Nadal will now have met 4 players in this tournament who played 5-setters directly before meeting him (Simon, Verdasco, Youzhny, Djokovic), with Lopez also playing a 5-setter before meeting him.

Nadal wins the final, and probably in straight sets.

I don't know that Djokovic will have enough energy to go 5 with Rafa. He played really great and he earned the victory over Fed, but as motivated and determined as Nadal is, I see him winning this title tomorrow night in 3 or 4 at the most.

But Nole must be exhausted, I think Rafa will win in 4 sets. I just think that Nole deserves a trophy too for his epic fightback win against Roger, so glad Nole finally beat Roger in NY, bad luck Roger.

If Djokovic is able to play like he did today, then yeah, he could win. But Nadal is so motivated and determined, and just about everything's been going his way... it's like destiny. His opponents are either inexperienced or exhausted from the 5-setters they just played right before meeting him. He's got the upper-hand, and he will fight like nobody's business. Even Djokovic will be doubting whether he can win against someone who wants this so badly and hasn't dropped a set yet.

The only players to take Nadal to a tie-break were the only two players he met that did not play 5-setters prior to meeting him.

After the Djoko/Fed semi, it's hard not to say that Djoko will be pretty tired and Nadal will win...BUT, I want Djoko to win, and I'll be pulling for him all the way. If he hits his shots like he did in that final set, he's in with a good chance. I think Djokovic would have had more of a chance in the final than Fed, so it's probably the best outcome for those who don't want Nadal to win!

I'm going to go with my heart and say...Djokovic in 5. All I got to say is, GO, GO, GO NOLE!!

Simon: 5 setter previous match.
Verdasco: 5 setter previous match, and choked ridiculously anyway.
Youzhny: 5 setter previous match, then 4 sets, then 5 sets.
Djokovic: 5 setter previous match.

Stars are aligned for Nadal - given a bye to the final against tired opponents, and now faces an opponent who only finished a 5-setter 18 hours earlier.

Djokovic's chances are in a blowout win, big aggressive hitting, dominating the points, short rallies, straight sets.

Hah, you are saying this like Nadal is the only player in GS history who was to play opponents who were coming from 5sets battle in their previous matches.
As for the final I don't think fatigue will be an issue for Nole. The weather forecast is for rain so there might be breaks in the match that will help him recover if he gets tired or the match could be played on Monday that will be even better for him. I wouldn't say Nole has no chance, no, I even think he has a better chance of beating Rafa tomorrow than Fed had. Still I hope in the end Rafa will prevail.

09-11-2010, 11:28 PM
I tipped Djokovic in 4, simply because he is the one and only remaining night mare match up for Nadal on the hard courts. Him and Murray can match Nadal toe-2-toe when it comes to baseline play on HC thanks to their backhands, but I'd put Djokovic way on top of Murray when it comes to the match up.

For Nadal, Djokovic is somewhat a harder version of David Nalbandian. Not only can his backhand consistently withstand those cyclones of death (as Clay Death wud say), but also his ability to change direction and pull trigger firing huge cannons with forehands at the right time troubles Nadal very very badly. Another important thing to mention is he has the ability to turn back from defense into offense against Nadal, and that's very hard to do because the ball is always high up and close to the lines. Everytime he plays Nadal on hard courts (ever since 2008) I must admit I'm rather impressed. He plays very intelligently, has Nadal right where he wants and picks the right shot at the right time.

Exhaustion might play a part tomorrow for him, but if he can pull off his A game like he did today, he's got a good chance especially when his current form now can match his first half of 2008 season. However with that said, Nadal game has changed and improved quite a bit since last year so it'll be quite an interesting match. If his improved game can avenge a hard court match against Djokovic especially in a Grand Slam final, then he's truly going on an unstoppable steam roll because he knows he has defeated all possible bad match ups.

Nadal sure can. The way he's improving... Well if Nole keeps this attitude, I see no reasons for him not to be able to repeat a final here either. On topic, no matter how Nole wants it, there's just so much his body can take. Besides Rafa is just as fresh as it gets, having lost no sets thus far. It would be quite a miracle if Novak snatches the win in my opinion, but yeah, weirder things have happened.

Q. I was wondering, with having to come back tomorrow, how important was it to get it over in three sets?

RAFAEL NADAL: Sure, always is important if it's three. If you have a match like I had in the semifinals of Australia a few years ago in 2009, I lost; I gonna lose for sure, no? But having three sets match and two hours, or a little bit more, of the match always is great, no? I gonna be in perfect conditions tomorrow, so that's very positive. We will see what happen.

I wasn't convinced with Djokovic's serving today. To beat Nadal you need to get free points off your serve. You can't just get the ball in and rally, because Nadal will out-rally you. Nadal in straight sets if Djokovic plays the same as he played vs Federer.

Djokovic would beat 2009 Nadal, but not 2010 Nadal (and Djokovic didn't beat 2008 Nadal at the Olympics fast hardcourt).

Mjau!

Djokovic is clearly the superior player on this surface and has all the tools to dismantle Nadal. If Nole is fresh, Rafito takes a beating. Unfortunately, he wont be.

Nole has a pretty dominant hardcourt record vs Nadal, and not just those 3 wins vs the worn down Nadal last year - throughout the career it's a 7-3/7-2 record?

But i don't think they've ever play best of 5 sets on hard and, depending on what Novak has left in the tank, rafa just doesn't look losing 3 of 5 sets anytime soon.

I'd be confident to say Rafa only needs to win one of the first two sets to win... by the middle of a fourth Rafa will start to run right over him.

But geez novak can hit flat and deep, Rafa will have to earn this.

I am shocked that so many of you think Rafa winning is a no brainer.

The bookies also are overwlemingly in Rafa's favor ( 1.30 for Rafa vs 3.50 for Novak now) Meaning you can more than triple your money if you bet on Novak and he wins. This match is on hard courts not clay/grass. Novak has a much better record on this surface. So he could be a bit tired but he is 23 and will recover quickly and be ready.

I am hoping for a Rafa win but such overwhelming opinions by fans, experts and bookies on Rafa now is just very troubling. I didnt expect fed to lose today.

Nadal is juts going to be a brick wall today. He will play tennis like never seen before. Nadal can call Djokovic or anyone the favorite but Rafa is going to lay it all out on the court today. Djokovic was able to dominate the rallies against Federer. He was enjoying the pace of Roger and then hitting his shots brilliantly. Nadal will be ripping heavy angles, corner to corner, and Djokovic's fitness will be severely tested.

Djokovic will have to fight to the very end because Nadal won't be in charity mode like Federer was at many times. Nadal is pretty sure to win the final imo, it is just a matter of in how many sets.

Djokovic in 5. Nadal doesn't stand a chance against a Nole on fire.

It's a bad match up for him too. Djoker is dominant in their H2H on HC. And yes, I know Nadal has improved his serve and stuff. I just don't see that being enough to beat Djokovic if he plays like he did yesterday.

Only chance for Nadal to win is if Djokovic is tired and doesn't have as much left in the tank.

Actually, I changed my mind.. I think Nole will win in 4, not 5. I just don't see Nadal winning against an on-fire Nole. Sure, Nadal has improved, but I have my doubts that it's enough..

The only way Nadal will be able to win is if Nadal dominates the shots, being agressive, and takes the first set. Wouldn't be too bad if Nole was tired after the 5 setter yesterday either.

Cannot believe how people are overwhelming picking Nadal. Then again, the rest of the world had Federer penciled into the final, too. Oh well.

those who are dismissing djokovic completely for this final keeping in view the lengthy semis he played know nothing about how much a hard earned slam final like this can motivate a player like him.......

the final is not going to be one sided.......reasons,

1. djokovic is pumped up for this.......true that he spent an hour or so more than what he would have liked in the semis but the motivation of playing in a slam final will make him come up with whatever he has.......

2. this is djokovic's best surface and nadal's worst surface......

3. the match will be played in the evening in cooler conditions......

I think its deceiving when you watch Djokovic vs Federer, because a lot of the clean winners Djokovic hit would be retrieved by Nadal. They were in 2008 when Nadal was in great form and beat Djokovic in Olympic Semi, and he's in greater form now than back then and is fresher now than he was in the Olympics. No signs pointing to Djokovic winning.

I really like Djokovic but i find his cheering camp off-putting! Often times they are the only reason i want someone to beat him! They best tone it down. Their exuberance makes it seem as though they are thoroughly shocked when he wins. Which they shouldnt be. He has the credentials to take out anyone on any given day. They go beyond support and look like people who have way too much invested. As if their very life is at stake!

I don't care who wins. For Nole it would be great to capture a 2nd slam by sticking it to Fed and Nadal and prove that he can be a contender for years to come and Nadal for completing the Golden Career Slam at the age of 24 which would seriously question Roger's position as GOAT with a losing H2H and Rafa could potentially reach 16 slams and beyond if he can stay healthy. Unless Delpo comes back to dominate and Soderling/Berdych/Murray can up their game next year.

The fact that Federer didn't win makes me happy.

I'm going to say Rafa in 4 only because Nole may not be able to rise to the occasion after just making it to the final.

As far as whom I'm going to root for.. that's gonna be a tough one. I'd really like Rafa to make it a trifecta because it's not been done in 40-something years?

At the same time, Nole hasn't won the U.S. Open before either. I would say Nole is going to have other chances, but one never knows. So I'd have a hard time rooting against Nole.

I'm just so happy it's a Nole v Rafa final.

I think under optimal conditions Djokovic would win this in straights. However, Djokovic seems to have a mental block against Nadal in the biggest of matches, and he is coming off a draining match against Federer in the SF, while Nadal has not been pushed all tournament and will be well rested. With all that in mind, I'm going with Nadal in 4. This is going to be his best chance to win. I'm not sure he will ever have another US Open where he will avoid all the players that have the game to beat him on this surface until the final.

Well, here it is.
The final, and after 2 weeks I have come up with the conclusion that this has been the easiest slam for Nadal ever.

Hopefully Djokovic saves tennis by beating him, but if not, then it's a truly sad day for tennis.
When Nadal wins the US Open, on the 12th September 2010, will be forever remembered as the day where tennis died.
Hopefully that won't be the case, and Djokovic will get his 2nd slam.

"The only noteworthy equipment for Olympic tennis will be the courts. The ITF and the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) have chosen DecoTurf II as the surface for the seventeen match and practice courts, all of which will have night lighting. DecoTurf is a multi-layered, cushioned hard-court surface also used for the 2004 games and at other major events like the US Open.

All matches will use Wilson's US Open ball."

I think Nole has a better chance then people think. He's going to have to play aggressively due to potential fatigue from last night. And that is definitely the way he needs to play anyway to win. So, he could come out guns a blazin, and really take it to Rafa. With that said, Nole's serve isn't that forceful anymore, he really has to spot it well, otherwise he won't be able to dominate enough rallies.

I'll say Rafa in straights.

I am so happy Nole won yesterday that I cannot even describe with words!!!???? I am happy not only because of his game! What facinates me the most was his focus and willingness to stay with Fed until the end. Something he's failed at in the past and simply folded against Fed and other players when he sensed loosing the finish line!!!!!! Kudos to Nole!!!!!!! He did not get disappointed when facing match point he scrammbled and found solutions!!!!! Great effort!!!

here you go dude

What can I say about Fed? He is still the best ever so no need to be hard on him!!!!! He has a lot of good tennis left in him and he will prove that soon no worries!!!!

Nadal on the other hand is waiting for his chance to break through tomorrow. With and exausted Nole in the Final his chance is more realistic than we think. Not that I don't trust Nole!!!!! I believe Nole really wants the title, but wanting and being able to, are two different things. He will really, really surprise me if he takes it tomorrow, considering how fragile he has been in the past when none of us believed that he is able to beat Fed and Nole back to back in a slam....

All jokes aside, this reminds me of the following: Nole-Rafa Madrid (Nole battling with Rafa for hours and Fed taking the title......)!!!!! I hope the same formula does not apply to Nole tomorrow!!!!!!! He's worked hard and should continue to sail to the finish line no matter what!!!!!!!

Recharge your batteries Nole and may confidence take you to your destination. Cheers for great tennis.

Startling fact about Djokovic- Rafa rivalry is that djokovic has never won the third, fourth or fifth set against Nadal whether its a best of three set match or 5 set match. All the 7 matches that he has won were best of three sets and in those too he won in straight sets. So until he proves otherwise I can’t see him winning three sets against Nadal.
