newport 1983 ($300,000; 8 players)

SF:
Connors def. Wilander 7-5 6-4
Mayotte def. Lendl 6-4 6-2

F:
Connors def. Mayotte 6-3 6-4 6-2

I don't know quarterfinals but I know that Mayotte beat there Noah.

The Tokyo event is the Suntory Cup, isn't it? I think it was a high regarded exhibition (there are clips on YT). But a 4-man field is rather small.

I'm also sure there have been QF in Newport but don't know more.

Great. :yeah:

Are you sure the Martin/Wilander match was in the 1st round because I don't have any evidence Martin played another match before encountering Leconte.
http://www.nytimes.com/1990/08/25/sports/tennis-showing-his-old-form-mcenroe-beats-gilbert.html

I'm still wondering why this tournament seems to be ignored by everyone. Atptennis.com has listed all the previous editions of the ToC. OK I know, 1990 was the year in which the ATP gained control over most open tournaments but yet in the ATP Tour era, they have listed the Grand Slam Cup which was invitational (0 ranking points), so why not listing ToC '90?

Incidentally, Lendl won another edition of the Toronto Molson Light Challenge in 1984, defeating Noah in the final: 6-0 6-2 6-4. I suppose it's the same format as in 1981 but need confirmation. What happened in 1983?

I'm not sure but:

"Todd Martin of Northwestern upset 1988 U.S. Open champion Mats Wilander 0-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the opening round of the WCT Tournament of Champions Tuesday night at New York."

Thanks Leo.

I've edited the OP because I made a stupid mistake that only I could have made. Peter McNamara did not reach the final of the Melbourne Mazda exo in 1981 because he was defeated by Gene Mayer in the semi (and I had the info !!). Now I've learnt that he went on to beat Teltscher in the final, too. (source: straitstimes.com)

Mayer and Teltscher seem to have been specialists of that event because they were the two players beaten in the semi in 1982, Mayer by Gerulaitis (he had a back injury that day) and Teltscher by Lendl.

So Krajicek is up 7/4 against Sampras actually. :yeah:

Sorry for the little mistake above. However hasn't Lendl beaten Chang in 1990?

Yes, Lendl beat Chang then, I don't know why I had written it incorrectly, anyway it's already fixed :)

Nice finds. :worship:

I remember that I came across some Adelaide Rio results:

The 1988 draw is on Wiki (4-man at that time): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennis_exhibitions_in_1988

In 1989 there has been a McEnroe-Wilander encounter but I don't know more about it.
Doubles Final: McEnroe/Woodforde def. Lendl/Wilander 7/6 6/2 (no idea about the exact date)

1990 (Jan. 11-14) Final: McEnroe def. Edberg 4/6 7/6 6/4

And I've just found out an interesting event at Wirral, 1988 & 1989. It was an event that hadn't been held since 1972. In 1989, McEnroe was beaten at the 2nd round by Jim Pughs. Becker won it on June 24 beating Peter Lundgren in the final 7/5 6/4. At the same time, Lendl played an exhibition in Wentworth where he was beaten by Jonas Svensson.
http://articles.latimes.com/1989-06-22/sports/sp-2748_1_martina-navratilova-breezed-wirral-international-warm-up-tournam

In 1988, McEnroe made it to the semi-finals and lost to Van Rensburg. David Pate and Leif Shiras were the other two semi-finalists. Chesnokov lost in the quarters to Van Rensburg. Andres Gomez and Johan Kriek also played.

Oh yeah, that's a very famous one.:worship: The Rosemont Lite Challenge of Champions. One of the richest exos. I think it has no cause to be jealous of Antwerp (though I cannot really say, wasn't born :bdaycake:). I gave the wiki link in the OP. I think the final of the 1982 edition was famous and controversial because that's the one in which Connors crossed over the net all the way to Mac's baseline and set a dispute (pointing the finger at him).

It's interesting because I had the info that Borg was down 0-3 against Connors in 1983. So that makes it 1-3 (and perhaps other encounters are still missing).

I have a few results from Stowe (July 22-27 1987):

Tim Wilkison had 5 mp's against Lendl (source: nytimes.com). The QF's were on the 24th while the tournament started on the 22nd, so I guess their should have been a 1st round.

In 1986 there was a first round doubles match between the Gullikson's and Connors/Glickstein won by the Gullikson's 6-3, 6-7(1), 7-6 (8) on Aug. 15 [orlandosentinel.com]

In 1985, Connors defeated Gene Mayer in the Final: 2–6 6–3 6–4 (Jul. 30-Aug. 4)

The tournament was a GP event between 1978 & 1983

Awesome scorelines in Stowe (Scanlon/Berger:worship:). Won't edit, that way your post still makes sense. :D

The four players missing in Jericho 1987 are Forget, Mansdorf, Wilkison and Vilas - if I'm not mistaken - but I don't know who each of them lost to.

Have another anecdote about Jericho. In 1985, Lendl and Connors reached the final. Play was suspended because of rain on August 25. The USO started the next day. Lendl won it. And both players agreed to resume play in Jericho on Oct. 10 (or 11?). Lendl also won.:D

Interesting - I wasn't aware of this event and Jonas Svensson was one of my favorite players back then. I attended the US Open in 1987 and saw his matches the first week. He played a couple of 5-setters, one of which was very exciting on an outer court where he came from behind to force the 5th set, which he then won in a tiebreaker. It was standing room only by the end - I also remember sitting right in front of a few of the other lesser-known Swedish players who were there in support (Christian Bergstrom comes to mind, plus a few of the other unseeded Swedes).

I'm sure this warm-up event was good for his confidence going into the Open.

Interesting there was an Ede tournament in 1991.

On P2 I posted Lendl's 2 victories there: http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=10379947&postcount=16
Great to see that Edberg's final was on a clay tournament though I know he could play pretty well on that surface.

The tournament seemed to be much longer back then. More rounds?

CSM, check out the OP, I posted a link towards the wiki page of the Jericho exo, which happens to be the New Haven ATP tournament at the present time and a NY Times article that introduced the 1987 edition won by Svensson.

Echoes, thanks for the NYTimes article link. It really was a high level field and kudos for Svensson for coming out on top - although as an exo and with the top names getting guarantee money, it's difficult to know how hard they were trying to win. But Jonas played a lot of tiebreakers that week, which probably was good practice for his run at the USO (he eventually lost to Edberg in the R16).

Also of interest to me is that Connors and Leconte played each other (with Connors retiring), because a week later I saw them play each other on the Stadium Court at the USO on the middle Sunday (it was either the R16 or Quarters) - Connors winning in 4 closely contested sets. And seeing Cash lose a tight match to Svensson reminds me that I watched Cash lose in the first round of the USO a week later to Peter Lundgren, also on the Stadium Court, in a night match that ended after midnight. Cash was coming in as the Wimbledon champion, so it was quite an upset at the time.

I read that Lendl led 2:0 in the final tie-break against Pate but when the American took an advantage in the tie-break, Lendl broke his racquet, so I suppose it was rather a serious tournament :)

This is really some unique invitational tournament!

Only long tie-breaks were played but in the formula of "sudden death 9-point tie-breaks": a player began with two serves and every exchange of serves was followed after two serves.

West Palm Beach, 1987

Lendl d. Cash 15-11
Edberg d. J.McEnroe 18-16
Edberg d. Cash 18-16
Lendl d. J.McEnroe 15-13

After two days:
1) Lendl 4-2
2) Cash 3-3 (84-80)
3) Edberg 3-3 (84-83)
4) McEnroe 2-4

F:
Lendl d. Cash 11-21, 21-18, 21-7, 22-20

Cash advanced to the final instead of Edberg because of better ratio, but the system of counting money was so weird that the money checks got Lendl, Edberg and McEnroe, Cash left the event cashless

It's interesting because I had the info that Borg was down 0-3 against Connors in 1983. So that makes it 1-3 (and perhaps other encounters are still missing).

Amazing that once he decided to retire, Bjorn lost his mental edge over Connors. Having beaten him 11 times in a row on tour, Bjorn lost virtually all his exos against Connors in '82 and '83. His two wins were a 5 setter in Ottowa in Sept '82 (1-6 6-3 6-3 2-6 6-2) and the RR win in Chicago in Jan '83...

I think there were already premonitary signs in 1981 (see the Wimbledon SF). The 11 win streak could have been bigger without the thumb injury in the USO final 1978.

To answer your question on the other thread, yeah I saw Lendl live on TV in the early 90's, though I was really young. He was no longer in his prime but still feared and respected, I think. I have vague memories of match against Brett Steven, that I discussed with my grandma. The Kiwi played quite well, I think, but I can no longer say where it was.

Lendl is still remembered in my country for his 5 wins in the Antwerp ECC, one of the greatest tourneys we've ever had. I remember my grand-father told me he was the only player to get the most valuable diamond racket for 3 wins in 5 years. I wasn't a fan but no I respect him for the innovations he put into the game and his unbelievable competitiveness.

By the way, additional scorelines that you will probably appreciate:

Wentworth 24 june 1989
F: Curren def. Wilander 6/2 6/4 (64 minutes)

Scorelines from the RR:

Svensson def. Lendl 7/6 6/4 (Lendl just on Queen's the week before, his 1st grass court title at age 29)
Wilander def. Hlasek 7/6 6/3

Curren advanced to the final at the expense of Svensson because of a better win/loss record in sets.

In 1952, 30 years before this tournament, Rosewall qualified for the US now Open defeating Vic Seixas, on the day Jimmy Connors was born. In 1979, he could still beat Butch Walts World #49. Nice finds.

In 1988, McEnroe made it to the semi-finals and lost to Van Rensburg. David Pate and Leif Shiras were the other two semi-finalists. Chesnokov lost in the quarters to Van Rensburg. Andres Gomez and Johan Kriek also played.

in regards to the 1989 rio international challenge played in adelaide there was no doubles final.

that mac/woodforde v lendl/wilander match was just thrown together at the last minute because pat cash had to forfeit the singles final to stefan edberg earlier on the same evening.
so basically tornament organisers just wanted to give the fans something to watch and organised that doubles match.

the mcenroe-wilander round robin match played earlier in the tornament finished 64 63 to mac.

i have both of the above mentioned matches on dvd and also another of the round robin matches between lendl and mark woodforde.
unfortunetly that match is missing the end with lendl up 64 43.
if anyone could help me out with the final scoreline of that one it'd be much appreciated.

btw prior to 1987 this event was played indoors in canberra usually around november.

Lendl vs Woodforde 6-4 7-6(6)

great,thanks for that.

i'll add some of the results for the 1985 rio international challenge played indoors in canberra sometime in november.
got these results from old newspaper articles i kept as a kid.

round robin matches:

lendl d nystroem 64 64
kriek d mayotte 63 67 64
lendl d kriek 63 63
mayotte d wilander 76 63

apparently kriek was filling in for the injured kevin curren.
by memory lendl beat mayotte in the final.
