~Summer Hardcourt Season 2010~

The Hooded Claw

Just noticed that no-one has started a thread for this part of the season ;)

Here are the results from Paulo's section of the Rogers Cup qualifying.

[4] Nieminen – Zemlja 6-3 6-3
[13] Mathieu - (WC)White 6-2 6-2

[5] Chiudinelli – Salamanca 6-4 1-6 4-6
[8] Marchenko – Pospisil 6-3 6-4

[6] Serra – Bester 3-6 6-7(3-7)
[9] Russell - (WC)Diez 2-6 6-3 6-1

[7] Clement – Yani 6-7(5-7) 2-6
[12] Fognini - (WC)Chvojka 6-2 6-4

Expected result from Paulo over the wildcard, but Nieminen next is a tough ask. Tough draws are to be expected in Masters qualifying, though!

Good luck in the next match PHM :hatoff:

And thanks to Quiterie for posting here in the other thread.

He was 5-2 up in the last set, tennis can be so cruel. And you can't buy confidence.

He's 8th on the Cincy alternate list, the way things' been going (ie. 10 MD w/d in Toronto), he may still get in without having to go thru quali. We'll see. Not to wish withdrawals or anything, but hope he gets in anyway.

This is rather likely, there might be even more withdrawals after Toronto. But this was a cruel loss today and I wondr if he even wants to play Cincy.

Well, I hope he does go if he gets in MD. Sports is cruel, that's always the case, I understand the frustration. Just hope he will shake off the disappointment and keep going, if he decides to not go, then I hope he rests well and get himself ready for USO.

It's hard for him and for us too.... Loosing after leading the match.. I don't understand really but it's the game.
We have to be strong to help him.. He has to make some decisions and we have to be there to support him.
I'm really sad for him, he deserves this victory, if he decides to stop his season, he will be harder to come back in January, I'm sure he can come back earlier. I know he will ba affected by this loss but he needs to get more confident to play better and better.... Why not the way of the challengers? I don't know now.. Paulo has to decide..

he was one point from winning at 5-2 (40-30). His main problem is mental, not physical. He was clearly playing well enough to win today, until, ahem choking at the end. Why would he want to end his season when it is obvious he has the physical ability to play at a high level?

I saw him at the U.S. Open qualies yesterday. He was sitting next to Arnaud Clement, watching Mahut play a match on court 11. When I saw him, I was glad because I was worried he may pull out of the U.S. Open based on what people have been saying about him wanting to end his season early. I think he can give Hewitt a great match if he's motivated. Hewitt is not what he once was and PHM has the power to make Hewitt move alot.

Yep, he totally outplayed Hewitt in the final set. His backhand made a lot of winners, which was awesome to watch. Even though he could finish this match much much earlier (had very good chance in both 3rd and 4th sets), the one he beated in 5 sets today is the former US Open winner, former NO.1, and a well-known fighter. The victory definitely will bring back a lot of confidence to him.

... is pretty much how I felt when I turned this off at two sets all last night. It was 2.30am, I had work and thought I could see what was coming. I was shocked when I saw the fifth set score today.

Paulo's nerves were palpable in the third and fourth sets, especially when he tamely surrendered that service game to Hewitt to give away the fourth :help:

Thankfully he wore Hewitt down and came through it and hopefully this is the catalyst for better results and renewed confidence.

Paulo didn't play bad in that match, but not much suprise either. He had the chance in both the 1st set and 3rd set. The match would be more stimulating if he could break one Fed's game. Anyway, the savage wind is the true winner of all the matches yesterday. From his words after the match, he was really disturbed by the wind, and Fed obviously coped with the wind better than him.

Did anyone have the same feeling as me that his net approaching is better? He looked more firm at the net, and the approaching timing improves. From the stats, actually his net points won percentage is almost the same as Fed's (both 53%, 8 of 15 vs 9 of 17) :p

He doesn't have the best technique, but it's getting better, I agree! :) Maybe it's because he's been trying to come in more in the past year or two.

He surely will go to play Metz. But Beijing is two weeks after that, which should be ok for the time. Last year, he played both. Thanks. The problem is, he can't play the qualification coz he has the exhibition arranged at the same time. How did Boutter want him to say the same thing as Arnaud did last year?

And I also read the interview posted in Angélique's blog, which is a good one but sounds sad. It makes me feel like they had pre-communication several weeks ago, and the organizer let him think he would surely get a WC, so that's why he didn't register Bucarest (his ranking is enough to get into the main draw of Bucarest) and arranged to play that exhibition. But finally at the last minute, they told him the WC would be given to others, and now he has to be put in a difficult position. No wonder he feels betrayed and hurt.

I am sad for him. This WC probably is the right thing he needs at the moment for the points and ranking. I really hope he will play the good tennis in the next tournaments to prove himself to those people.

You are right, they said to Paulo that he would have this WC, it was certain to him so he didn't ask for a wc in Bucarest or to play the qualis... This week he will be off which wasn't what he wanted !
He needs some support and Santoro and Boutter didn't brought him that!

Concerning the intervew I posted, I think Paulo is remotivated because he said that he was thinking to an eventually final in Davis cup and will do everything to take a part of it.
He has no coach right now but he deserves a good one who can make him progress and being confident.
His tennis was good and I hope he will play better and better until the end of the season!

I still keep the little hope that he can get into the main draw of Metz if more players will withdraw. Will you still go to Metz even if Paulo finally cannot play there?

He certainly never forgets DC, doesn't he? :awww: It will be a difficult task depending on too many things. However, the more difficult it is, the more motivated when you finally achieve it. It's good to see he determines to fight for sth.

So according to his words, he will go to play Beijing, Shanghai, the russian tournaments and finally Bercy. I will surely miss his quali matches this time, but if he can get into later rounds, I may catch it after I fly back from Japan. Otherwise, I will wait to see him in Shanghai if his ranking is ok to play the qualies here. ALLEZ Paulo!

I don't think I will go there, maybe on sunday to see Nicolas Mahut but really after that, I don't want to go to such tournament where they give the top 15 the privilege of a WC...

Paulo won't have a WC for Metz, they didn't gave him one...
I'm so sad, and he won't do anything this week because he can't do the qualis because he is in at an exhibition next to Paris... Really angry against Santoro and Boutter !

Fabrice?Oh I don't know but what has he do anything with this?

I was quite angry at the director and even Cilic,Paulo (or Mahut) should have got the WC,instead him. It's weird the director of this tourney doesn't "support" local player enough. Now he is in the MD.I hope he will play well here and Cilic will be eliminated soon.

Do we not need an indoor season thread now? Does anyone want to open it?

Fabrice?Oh I don't know but what has he do anything with this?

Well, Santoro is the new President of the tournament Metz, and Boutter is the director, so both of them can be involved in the decisions on the wild cards.

:p According to Paulo's interview, after Metz, he will go to Beijing and Shanghai to play the qualis (he is already in the quali entry list of Beijing), and those are outdoor hardcourts.

You can see the last 2nd paragraph of this article in the following link. The whole article is about Tsonga, but there is one sentence "Les organisateurs de l'Open de Moselle, Julien Boutter (directeur) et Fabrice Santoro (président), qui ont donné une conférence....."
So apparently he is one of the organisers :p

http://www.lefigaro.fr/tennis/2010/09/10/02004-20100910ARTSPO00383-tsonga-attendu-a-metz.php

or you can just simply read the official website of Metz. There is one article talking about Fabrice how he feels about the tournament as part of the direction.. blah blah blah.

http://www.opendemoselle.com/content/direction-du-tournoi-fabrice-santoro-je-suis-ravi

And yes, I agree with the draw. It can't be much better even if he is put in the other quarters.
