USO R4: Nadal def. Lopez 6-3 6-4 6-4

Good effort from Lopez but Nadal was too solid for him. Nadal was better against Istomin and Simon but this is a good performance though.

Good chance to him against Verdasco in quarters!

i think the late start had both of them off their game. but nadal impressive that he hasnt lost his serve so far.

Solid and couldn't really be in doubt given that Lopez has little security in his shots.

Pretty good from Rafa. Didn't serve as well as against Simon and reverted to dropping his shots too short on this surface but more than good enough for a player like Feli. Youzhny in the semis could be the first big test.

Very little doubt Rafa will win this tournament, and complete the Slam!!

A little bit weak and passive in the third set, otherwise very good from Rafa. Good serve, almost double as many winners as UE's.. He got it done in 3. All in all a good match from Rafa today (or should I say tonight? :p)

Exactly. If that's not solid, I don't know what is :)

Sure, he played better in the earlier rounds, but.. At least he got it done in three here, and the stats are good.

Lopez was too inconsistent. Funny thing was his horrendous dropshot attempt in the 2nd.

Nadal has to improve his play in the next rounds. 1st serve% was a little low for him.

Nadal is looking very good and this is the toughest he has ever been at US open. His serve is extremely good and gets him out of trouble, which wasn't the case previously. Anyone who wants to beat him has to work even harder than in the past on hard courts.

His ROS is his only main weakness in his game. Other than that, his game looks very solid for winning the US open this year.

Another nightmare. Hard to watch another uninteresting beatdown. Lopez, Verdasco, and Ferrer must get together and talk s&#@ on Rafa behind his back. They've got to be tired of his dominance.

Totally predictable and boring, but a good performance for Rafa once again. Lopez was flustered from the first ball, thank god he didn't keep up the form he had for the opening of the first set :tape:

Comfortable win. Verdasco could be troublesome if he's not gassed.

Also, 135mph serve.

Nadal is getting worse as the tournament is going. Luckily for him Lopez and Verdasco have a 0% chance of ever beating Nadal in a slam, but Nadal will have to get very lucky with who he plays in the final to even have a shot.

The most awesome thing is that Lopez actually didn't play that badly, especially in the 3rd. Nadal was just too good, with that serve and those returns (again, not as good in the 3rd). He is a serious contender for the title now IMO. And he has improved on most issues people seemed to list for him not winning a GS. His serve now is just.. wow. People should be scared.

I just hope for another epic match against Verdasco although it will get though for Verdasco, he can't have much gas in the tank left after that 5 setter. What annoys me the most is that he could have ended it in 4, had he only won the 2nd set TB. ARGH :(

Nadal can afford to get much much worse before Federer even gets a set from him. Nobody is close to Nadal's level right now.

The last words Nadal said were picked up by the umpire's mic and he said "Very well played". Not sure what Lopez said but it was probably something like "You are going to win the US Open" because it looked like Nadal shook his head in disagreement.

didnt see the match but heard here Rafas ROS return of serves were bad.
Hmm he use to be quite good returner but his weakness is he stands to way back....
Lopez has the banana serve which means rafa couldnt reach the serves....

Verdasco has a banana serve too.....sqary for rafa.....

Well 135 mph by rafa in his serve
wow
he changed his grip GOODY!!

Will it be at fed-nadal final?

Söderling has a small small chance against the Genie Federer

but what is the odds? small

He can't have returned THAT badly if he broke a good server such as Lopez in every set.

If I were Nadal I might prefer a proper test before the final.

This, plus he plays serve and volley, which Nadal hates playing against. I honestly expected it to be a tougher match.

09-08-2010, 01:22 PM
Solid stats from Rafa though he didn't look as confident out there as against Simon. His groundstrokes weren't as deep and when he tries to be aggressive he is still, at times, lacking consistancy. He is also lacking that killer instinct, he could have broken way more than three times, he let too many opportunities slip away. Still room for improvement. Feli had a nightmare start winning like one point in the first dozen and shanking every other ball into the crowd, thought we might have seen a real beating at first, fortunately he got better but was still making too many errors.

Sillyrabbit
09-08-2010, 01:43 PM
Still needs to find consistency on those serves which he's clearly trying to put more speed on, served really well in the first set and was hammering them down, faded slightly after that.

Sophocles

Er, really? Nadal has the best passing shots in the history of the game.

nadal_slam_king
09-08-2010, 01:52 PM
Rafa doesn't need to improve anything to beat the rest of the field, he played a very high standard of 30 winners, 14 unforced errors, 9 aces, 63% 1st serves in, won 90% of 1st serves, won 62% of 2nd serves, and in very swirly wind conditions. That form will beat Djokovic, Soderling, Federer, no problem. He isn't supposed to play aggressive all the time, that would be too one-dimensional, he's a thinker and he varies his play appropriately.

Topspindoctor
09-08-2010, 02:10 PM
I still can't believe people say he isn't looking convincing  The guy hasn't been broken once yet...If that's not convincing then everyone else is playing WTA quality matches - He isn't going to go all out in earlier rounds when it's easier to just break once and hold serve. He was doing it since RG this year (remember two TBs against Almugro :o) and he is doing it now (saving energy for big match). I know the fans want Rafa to rout everyone like in RG2008, but I don't think it's going to happen ever again because he doesn't NEED to break his opponent 6 times in one match. It's exact type of high energy game he has been moving away from and people still want him to win 2/2/2 every match in order to look good

  You just don't get it, do you? Nadal can't play tennis. He only brutalizes the ball. He hasn't played one good player or if he has they simply choke against him. He can't return serve. He can't volley. His serve is probably juiced up by some unknown technology because how is it gonna change in only a week?

Maybe because you underrated Nadal's serve all along?

Nadal's top serve before this was not 115 mph. He could bang a few in the 120s. It's more accurate to say that he added about 10 mph to his serve.

I saw Lopez's effort as only all for show. The whole affair was scripted. No, a "triple 61" could have given themselves away.

But we aint seen nothing yet - there is another scripted match scheduled tomorrow between Nadal and Verdasco. Until when will Verdasco and company ever stop being "used" by Rafa/Tio Toni? The draw started this all.
