So I am not in New York. And I can't tell what's happening there exactly. However, here is the weather update for today:

Considerable cloudiness with occasional rain showers. High 69F. Winds ESE at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 90%.

Can anyone update us on how bad things are in NY? It's going to be windy. Is that a good thing for Novak?

I would imagine the cooler and less humid it is, the better it is for Djokovic, for sure. Nadal on the other hand has been running in 40 + degrees weather on clay all his life in Spain..;)

I hope it's not too windy. I mean that would be a complete disaster for US open.

Btw. There are winters in Spain, it's not Africa.

Windy and damp conditions favor Nadal. Nole will find it now much harder to boss points, and he's going to have a harder time controlling the ball and not making errors with the heavy winds.

Temps for Mallorca
July

HIGH: 31c/88f
LOW: 18c/65f

August

HIGH: 31c/88f
LOW: 19c/66f

I mean it's simple understanding of geography and weather. Temperatures are colder and hotter in the interior of a continent. The sea acts as a moderator of temperature. Also latitude plays a big role in temperatures. Just put a thinking cap on before opining.

Why are we talking about weather in Mallorca when the match is in New York?

If the final gets rained out this afternoon, that would probably be beneficial to Novak since he could use an extra day to recover. But if it's windy with stop and start rain all afternoon, that could be pretty mentally draining. Advantage Nadal in that case.

It's not raining in NYC (my neighborhood, at least) right now, but it certainly looks like it could. However, the hour-by-hour forecast is decent -- 15%-25% chance of precipitation during the next few hours. I think the match will go on, although a delay or two could be possible.

I'm not actually that sure that wind would be great for Nadal, sure usually it favors the safer players but Nadal's timing on his shots needs to be perfect because of the rapid movement upwards, therefore more prone to be affected by random movements in the ball's trajectory.

For example when Nadal played Verdasco in the QFs he was abysmal in the first set and lost his serve quite tamely. Lost to Ljubo in IW when it was windy and declared the wind affected his game. Djokovic, OTOH, looked good in his wind match against Monfils IMO.

Rain only favours Djokovic if it introduces lots of delays and gives him more rest time.

It's not much help if they finish tonight, and play in the evening in 19/20c with lots of moisture in the air. That'd be pretty slow by USO standards.

From the site:

(as of Sunday, Sept. 12, at 3:30 p.m. ET)

Play is currently suspended.

Based on the latest official weather report from the US Open Meteorologist, we expect light rain to continue for a period, followed by the chance of a light shower this afternoon.

Based on the forecast and in an effort to complete all championship matches, the Women's Doubles Final will be completed on Louis Armstrong Stadium as soon as the court is dry, and the Men's Singles Final will be played on Arthur Ashe Stadium at 4:30 p.m.

For official updates, stay tuned to USOpen.org.

For what it's worth, I live in Brooklyn, about 8 miles or so south of the courts. There has been light rain for the last couple of hours, and the rain is still coming down (lightly) at the moment. The cloud cover isn't particularly heavy, but cars have their wipers on. It rained heavily enough a couple of hours ago that I had to rush back to my apartment while pushing my daughter's stroller at breakneck speed.

My best guess is that the match has a more than 50/50 chance to be completed today, but I'd expect there to be at least a couple of delays (in addition to the delay that already has been imposed).

Yeah, pathetic. Very fucking pathetic. Desperate, petty among other adjectives. Fair rest? Hahahaha, there is no fair in sports. You play with what the cards have dealt you, Nole played a 4 hour match with Roger, too bad for him. Rafa was more economical in his match, that's circumstances, but to cry and hope it rains and messes up the scheduling just so it's "fair". You may as well say what you really mean, you hope Nole gets an advantage so he wins.

Of course Djokovic's tiredness has nothing to do with Nadal. That's not the point. The point is that everybody who cares about tennis rather than just your precious Nadal wants to see a decent competitive match. It's not giving Djokovic an advantage if he has proper rest, it's merely removing a disadvantage.

You're missing the point. I don't care whose "fault" it is. I care about watching a competitive match. Nadal has in the past been beaten 0 & 1 when he's had to play 4 hours the previous day. You're missing the point. I don't care whose "fault" it is. I care about watching a competitive match. Nadal has in the past been beaten 0 & 1 when he's had to play 4 hours the previous day. Is he unfit? I'm sure he should have polished off Moya earlier, but that won't have meant anything to the poor fuckers who bought tickets for the final.

Sure.. that's an ideal desire.. but most of the people in this thread simply do not want Rafa to win.. It's not about a competitive match.. it's about a Nole win

For someone who loves to make tiredness excuses for Nadal, you are suprisingly stern when it comes to someone else getting an otherwise normal day of rest in a slam. Talk about hypocrisy :spit:

It's not hypocrisy, Nadal doesn't have a rest day either. And I've made "tiredness excuses" for Nadal? When exactly was that? Oh yeah, never.

I am not a Nadal hater, even though I may sound like it :) It's just he is No. 1. Has a lot going for him. These small advantages that he gets seem not fair. I know about his AO 2009 but he had one day rest. I said the same thing about Fed Murray match when Murray did not have enough rest. As I said, I really think he will win today. If Nole doesn't have the energy to make it a competitive match, that's too bad. I would like a competitive match, but to actually want it to rain so he somehow gets ahead compared to where he is now is ridiculous. Same with Rafa in Chennai, he played a long match the day before, it's too bad the final wasn't competitive, but that's tennis.

Hey, it's true. Nadal, when he's able to give 100% of himself, doesn't lose on clay. It's very simple logic.

There is no reason why Djokovic cannot give 100% of himself tonight. There are no knee injuries (ie. what Nadal was struggling with), weather is cool and cloudy, not the physicality as on clay, but you know what? I'll say it about Rafa in Madrid as well, is it unfortunate he was fatigued from the day before? Yeah, but guess what? That's tennis. So, you can't cry because "oh, I wish he has the same rest." The schedule is the schedule. Play to win or don't play.

no matter who wins tonight or tomorrow if the rain does not subside, nobody wants to see a 3,3,1 straight set wta-like beating.

I'm just being honest for God's sake. Most people who follow a sport have 2 sides, the objective analytical side that gives credit where it's due, and the emotional fan side that screams out, "Just double fault you bastard!" My fan side dislikes Nadal's game - I consider it a kind of anti-tennis - and his on-court antics, my objective side recognizes him as a great player. It just so happens that on this occasion the fan & the analyst in me both want the same thing - a rested Djoker in the final.

Tomorrow 1 PM is bulls***. Novak will run out of energy in the heat unless tomorrow is rainy too :) USTA is desperate to finish it tonight though. They suck. These people should not be allowed to even watch tennis

For me that is perfectly fine :yeah:

I simply don't like Nadal because i don't trust him. I see a different person oncourt and offcourt. The reason i dislike him is not really his defensive play or tactics. Actually i do admire that.

What i will never forgive him for the douchebag runs at the start of the game, the vamosing or his fans that don't follow him for tennis.

ya it's all bunch of BS.

The truth is i really want Nadal to lose, forever and ever. To leave tennis, to be busted doing what i think he does... I want him out of tennis and to retire for the good of mankind. I WANT NADAL OUT OF TENNIS because i dislike his behavior and the fanboyism of his infatuated fans that don't follow him for his tennis.

But would also be good to see Nole win another :wavey:

Good for you, congrats and thumbs up:) But in the unlikely occurance that Nadal goes on to dominate tennis, I'd hope for your sake that you stay away from ropes, poisons and sharp objects. Though if the presence of a player your hardly know and opinions of fanboytards on the internet actually rile you up in real life like your post suggests, then the world probably won't be missing much anyways.:wavey:

Off court he is this kind of quiet innocent person...but as soon as the match starts he is running to intimidate, fist pump, trying to distract with his bad manners and antics. I hate how he plays not to lose making his rivals make errors instead of him trying to make winners.

Like I said previously, none of what I said in my initial post was actually directed at you. Good for you that you dislike him, but still respect him, it's your prerogative to like and dislike whoever you want. Tennis can be played in different ways, one style isn't to your enjoyment which makes you root against the player, fine that's not my cuppa. But I'd think if tennis is really dying, there'd be a lot of reasons that would come before Nadal's "anit-tennis" style of play.

Of course. Surface homogenization and changes in racquet & string technology have made the game pretty much exclusively a slugfest from the baseline and that is the real problem. Nadal is to some extent a symptom of this, but credit to him for taking advantage. There are plenty of other baseliners who have failed to do nearly as well.

Off court he is this kind of quiet innocent person...but as soon as the match starts he is running to intimidate, fist pump, trying to distract with his bad manners and antics.

Hope you are capable of understanding that there are other ways to interpret the traits you mention, like Rafa acting for himself and not for intimidating nor distracting his rivals. The water bottles should have made clear for you by now that the guy is more than a bit obsessive. He follows his own routine, like his antics before serving (pushing back his locks behind both ears), the time he takes, the constant movement of his legs while seated, his race to the backline... they are all meant for building up and keeping his concentration. It's you who choose to interpret them as gamesmanship. And they do the job, Rafa's main weapon is his mental fortitude.

I hate how he plays not to lose making his rivals make errors instead of him trying to make winners.

Depending on how the match develops, that sometimes can be quite intelligent. Say you are leading 0-30 on a vital game. Many players will go for the winner, often miss it (they are nervous too) and raise the other guys morale; experienced players are likely to just make sure the ball goes in and the rival has to play it, it puts all the pressure on the other side of the net. Unless you happen to be having an excellent day, players who constantly go for winners hardly ever win big trophies. Intelligence does coun't you know.

Very dodgy person in my book.

Think what you will, just remember your book is not the book. Maybe if you met Rafa you'd see it otherwise.

(as of Sunday, Sept. 12, at 6:30 p.m. ET)

Due to the continued uncertainty of the weather forecast and to be fair to the players and not inconvenience our on-site fans any longer, we regrettably have to move the US Open Men's Singles Final and conclusion of the Women's Doubles Final to Monday, Sept. 13. The Men's Final will begin at 4 p.m. and be broadcast on CBS.
