Great fight and heart from Verdasco. I hope he gives it an honest effort against Nadull in the next round rather than lays down.

Pics, you should've won this one, up a break in the 5th and 4-1 with a double break in the tiebreak and you don't win another point.

The match wasn't great in terms of the errors but it really got much better at the end of the match, with Fernando going for his shots. David did lose his nerve a bit there at the end, but he was also very tired and the power of Nando got to him. Verdasco deserves the credit here for grinding out the win while not playing his best tennis.

Typical. Making sure they tire themselves out for Nadal. It wasn't enough that they're both Spanish, they had to make certain that the winner is exhausted for the next round. You couldn't have scripted it any better.

Gutted for David, but he basically ran out of gas. Can't believe the way it fell apart for him in the fifth. Verdasco took one step towards shaking off the mug label. Now let's see what he can do against Nadal. He's certainly playing well enough to give Rafa a fight.

Well, I was thinking back in 2007, where he wore down Rafa twice, at the US Open and then in Shanghai, and how he just hung in there and grinded and was a wall mentally and physically. Today, he was definitely the less fresh of the two, which was really surprising for me, Fernando was the one with the more energy at the end. I think really, this match was more about the mental and emotional fatigue, and Fernando being a bit more calm helped him tremendously.

Good for Verdasco. But he was down 2 sets to 0. Nadal isn't going to let him come back. And he's a lot tougher than David Ferrer, so... Maybe not Verdasco's year, but I still think he can pull out a career match, if he really wants to.

It was decent quality, but I thought that especially the third and fourth sets were a little disappointing. The fourth set seemed to be going so quick except for the long games at the end

Amazing comeback from Nando. As a fan of the guy i'm delighted, even though the first two sets (the only i managed to see.. ) were the story of his career - two stupid mistakes in a row to give up the first set (in one point), then **7-6 in the second set TB and losing it

All the mugs calling him a choker should STFU forever now, coz neither Nadull, nor Fed would be expected to come back from this deficit, given away in this specific manner.

I mean, anyone would be totally down mentaly in such circumstances and grinding it out is a major achievement, especially against a perpetuum mobile who doesn't give you anything for free.

Now i dare to expect another win for Nando in his journey and perhaps first GS tittle (i'm no more shy saying that loud).

The guy has been awesome and plays pretty much the same level as in his semi against Rafa in AO, which he was very close taking away, while Rafa hasn't improved much since then imo.
He serves better, but his baseline game is still short enough to get pownded by a real hard court machine.

USO is faster than AO and now should be Fernando's best chance taking Rafa down.

BTW, the ones who got impressed by Rafa 3-0ing out of form mugs like Lalo or GS mug Istomin should reconsider a bit and take the pink glasses off (especially with Istomin dragging Rafa to use his super retrieving powers so early already..).

Verdasco has been extremely close to Rafa lately (even in this almost double baggel final on clay, the game was just as close as if it was 7-6 7-6. And BTW, Soder had an almost double baggel to Rafa the previous year and took him down at RG, so now history is about to repeat..), so now in this form, he should be good enough to take the clay mastah down.

Tennis has to win! Vamos

I agree about this. Being his fan can get so frustrating! Earlier in his career he was suffering from mental breakdowns. Then he was suffering from not being able to convert BP's and not playing good on the big points, especially TB's, which most of them he lost.

I've seen him done this before. Almost having the match in his sleeve, then do two stupid mistakes and lose it instead. Thank god he came out of it winning the match this time, though he should have taken the 2nd set. Because then he would have won in 4 and I would have been right. lol

I was at the match and from my perspective it wasn't that Ferru ran out of energy, rather he ran out of nerve in that tiebreak. Both guys could have played another set if they had to - they're both equally fit. Fernando seemed to feed more off the crowd's energy than David who was having a running dialogue with his team seated not far from me. He was going berserk, throwing his racket, screaming at his box - he simply lost it at the end.

One of the most thrilling matches I've seen in awhile. Both guys played their hearts out. The biggest winner here is Spanish tennis.

All I wanted to tell Ferrer during that final set was "SLOW DOWN"

Bastard was playing in hyperdrive

Ferrer is hyper on court at all times. I don't know when he sucks in the oxygen but he's constantly moving even when seated. How he can keep this up for five sets is beyond me. It's a credit to his fitness but I can't believe it wouldn't help him emotionally and mentally to slow down and take stock of the bigger picture in a match.

The player with weapons won.

Ultimately yes. It took Verdasco the two sets to find his range but when he did, he was overpowering. David imploded from the frustration of having to scramble unsuccessfully to track down Fer's monster forehands.

Nando should have won that 2nd set tie-breaker put played extremely passive on his second SP while serving so all this Ferrer choked crap is a little silly.

Great fight and great effort by both. When Fernando lost that epic 2nd set tie-breaker I thought he was down for the count but then he simply started to go for his shots and evened things up. Fatigue definitely played a major role in that final set and unfortunately Ferrer couldn't keep up with Verdasco. Errors were there a plenty but both guys hit almost as many winners and the intensity, drama, and the roller-coaster of emotions just added t this match and it was great to see. Obviously ESPN are fucking assholes and were showing Venus/Schiavone and Clijsters/Stosur instead of this epic match where the players were dealing with the wind much better than their female counterparts on centre court.:o

Good luck to Dasco, hopefully we have another AO marathon match where the other Spaniard will win, this time.;)

There was this hilarious Verdasco supporter in the stands who started yelling "come on Fernando, he's off the ball!" afterwards.

Great atmosphere, and what a way to finish the match.

LOL. Picturing it now.. Too funny! :haha:

How does anyone choke to Tobasco? What the hell?

What about setting a different spin on this match? What about saying for once that Verdasco didn't choke or tank and that he instead outplayed (ok, maybe a it of a stretch, but) Ferrer and deserved to win? Truth be told, he won the sets he won over Ferrer with a bigger margin than the other way around. He was solid in the third and fourth set, he was unlucky in the TB in the second to not win it, because he could have and should have finished it in 4. Verdasco was the better player in this match imo, well, after the first set anyway. He deserved to win.

Exactly! This is what I've been saying since Verdasco won. Ferrer was lucky to win that second set. Verdsaco was the best one and should have won the TB and finished it in 4 instead of 5. Could've saved him some energy for the match against Nadal.

Ferrer really should've won the second set 7-5, I think he had a couple set points then (could be wrong) or at least deuce. And the tiebreaker was great quality, Ferrer hit some absolutely fantastic shots to win the set, there was no luck involved.
