nice gamesmanship in the 5th set by the swiss player, but querrey gifted him the match.

Sam definitely needs to work on his volleys. Hopefully it is the next thing on his list. If he was able to even put away half of the crappy volleys he hit, he would have won the match no doubt. If he can improve his volleys though Querrey will be a tough out in the future.

Sam's lack of variety was really exposed in the 5th. Wind was kicking so much neither player could get aces or baseline winners, so Stan started chipping and charging which is not an option for Querrey. Good to see some variety winning over ballbasher Querrey, and it shows the faults in the American school of tennis.

Lol at Tangy the Roddick, Djokovic and Nadal fan complaining about gamesmanship.

Moments of brilliant play and tactics compared with choking and horrible play from Wawa. Sam choked also at times.

The end of the fourth was hilarious with Wawa serving, he was choking so bad he could barely move his feet, let alone his arm. He was hitting his forehand with zero power and following through over his head, Nadal style

Tennis wins today. That this mug Querrey is the future of American tennis shows the depths to which the US has sunk in tennis.

Querrey much like Fish will never be crowd favorites at the US Open because they are total mugs, boring and hideous to boot. Why would the fans want to cheer on those mugs? Each match they win guarantees a worse match in the next round.

Very disappointed I missed this match, I was really looking forward to it. So glad to see Stan in a QF :woohoo: I didn't think his first slam QF would come somewhere off the clay, but I'm really glad he's put it together somewhat this tournament.

Sam's got work to do, like people have said his volleys are mediocre, and he does have giant mental lapses at times. That's almost where his laid-back personality hurts him. I'm sure he'll get to this stage again, but Stan really deserved to make it through.

Every American in that crowd should be ashamed of themselves. Sat on their hands all day. Someone should have told them this was the last American left.

Again, to be American is to be self-loathing to a large extent (from having been to five continents I would actually put the Brits 2nd on this list). There are even posters on here who have apologized (yes, apologized) for the crowd not at least cheering equally when there is an American playing a non-American at the USO. These very same posters expect and even appreciate 99% of the French crowd cheering for a host-country player at the FO, and likewise with the Oz Open and Wimbledon. Many American tennis fans actually root against a player just because he or she is also American.

Great week for Stan, and he should have a hell of a match with Youzhny...

I really enjoyed this match for the drama and the fighting. Sam, I like him a lot and rooted for him to win this match and really take advantage of the situation in front of him. Truth is, he was outplayed most of the match, and only when Stan was off was he the better player. I like Sam a lot, but the truth is, he's an extremely limited player. His second serve is either basically a first serve or it's weak and attackable. Return isn't good enough, backhand isn't good enough, slice isn't great, volleying skills are almost non-existent. Very serve-reliant, like Roddick, and he doesn't play to his strengths enough with the forehand. He gets to content in long rallies, and he can't play like that with his height and power. Hopefully he continues to improve his game so he can reach the upper levels of the game.

Stan, what can you say. Breakthrough event for him. Great job fighting through, hanging in, and really playing to the situation well at the end of the 5th. Very happy for him, but you have to wonder when his body will have had enough.

BG may have said that too, but I heard John McEnroe proclaim that Querrey, Fish, and Isner would be in the year-end top 10.

The American commentators are so desperate for the Americans to do well, they'll try to spin any minor American success into something bigger than it is. The fact is, there has only been one American to get to a QF of a slam this year (Roddick in Australia). That's pretty bad.

Anyway, I'm super happy for Stan. He's been an underachiever, but hopefully this tournament will boost him to bigger and better things.

I watched up until early in the fifth set but had to leave it there - looong match. I'm a big fan of Sam, I just like him, what can I say - but his tennis is odd at times. He doesn't have enough mental toughness for a long match like that and makes weird shot selections at times. But I still can't help liking him and I really hope he continues to improve his game and his head.

Well done to Stan, it looked unlikely that he would come through it at so many points. So many mistakes but when he got it right it was a joy to watch. Sadly I think the two long matches will be his undoing against Youzhny but you never know.
