The third quarter is by far the most difficult quarter. The second quarter is extremely weak. Igor got a pretty tough R1 opponent in Baker, Okun can be tricky, and Bohli is a good player, so it's a comfortable draw but could have been easier.

Marsel should make the SF. But he's coming off playing on clay, playing a long match today, and has shown no form on hard courts at all of late, so I don't know about his chances to actually win this title. I don't see that happening.

Mertens v Niland will be an interesting R1 match. The winner should have a decent chance at a SF. I don't trust Somdev against anyone and since he's playing Davis Cup this week, he could be tired. He has a nice draw but, we'll see what happens.

Hopefully Igor or Somdev will win the title, good luck to both!

to be fair to marsel though he hasnt been showing any form at all on any surface until this week so..

i dont know if marsel can win this title, it would be nice to see him win it though since it is in turkey so you know how much it would mean to him to do well here, especially win.

He has a very friendly draw though and as you said should make the semis atleast..if he has a hard time in the beginning im sure he can use the crowd support and the fact that he is at home to help him out.

You are right about his form on all surfaces, but it's hard to adjust to hard after playing on clay. Also it's easier to find your game on clay than hard because you have to hit more balls. It would mean so much for Marsel to win this for a couple of reasons, he would be top 100 for the first time, but obviously most importantly it's in the home country who has supported and loved him. With his confidence from the event this week, I expect him to really bring his A game to Izmir. His draw is about as easy as it gets for this level of challenger event for three rounds, so he can play his way into the event, and hopefully he can rest his body with some short matches if he does feel any fatigue, although the energy from the crowd will definitely help in that regard.

If he can make it into the SF without much wear and tear then he's a definite major threat for the title. I guess we'll know more as the next week goes on. I'll still be surprised if he wins, though, because I think Kunitsyn and Bohli are both horrible match-ups for him, and I don't think he can play in God mode like he was in today forever before he crashes.

Yeah, pressure is on him, also playing in Turkey will add more pressure. That could end up being a factor. I'm guessing he knew his situation and that he absolutely needed to win over RRH and that's why he fought even harder than usual to win.

His points from last year's Izmir CH already dropped a while back (tourney was earlier last year). He's defending 3 points this week from Turkey F9 quarterfinal. Then 32 points from Bangkok dropping Oct 4th.

A quarterfinal here would probably carry him just inside the top100 (99th or 100th) for the first time. That'd be short lived though when the Bangkok points drop out the following week.

oh they did? then thats good because anything he does here he will only gain points:)

i expect him to make it past the quarters..semi's atleast which would give him 35 points, his total would be 555 which would put him # 98 and at that point if the 32 points drop off he actually could still be in the top 100.

but why are all 32 points coming off is he not going to try to defend bangkok?

oh they did? then thats good because anything he does here he will only gain points:)

i expect him to make it past the quarters..semi's atleast which would give him 35 points, his total would be 555 which would put him # 98 and at that point if the 32 points drop off he actually could still be in the top 100.

but why are all 32 points coming off is he not going to try to defend bangkok?

I don't know what his plans are after this week. I was just pointing out that the points will be coming off. And the week after Bangkok he'll be losing 20 points from Tokyo. So either he should make the final here or score some points the following weeks to stay in top100.

Kunitsyn also won his night match which started well over 8 pm.

Vasiliev lost to Sadik KADIR in 3. Neither player played very good but Vasiliev was a bit short on luck. He kept laughing nervously. Kadir complained a few times about the line calls. The australian might be of Turkish or Arab origin, I will have to look that up.

Somdev looking good with the Lacoste gear, I'm glad he signed with them. I wonder if he met A-Rod at any of the Lacoste tennis events/parties.

Klizan won 64 64 - looking good

Bautista wasted set and 4-1 lead in a match where Bautista got point penalty due time wasting. Muller got annoyed with Bautista's "Vamos" throughout the match and give few scream of Vamos back when he won the point.

No surprise that there were no handshake at all at the end of the match.

Ilhan and Dev Varman were very comfortable

Bachinger looked sharp

Mertens looked good today, liked Sousa's attitude though, fighting for everything.Too bad he was the one who had to face some poor line calling at the key points which really annoyed him at the end which resulted with shout of "I lost today just because of you" to the umpire and complaints to the supervisor.

I am not sure about it, just yet. #105 Andujar made SF at ATP250. He will jump in to Top 100. Ilhan will pass up two, resulting in #101 at this moment. If he plays Kunitsyn at SF, the winner will be higher in rankings.

Marsel has not clinched a top 100 position this week. Also, he's going to fall out next week anyway if he doesn't continue to win here. He has 55 points to defend the next two weeks after this, meaning that this week is essentially a buffer for the dropped points, but he won't likely add any.

Go Somdev!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If Somdev or Bohli win this event they'll be right on top of Marsel in the rankings, actually Somdev will be top 100 again. So this is an extremely crucial event for these players' careers.

Igor would have been top 100 had he made the final. He better fucking do damage next week in Thailand!

Mertens lost from 4-2 up final set

Muller doesnt look like his 2008 form at all, slow around the court and when he gets into baseline rallies his chances of winning gets lower.Relying heavily to his serve and it is also not as good as it used to be.

Mertens is actually quite impressive for me,from the first point he tried to attack Dev Varman at every opportunity, after a lot of mistakes he finally managed that but played a poor game and lost his serve to 0 at 4-3 final set and that was it

Bachinger was very solid, geting a lot of balls back, returned very well,he was better player from baseline anyway

Heard that Klizan was sick before the match and clearly he was, never really in the match, swinging from the hip at some points, using ice at every change over and retires as soon as losing the SP

Bohli was very solid at the 2nd set - didnt see the 1st - now I see it might be tank by Kunitsyn. It sounds likely to me,he wasnt trying his hardest and didnt look disappointed at the end of the match at all.

Thank you for the report and photos!

Sad to hear about Muller, I guess he's still not fully match fit from being off the tour so long. Scary as a fan to hear his serve has declined; without that, he's toast.

You must have caught Mertens in one of his good days. Was Somdev just pushing and waiting for errors?

And yes, Igor was going to play Bangkok qualifying tomorrow, but now he's in the MD of Malaysia. Probably a tank. Bohli, though, is the type of players to force errors out of Igor.

And yes, Igor was going to play Bangkok qualifying tomorrow, but now he's in the MD of Malaysia. Probably a tank. Bohli, though, is the type of players to force errors out of Igor.

Who do you think will win the title after all of the players you have seen this week?
Yeah Somdev was rallying and making defense but it was pretty good enough for 1 set since Mertens was looking to attack everything and was missing majority of them.

Well,I guess this wasnt Dev Varman's best performance but Mertens looked good in all of his 3 matches here.

Who is going to win,it is tough.Ilhan is probably the best pick but he hardly played anybody to test or force him,I guess if he can beat Bohli tomorrow he has a really good chance of winning.

Strangely didnt see enough of Bohli's matches so I cant say much

At the other semi it depends on Bachinger,he looked good here,it is pretty much depends on him,if he manages to attack and play his game consistently he has a big chance but still I am going with Dev Varman.

I am not so good with predictions but my pick for final is Ilhan against Dev Varman :scared:

Not quite yet, but looking very likely.

But the qualifying draw has already come out......which means he has not made IN

I think that Devvarman enter on main draw of ATP 250 Bangkok!

marsel is the huge favourite for the title.
I am not sure.

He is indeed a favourite but lack of competitive opponents in his 3 matches might be a problem and it is difficult to judge his form from those matches.

he is clearly better player than bohli, devvarman and bachinger and he is in crazy form. marsel will take the title, there is no doubt.

marsel is too good for these clowns. he shouldn't play against these mugs. anyway, he took good points here. after that event, marsel will play only at atp tour events.

I like Ilhan a whole lot for his fight and determination, but let's be serious for a minute. He's at most a Dudi Sela level player. At most. Let's not pretend Marsel is somehow proven on a large scale, or super talented. He just came off a horrible run of form, and was down 7-5 5-1, magically came back with some choking help, beat a opponent who tanked, and played 3 absolutely easy matches here. Let's call it for what it is. Marsel is probably the favorite for the title, but his overall level isn't any better than Bohli or Somdev, and both players definitely can have chances of winning.

Also, I'll say it again, he's defending 55 points the next two weeks. This week is only a buffer for those points. If he does not win this event, he'll continue to be in the 100-110 range, and not solidly top 100.
