Unreal match, could have been one of greatest of all-time, if they decide to play in that kind of quality in the second, third, and fourth set. What a dramatic second half of the final set! Nole played lights out tennis from when he was two match points down; there was nothing that Federer could have done about that. Novak becomes the only player to defeat Federer twice in a Grand Slam semi final.

Easily the best match and one that even exceeded its expectations. I feel like there were 2 winners on the court today. Hope Novak gives it his best shot against Rafa tomorrow but he'll be the heavy underdog.

Forehand was amazing all match long!! He really deserved to win:yeah:

Unfortunately for Fed...he played about AS WELL AS HE COULD, and it still was not enough...even I was suprised at how well he played during many stretches, but it's just the best, becuase he really had zero shot at the title playing Nadal the way he's playing, especilally after playing a match like that.

Well, the quality was up and down but excellent in patches with both players fighting very hard for supremacy. Federer didn't serve great, but displayed some scary play off the forehand and up at the net. Djokovic returned and played really well throghout. Gutsy play when he was down matchpoints. I liked that.

Overall a highly enjoyable match. Good luck recovering for tomorrow, Joker.

I actually didn't want Federer to win that badly because I knew from the way he played this match he'll be thrashed by Nadal big time. Garbage serve and over anxious on shots causing huge amounts of unforced errors. He says his aggression is back, but he still needs time to figure out how to find the right balance now that his footwork is slower and he no longer possess that natural flow he once had.

As for Djokovic, if he is not bothered by physical tiredness from this match, I'd tip him to win this match. His current form can match his first half of 2008 season when he clinched the Australian Open title. The guy is barely making any mistake on the groundstrokkes and hitting big changing directions at will. He is the only nightmare match up on tour for Nadal due to his ability to consistently change directions and find the right time to pull the trigger.

Better player won today, no question, but still Federer actually lost this mentally more than anything else. He pretty much got broken every time he seemed the advantage on his side, he relaxed as if he was playing against an ATP nobody and props to Djokovic to take advantage every time.
Also good to see that his pussy play on bps and mps was punished. He pretty much was just hoping that Djokovic would have missed a shot, rather than try to convert those chances. An habit since years now, but still fucking annoying to see and even as a fan I am glad it did not get rewarded.

Can't believe Fed went cross-court on 15-30 in the last game and played it right were Djoko was standing. If he had just played it calmly straight down the line it would at least have been a tiebreak. Very rare to see Fed make such an error in judgment although it's of course ridiculously easy to judge behind the comfort of a keyboard. Pity.

I don't really like Djoko (God, if he were to exist, really had no interest in the outcome of this match so please spare us the pathetic cross and look upwards at the sky) and his parents are embarrassing 'Tokkies' but credits to him for saving the MPs and finishing the match. That's well done.

Seriously, as a fan of tennis, I am glad Djokovic hit the ball and get the deserved win. Federer's defensive shit didn't deserve to win today. In truth, the match shouldn't have been this close, but Djokovic is not that confident yet... hopefully his first top 10 win this year should change that going forward.

Where did Federer's serve go? A couple of days ago he puts in one of the finest serving performances error, getting over 70% of first serves in at times during a hurricane. Then comes Saturday and he was only getting in about 30% of his first serves at some points. Back problem? Did Djokovic's returning spook him? Or just a bad day?

Djokovic came up with a good plan to go after Federer's backhand on the serve. It worked, as Federer didn't know how to handle it all match. When it came to those match points and break points in the fifth set, Federer opted for the safe but entirely ineffective slice return rather than trying to do something proactive. Djokovic, who handled those shots okay for the most part, punished Federer for it.

Djokovic moved very well this afternoon and got a load of free points from making Federer hit an extra shot. Perhaps this, like it possibly was with the serve, forced Federer to go for more than he wanted to, hence he sprayed the ball around a lot or dumped a fair number of balls into the net.

I agree, maybe it was good that Fed didn't win this, because everyone knows what would very well happen if he did play Rafa again. It might rain tomorrow so Djokovic can maybe catch some rest.

Awesome match and result :worship:. Never easy to watch my 2 faves play.

Novak is the better matchup for Nadal and if he has enough in the tank this won't be easy for Nadal.

Should Nadal win though I'd rather it be against Djokovic than Federer, the Fedhate would be even more staggering.

Hope the crowd will root for both tomorrow but I doubt it.

for a guy who starts breathing heavily when temp go just above 30?

he was breathing heavily from the start of the 5th set. At the end he looked like he was playing on final energy.

Btw congratulation to Djokovic fans, he is harder for Nadal, if he can recover he has chances to win in 3 sets. I say 3, because if it goes longer he wont have the stamina.

In truth, the match shouldn't have been this close, but Djokovic is not that confident yet...
Agree, in the third set Fed break came out of nowhere at 6-5*, since he was the one that struggled almost all games to keep his serve after that horrendous second set.

Hell yes!!! Djokovic showed incredible heart coming through those two match points and ending up winning the match. Incredible play in that final set. Djokovic's forehands were scary towards the end of that match. I'm giddy at that result! The Djokovic of 07/08 is BACK!!!

Don't sell Federer short, he played a great match with some great tennis. This match could ahve gone either way tbh. So glad Nole won though, we know that we're gonna get a US Champion who's never won before! Awesome.

I was amazed at how up-and-down Roger was in this match. He was hitting the ball so cleanly in sets 1 and 3, and then he was abysmal in sets 2 and 4. I think he kind of relaxed a little in this match, assuming he would pull it out, no matter what.

Djokovic has some serious balls to play the 4-5 game in the final set the way he did. It was pretty obvious in that set that anytime a rally was initiated, Novak had the upper hand, and Roger was too tentative to take the risk and approach the net, which worked so well in the sets he won.

Not a good sign for Novak to engage in elaborate theatrics and divine exhortations after the match. He looked dazed and confused. The final could be an even bigger test.

I am disappointed that Fed's serve went AWOL but I am quite annoyed that he did nothing to stop the rot from the 2nd set onwards. He could have tried reducing the speed, putting it into the middle of the service box, spinning it in but he did none of those hoping that it would turn around on its own.

What happened to Fed's aggressive 2nd serve return and the chip and charge strategy that he employed so successfully in Toronto and Cinci?

I had hoped that Fed would employ Paul to win or lose on his own terms but if he is tentative, Paul can't do anything.

In a way, I am glad Fed lost because he would have been schooled by a motivated Nadal.

On the other hand, I can only take my hat off for Novak. He played through a severe case of nerves throughout the match and for him to come out blazing on match points was a sight to behold. He has definitely improved his net game, he is a lot calmer on big points and executed the topspin ball to Fed's backhand to perfection. He kept his 1st serve intact even under severe pressure and even changed it up to a more conservative serve to get more 1st serves in the 5th set.

My only issue with Novak is that he looked winded in the 5th set and that will not cut it against Nadal. I doubt he will recover fast enough so he should pray for rain tomorrow.

What a great match the 5th set was epic, not a fan of either player but appreciate what they did out there.

Djokovic especially he was fantastic and played some amazing aggressive tennis when MP down, really desereved the win.

I do think Fed is past his best now, and he will find it very hard to win another slam so many players believe they can beat him now in a slam or otherwise.

Of course Federer is past his best, but he is quite capable of winning a slam. He did at the beginning of this year. Federer at his best is capable of playing and beating anyone. The problem is that he's older now and has days like today where his serve is poor and he's not really hitting his strokes that well. But hey, if you would be flattered for your folks to wear a t-shirt with your mug on it, why stop there, get one for yourself, too. Perhaps Nole should be wearing a similar shirt to his dad's. Perhaps he can run the idea past the people at Sergio Tacchini.

The terror of Federror.... I don't understand the 2nd set and 4th set. He is still easily lost focus when serving to open a set after winning previous set. His momentum dropped sharply there. This reminds me of Wimbledon 2007 Final.

He's actually the better player and more convincing than Djokovic. Too bad his current serve is not solid enough to escape pressure from very good returners. His 2nd serve return is another problem. However, if he's confident suddenly all his problems gone. LOL

Federer has always been prone to lapses in concentration. At the US Open, he's often given away a lot of second sets and picked up again in the third set. Even when he dismantled Hewitt in the 2004 final, Federer's second-set performance wasn't as sharp as in the first and third sets. So, I expected Federer to bottle the second set, find some of his form again and not meekly give away the fourth set. All very perplexing, especially from somebody of Federer's experience and who used to routinely step up to the plate at big moments.

The problem with this analysis is that "Federer at his best" is never quite defined. Do you mean, Federer playing the best he can these days, or the best he could play at one time? Is Federer playing at his best the way he can play against an inferior opponent or is it the way he plays against an elite opponent? Of course, Federer is capable of some great tennis, but the opponent makes a difference as well as having a "bad day."

As for playing much better against Nadal, I was loving the idea of Federer against Nadal in the final. Imo, Nole is a tougher opponent for Nadal.

I mean on a given day, Federer can still play really well - well enough to beat elite players like Nadal, Murray, and Djokovic on this surface.

I agree that Nole is a tougher matchup for Nadal. My statement was that I think Federer would have played better tomorrow than he did today. That's just my opinion, and it has nothing to do with the opponent or the surface or anything. I've just watched Federer for a long time and he usually bounces back to play better after such a match where he wasn't playing his best. It's a moot point, so I'm not discuss it further.

That sort of sucks!

I'd have to read the interview in context... because the media is so skilled at stirring shit to be commericial..

But.. the way the quote reads it's as if Rafa somehow let Roger down for not making it to the USO final! :rolls: Nevermind.. Rafito beat him at the French and at Wimby..

Dang.. Roger.. better to not say anything than to say bs.

I think he meant, he has been disappointed as well by the number of times he has made it to the final and rafa didnt and now it's rafa's turn to be disappointed that there is no fedal final at the us open.

Seriously roger gave Novak and Rafa their props. The interview is already online at usopen.org under interviews. He expressed that he hopes rafa wins but also said he wasnt watching the match and he also said good luck to novak as well. he talked about the schedule and said how novak would propably be too tired to win but he wished him luck. then he talked about how credit to novak that he played the right shots at the right time and that he WON the match, he said it could have been luck, it could have been novak playing the right shots at the right time or it could have been him selecting the wrong shot. said he did not give nole the match and that nole won it.

I think it was a fair assessment of the match.

Good riddance, Deaderer. Godspeed, Nole :)

Is there a stat (at least at Masters' and Slams) on how many players saved match point(s) against Deaderer and then proceeded to win the match?

He was asked if he felt like the prospect of a Fedal final was building up in the second week, as many have expected. Then that was part of his answer but yeah, way to stir shit up from journos and the ATP website.

I thought during the beginning of the interview, Fed was going to be smug and avoid giving credit to Djoko (like he so often does - he obviously has a grudge against him), but I really liked when Fed said: "Those who overlooked him (Djokovic) don't know anything about tennis." That was a nice thing to say.

Luck and Easy draws can't make you win 16 grand slams. I am obviously not a fan but I respect him. Cmon he is so talented and you know it.

What were the great players between 2003 & 2005?
Nadal was out of competition until mid-2004. He didn't win off-clay Slam/team events until Wimbledon & Olympics.
Federer had no top opponents in the Cincinnati draw,
stolen matches in Miami & Toronto, 2 Slam walkovers & Nalbandian retirement at Roland Garros. John McEnroe said he wished a walkover was counted as a victory for Federer.

I sort of expected Djokovic to win. I don't want to diminish his victory but I think Roger doesn't want to face Rafa in the final, that sits in the back of his head and he can't play at his 100%. Maybe that's also why he wanted to play semi first.

Congratulations, Nole! Very important win for him!

I couldn't see the end of the match and couldn't have predicted this outcome, but coming home to this feels so great. Now Novak has real chances of winning his second grand slam, this is the turning point in his career, more than it was AO08 actually. He has the game, he has the mentality and he has the guts... everything is lining up for Nole finally, god knows he deserves it more than anyone else. I'm so proud of the way he won today, he showed greatness, I think he's the worst possible matchup for Rafa and that he will win tomorrow.

Anyway Djokovic deserved this win, he absolutely got everything back and Federer was having to work very hard. The better player won. Congrats on reaching another US open final Nole, you deserve it.

Federer would have got blasted by Nadal anyway so I guess from a tennis view point Djokovic is a better choice for the final (the winner is never in doubt though).

Federer has wasted 19 match points in all in his career in losing matches:

Basel 2000 - Henman 6-2 6-7(4) 3-6 - 2 mp
Halle 2001 - Rafter 6-4 6-7(6) 6-7(4) - 1 mp
Australian Open 2002 - Haas 6-7(3) 6-4 6-3 4-6 6-8 - 1 mp
Miami 2003 - A.Costa 6-7(4) 6-4 6-7(7) - 3 mp
Australian Open 2005 - Safin 7-5 4-6 7-5 6-7(6) 7-9 - 1 mp
Monte Carlo 2005 - Gasquet 7-6(1) 2-6 6-7(8) - 3 mp
Rome 2006 - Nadal 7-6(0) 6-7(5) 4-6 6-2 6-7(5) - 2 mp
Indian Wells 2010 - Baghdatis 7-5 5-7 6-7(4) - 3 mp
Miami 2010 - Berdych 4-6 7-6(3) 6-7(6) - 1 mp
US Open 2010 - Djokovic 7-5 1-6 7-5 2-6 5-7 - 2 mp

Besides this Federer won 10 matches in which he wasted match points in lost sets.

Credit to Nole here.

Fell asleep watching the final (no, it was not because it was boring, I was tired and it was getting late). Anyways, Nole was ON FIRE! Very clutch yesterday. He hit on all the right angles, switched it up and just waiting for Fed to make mistakes, and boy did he ever. I've never seen him miss so many shots as yesterday. Net cord after net cord. Nole deserved to win this match. Fed was not his usual self yesterday with that second set where Nole just rolled over him.

The most painful thing is that Federer couldn't decide- tank or win this match?
That was really obvious watching him play.

He knew that Nadal is currently beyond his range. It's quite sad that he lost, but in my opinion Djoković has a big shot to win the whole thing.

Ajde!

I think Federer should retire before he gets another chance to embarrass himself further. He's had a good run, for sure, but it's time to dedicate himself fully to the kids and Mirka.
