Does a certain Commentator make you root against someone?

Brad Gilbert does it for me. That's why I always pull for Nadal or Murray's opponents. Pat Mac's undying support for that punk Roddick makes seeing him losing more special. How about you? Who pisses you off the most

Brad Gilbert makes me want to root against Nadal (he's usually playing guys I like so I do anyway) but both he and JMac's Rafa boners are just :o

Overt support for every clown american does make me dislike them, but the fickle worship of Fedal is the worst. When Roger was #1 he was the GOAT and they loved him, but now Nadal is better than Fed at serving, volleying, defending, and mentally according to Gilbert and McEnroe. Fed at least has backed up the praise, but Nadal hasn't even won and he's already the GOAT at 24.

Turns out all you need to be a commentator is a god grasp on how to be a MTF gloryhunter :o

Metreveli, commentator on Russian TV, loves Federer so passionately, I always cheer for his opponents, just to hear Metreveli's small voice when Roger loses or avoid hearing his singing voice and hearty laugh when Roger is winning.

Russian commentator on Eurosport, Kolevod, made me hating Henin and Schnider so much, I always rooted for their opponents.

They make me sympathize with the other player, especially during the Fedal matches against other players. They are always ignoring any good play from the other player.

Others' preferences should not impact one's own so strongly but ironically among the responses are some by people who surely have a similar impact on others with their often hilariously biased and acrimonious commentary on certain players.

Our commentators - Tim Ryan and Luke Jensen - talk non-stop, but often ignore what is happening on court. Thus, Tim constantly calls the score incorrectly. Thankfully, neither waxes lyrical about any player in particular.. Fred Stolle -doesnt do this either but he wheezes a lot ( I wish he would sit further away from the microphone) and likes to tell us how much a player has earned.

Any Australian commentator during any Henin match. They are so high up her ass it's unbelievable :o

I like her game and all (for a female player), but come on, she has no serve :o

This. So much (and I'm a Fedal fan). The constant underappreciation and lack of level-headedness in regards to balanced commenting when either of those two are in action baffles me. Any and all of their opponents' winners will be treated either as a fluke shot or disregarded completely, and any and all of Federer's ("the Magician of Precision", nickname courtesy of one Norwegian commentator, undoubtedly something he read somewhere) or Nadal's ("the Matador of Spin", nickname courtesy of same commentator) shots are hyped accordingly and praised into high heaven. Some commentators are making it seem like most of Federer/Nadal's opponents should be jizzing their pants at the very idea of even sharing the same court as them, and bend over as a gesture of respect and reverence.

I hate when they say, "Well, he's only 6 feet tall". Come on! Fed is skinny as shit an not that tall.

frew mcmillan

best commentator ive ever heard. understands tennis, doesn't go insanely overboard, excelent observations. always notes technique and well timed shots. just a joy to listen to

almost feels old skool, but good old skool

the new mcenroe types are just loud. i can imagine andy roddick commentating in 10 years... the volume will be on mute

Jason Goodall, at times, really goes out of his way to kiss Roger's ass. It can get very annoying. Robbie, is much better.

This is true too, I noticed it especially with Roger and Rafa's latest matches. Very good shots from Robin and Fernando were politely acknowledged, but a good shot from Roger or Rafa got "AND THAT IS WHY HE IS THE BEST IN THE GAME RIGHT NOW!!!!!"

They rarely ever give credit to the other player for hanging in and playing well.

Commentators do not influence who I cheer for. Many times they confirm the fact that I think they're idiots.. Other than that, they have no influence on what I think..

I'm happy enough tha we're taking about non-american commentators, too. I was about to call a bunch of posters here hypocrites until I realized that some people had brains and realized that biased commentating is a worldwide thing, not just an american thing.

The mere fact that a good lot of you root for the other guy simply because the commentators praise the other guy, isn't saying much for your integrity at all. Nor does it do any justice or give praise to the other player.

"I wasn't really going to root for you, but since the commentators are so heavily against you and for the other guy, I decided to root for you."

Yeah... that'll make the other player feel a WHOLE LOT better.

There will ALWAYS BE biased commentating. It's been here since forever, and is all over the world. You'd be surprised how much Japanese commentators love praising Nishikori when he's up against a top ten player, but that's because it's country loyalty. If THAT'S hard to understand, then it was useless to post here.

John McEnroe and Brad Gilbert make me hate Nadal even more.
I love it when he loses and they're commentating.

I wouldn't say biased commenting could make me actively root against someone I normally like, but it will occasionally annoy me to the point where I'll go online and search for commentator-less streams. A thing that annoys me even more, though, is when a commentator constantly makes factual errors because he/she hasn't done their homework properly. Like the commentator during the Youzhny/Wawrinka match yesterday who kept referring to Stanislas Wawrinka as a "doubles specialist". WTF?
