I open the 2010 US hardcourt subject

It looks like Arno won't enter LA directly no withdrawal until now and still 4 spots from the MD. If he hasn't change his road plan to play again on german clay  he will have to play the qualies there. It's only 250 qualies but the level could be quite high for this kind of tournament with players like Tursunov, Gilles Muller, Kzvin Anderson :help: well it does't sound very easy for a come back after a break of one month  On the official facebook we learn that he entered the doubles with Erlich :)http://www.facebook.com/FarmersClassic#!/notes/farmers-classic/doubles-field-overview-2010-farmers-classic-presented-by-mercedes-benz/120756347970672 We'll have to wait the draw to see what he has decided.

Then it will be Washington where he's first alternate, the qualies of the two Masters 1000 and New Haven and of course NY. Big programme, let's see what will happen now

Finally he missed the MD for one spot, not lucky this time Arno and as expected the qualy draw is really good for a 250 http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2010/423/qs.pdf . He draws Smyczek who beats him last year at the US Open and who improved since so already tough for a first match and then in second round it should be Nishikori  and then Bogdanovic so he has some chances to stay out of the MD  Well, maybe only a week of train in LA  and playing the doubles could help him to prepare for Washington where he made the MD.

Yesterday he was training on the Grandstand with strange socks  pic by the farmers twitter

63/26/46 I listened a bit the live coverage on radiotennis at the beginning of the match then stop because tennis on radio that's not great

As the qualifying matches are played on the sycamore courts at UCLA who looks more like pratice courts and as people walk around the venue and on a small hill next the courts Arno was really annoyed and argued a lot about that situation  . I also heard a french man who was cheering for Arno, i don't know if it was a coach or a friend or a fan as i had only the sound :p

Well, it was surely tough for him to stay concentrated on that venue and he had big problems with his serve with low pourcentage , DF and many BP to defend which seems quite normal for his first matches after a long break but it was really poor . He needs to find some rythm and a decent serve and playing some doubles matches could help to be ready for Washinghton. There is a lot of works to do on his game even if the fighting seems there as he played long time under the sun and had some long games which lasted more than 10 minutes.

We'll hope that losing again against a low ranked guy and in a first qualifying round :drink: will not depressed him and that he will feel better during next matches as it's a long season until US Open and that he needs confidence.

Some comments on some twitter and some pics of Arno and the venue.

Clement is not built for quallies anymore. His diva attitude is in full force & he self-destructed in the 2nd set.

0-40 and decided then to argue with ump. Forehand long & Clement out in 3. Can't say I'm surprised.

Thanks :)

I know that anything can bother him on the court but i don't understand why people are so harsh with him "He acts like a diva...blablabla". I think a tennis court should be quiet and not always with people talking, walking around, eating or whatever ! I can understand him for that - it's normal to be annoyed by the noise when you need to concentrate.

I hope it will be better in doubles - he has a very good partner and they should be seeded

I agree with you about the shirt (beurk lol). I can't say which is the worst between this one and the red shirt of the beginning of the year

Well, I'm Ok when i saw the venue that Arno is no more built for this kind of qualies matches. When it's play on the same site than the tournament it's OK but here that's maybe too much for him. It doesn't look very exciting en cage avec les grillages  and for the noise there was surely not a lot of people but they were walking and arno was saying seat down  The LA qualies are not for him  , it's a pratice place. And he was surely more nervous because of his level.

For the doubles he will need of a serve  but it can be a good pratice if he can play some matches. I will try to find the Lacoste outfit for US Harcourt because this during one month :help:

Yeah for some of his reactions I agree but not when he's complaining about people making noise on the stands (when they really make noise of course Lol). When you are watching a tennis match you should respect the players (silence between points ect..) - the lack of education is also for these people.

Smyczek beats easily Nishikori yesterday. Arno had a pratice session with Baghdatis yerterday and they play doubles today as last match in night session on center court.

As we sayed Arno can be a diva on courts  I found this on a forum http://www.talkabouttennis.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17596 , it's from a volunteer in LA. He can be a nice guy even after a loss

Got back to the hotel, picked up Clement and coach. Spoke to them at length and asked if he would do me a favor. Told him Scotty is a big fan and would he leave him a voice-mail. Clement said sure, called Scotty, got his voice mail and Clement left a very nice message for him thanking him for being a big fan. I'm sure Scotty will never delete that message.

And then saturday

A few minutes later, Clement and coach walk past me. As soon as Clement sees me, he starts sort of singing, "Scotty, Scotty, how is Scotty"? Even though he had just lost a match 6-4 in the third, you couldn't tell by the levity of the moment. In fact, it was the coach who gave me a thumbs-down signal letting me know Clement had lost.

I read that he was 3-0 up in the first set so it means that then he lost 12 games to win 1 :help: It was a tough opponent but i didn't expect a big loss like that. His stats on serve are amazing 38% of first serve with 23% during second set  Is his elbow painful or does he serve more crappy each day  I don't know if he will stay in the US all the month  cos it must be long for him. I love Court 2 as it only has about four rows of bleachers and no fence between the crowd and the court, so I was happy to see that Arnaud would play on that court. I went over there after watching Julien lose. In walked Tipsarevic all dressed in black, with a tennis bag on wheels! I guessed that most people were there to see him and not Arnaud. My first impression of Arnaud was that he was really the most tanned I'd ever seen him. The first set started out fine, with Janko yelling several times throughout about his own play or about his disappointment over a line call. Arnaud had a similar outburst. I didn't think that the level of play was so great, but there were several nice winners by both players. (I'm sorry I can't confirm that he was up 3-0 in the first set, as the scoreboard wasn't working at the beginning and I was answering emails on my phone :p and finding out that Gasquet had retired...).

Arnaud totally took his sweet time at the change-over by s-l-o-w-l-y changing his socks, shirt and bandana. The last point of the first game in the second set is what I assume made him lose his focus. He complained about the call and stared at the umpire for a long, long time. I knew right then that it was the beginning of the end. He totally let it get under his skin and that was that! As the match went on there were a few good winners, but I found my mind wandering as it wasn't very interesting. I can't believe I'm saying that, but the rest of the match was really rather boring, so I plotted the remaining matches I would see that evening, namely--Llodra and Simon.

Arnaud was sshhh-ing the people in the stands and honestly, I can't really blame him. Some people have no clue (or am I a tennis snob?). Roddick played last night and he brings out the "lightweight" tennis fans who really have no idea about tennis-watching etiquette. However, I have seen Arnaud complain about a plane flying over so he really seems to lose his focus sometimes!

He left in a rush and maybe that's the last time I'll see him?

It was off to Micka whose service motion was so much like mine ::haha:!! He's apparently injured. Simon was a real treat to watch so the night was not all bad for me!

One more thing I forgot: his treatment of the ball kids was not too bad, but there was one time (when I was paying attention) that he wouldn't give the kid the towel back until he put the balls on his racquet. Seems pointless.

Witch Bracelet i'm lost  I don't think the bracelet for his elbow is for esthetic and he never complain about his pain or long time after so we never know but the balance bracelet looks very strange
Athletes swear it makes them stronger, leaner and faster. But is this wristband mostly hype?

Many pro surfers, basketball stars and celebs like Robert De Niro never part with their Power Balance wristbands.

Power Balance claims that holograms in the bands release an electromagnetic buzz that will make you instantly stronger, more flexible and have better balance.

You can’t exactly feel it, but the hologram’s energy boosts your body’s ability to absorb oxygen, the company says. The result? Activities that require balance and strength–like surfing, biking, and pilates–become easy.

And yes, Carine is a bit older than Gilles but not that much. She must be around the 28 i think  I remember tennis players saying that tennis is a job for single man and no kids man as they are always out of their home and that's true that compare to others sport tennis players are not early father except some guys like Seb or Llodra but having kids in your 20 when you know that you will be out of your house during the next 10 years must be tough.

TDF: Congratulations on your win today [6-4 6-0 over Arnaud Clement]. You had a slow start, going down 0-3 and losing 12 of the first 14 points--what helped you to come back from that so well?

Janko Tipsarevic: You know what? I was just taking it point-by-point. Arnaud is very difficult to play sometimes 'cause he's so quick around the court, and he made a very good start. After that, I broke, and he started serving dramatically worse. There were a couple of close games, like deuce, advantage, deuce advantage, where I managed to win. And then when I made a double break in the second set, I just felt like he gave up.

Toomorrow Toronto qualies, the field is good so it won't be easy for his current level and mindset

Didn't know he has a younger brother, did the youngster look as cute as him?

Arnaud has lost his match against Yani 7/6 ; 6/2

I followed the first set. He was a break down but came back. He had set point to finally loose the set on a double fault in the tie-break :o. After he probably gave up as usual this year after a long first set loss...
His serve was better yesterday whereas his opponent was serving awful at the beggining but it didn't really help Arno.

It's a pity we never have his opinion about all these losses, if he had an explanation

Thanks for your report Lesliem i would say i'm not surprised  and losing again a tie-break :help: How many he lost this year it's incredible  He’s must be really down at this moment and it’s hard to believe that’s in those moments he’s not thinking about retirement  Now he regularly lost against guys over the top 200 like Torebko, Ebden, Smycek, Yani and for sure he’s affected by that.No idea if his tendinitis is a problem as he’s quite secret about that but he’s not competitiv actually and it’s surely more tough when you are in USA for 6 weeks as this must be long . Maybe he should go back in France and come back only for the USO  because the cincy qualies are always tough than in Toronto and honestly i don't think he's able to beat somebody those days.

L'open de la baie de somme is one of the biggest tournament of the circuit national des grands tournois français. It's the week-end before Metz.

Back to Cincy, he won   64/63. Tough start with an early break down then more easy with just a little problem at 3-3 in the second set where he saved BP. Next round seems quite difficult with Falla who is in a great shape and the forecast looks bad for tomorrow with a lot of rain.

No rain and a loss 46/57

It was a tough draw indeed. I was also following Adrian in Istanbul :) but to sum up with the stats it looks that it was a bit better despite many opportunities missed :o
He missed a couple of break back opportunites at the end of first set after a slow start. He served for the second set at 5-3 but Falla broke back  and the colombian closed the match winning the last 4 games even if Arno had 2 BP in the last one. His confidence is still not great but the level of his game is maybe better  The problems is that he doesn't win and now he has to wait again a long week before New Haven what's a pity he can play the doubles to keep him busy  . Tough summer for him but his form is maybe on his way back let's see if he's not too much affected by this new loss.

Finally after one day of rain delay he played and as we are used to write he lost . Today it seems that again he had a slow start on serve but it has been really better on second set. He must feel bad considering he had choosen to play a long US Harcourt season of 6 weeks to win only one match  enough to feel depressed  and what to say about that tie-breaks which reflect his poor confidence and fragility.

Arno was broken by love at 5-5 in first set but saved some set points to break back but then to complete the set you had the famous tie-break  and it's the stats of the year for him. If i'm right with my check he won only 3 and lost 14 with this one today :ignore:. The number of 1 hour set that he lost in a poor tie-break this year  in a way losing 2-6 would be less hurting. For his level of play i don't know what to say there were no streaming he's maybe not too far but atm he surely needs some luck  as even his attitude was quite good today as he fought during all the match during both sets :boxing: but the goal in tennis is to win  converting most of your opportunities actually he missed crucial BP in the second set while this should have been for him. And he doesn't play doubles again. He no more wants or what

This can be a too much one loss and even a good draw in USO would change nothing. I'm sure he's thinking about coming back in his home sweet home  Poor boy we are waiting better days  and hope that it will happens

Today an article about Flushing in lequipe as frenchies doesn't have a lot of success in the tournament past years and the analysis of Arnaud

It's tough to translate but he said that in NY everybody is ready and there is rarely a dolt in final like in him in AO (smiling). As usual he's tough with him and it shows how he must feel atm.

Clement takes down Baghdatis in five sets
By Erin Gell
Tuesday, August 31, 2010
Veteran Arnaud Clement came back to defeat No. 16 seed Marcos Baghdatis 6-3, 2-6, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the scorching 93-degree heat of Louis Armstrong Stadium on Tuesday.

Baghdatis, who missed the 2008 and 2009 tournaments due to injuries and low rankings, seemed poised for his best chance at US Open glory following laudable performances at US Open series events in Washington and Cincinnati. However, the ponytailed Cypriot couldn't match Clement's confidence early, conceding the first set 3-6. Baghdatis soon found his stride, dominating the second set with eight aces, before hammering out a quick 6-1 third.

Clement, however, armed with his signature sunglasses and bandana (a different color for each set, of course), rallied back, capitalizing on a service break in the fourth set before pressing to a 6-5 lead in the fifth. A double match point chance was thwarted, but Clement was finally able to convert on his third opportunity and book his place in the second round.

The 32-year-old, who failed to qualify for last year's Open, now holds an 11-16 career five-set record. He will face the winner of today's contest between Robbie Ginepri vs. Eduardo Schwank, both of whom are unseeded.
Match Facts

- Clement and Baghdatis have now played each other six times, with the Cypriot owning a 4-2 edge.

- Baghdatis has yet to make it past the second round at any US Open.

- Clement, at age 32, is playing in his 12th US Open.

- In total Baghdatis served up 22 aces to Clement’s six.

I watch from the middle of first set, pity for the injury of Schwank but it was a great point actually. Schwank continued 3 games after his injury but it was strange. Not the best way to win for Arno but he was a set and just broke back so we can say that it's not stolen.

Why did not you beginn by annoncing Arnaud WON the mach (cos of his opponent's injury) ? lol

Well, he could have won the match so it's not an hold up.

i just see on Infosport the post match reaction of Arno that he gave on court to Canal Plus. he said that of course it's not the same to win like that but about the 1 set 1/2 he played it was not perfect but he managed to give intensity on points.

Baghdatis - Clement
This was a good match! The crowd was pretty small, but they were very vocal and basically even as for as support for each player. Arnaud looked very funny as he has white sunscreen on his nose, which you can see between points when he takes of his sunglasses. I was wondering if Arnaud was near retirement, at least from singles, since he is getting old, but he is definitely not finished. He has a very good serve and very good volleys. Arnaud did have an elbow band though, so hopefully he's not hurt there. His only issue was he let some balls go by and they went in, but when he hit the volleys, they were very good, and he came in often. Marcos got called for a foot fault at the end of the fourth set and he got very mad at the line judge. During the fifth set, he would be called on three more foot-faults, although he didn't get mad on these, but this is something he needs to work on as it kept happening! With Arnaud serving for the fourth set at 5-3, he let two passing shots go and they both went in, and this is what cost him the break of serve. However, with Baghdatis serving down 4-5, Arnaud played a great game, there were some awesome points, and he got the break back right away to take the fourth. Llodra was in Arnaud's box and he was really excited after the fourth set. At the beginning of the fourth set, Marcos seemed to be in charge, but from 3-1 down, Arnaud played incredibly, I'm not sure he even lost a point until 4-3 for him, he hit gutsy shots and there were some great rallies, but he won all of them. Marcos was definitely not at his best, but he hit some great passing shots. The games in the fifth set were all pretty one-sided, but almost every point saw a great rally, as both players were going all-out and fighting hard, and hitting gutsy shots, especially Arnaud though - he played really well. Marcos looked exhausted at the end, the heat and the foot-faults really hurt him, but Clement played fantastic and fought so well from 1-3 down. The match ended on a bad challenge from Marcos on the third match point and the players embraced at the net.

r32 = 90 ranking points, makes it easier for the rest of the year when he will have to defend a lot of points to stay inside top 100.

Yeah, but on the other hand Arnaud said he was the underdog in the first round too and he went on court without expectations. That also turned out pretty good for him ;) The retirement gave him more rest than Mardy, so I think it depends on their games. Arnaud has to find out what's difficult for Fish. My sister is a fan, but I have absolutely no idea about the way he plays. We rarely see Mardy play in our country or on tv.

No Arthur Ashe and no night session , it's Djokovic/Blake who take it. Pity in a way but the Amstrong is also a big court. Anyway it will be tough Mardy serves better than his previous opponents so Arno will need a perfect match to have hopes i must say that a 3 round is already good but let's see what will happen.

it was totally winnable but it hasn't been . Lot of wind at the beginning, by moments Arno played really great he made a numbers of backhand winners today  nice variety in the shots selections. He can have some regrets on the second set where he missed many opportunities and of course in the fifth where he was broken twice. That was close really pity :o. From what i saw today the level of his game can still be good, play an american on Amstrong surely help for today. I don't know what will be his main feeling after that match  He missed his chance that's obvious but he played a good tennis match.

Unfortunatly I could not watch the match, I just followed online, pfff so much stress...
In general messages, they say like you soulage, arnaud played great, especially at 4th set.
That's a pity, for once, I thought he was going to win (yes, I was optimistic! lol) in the beginning of the 5th set.
Can't wait for his itw, I'm curious to know if Arnaud will be satisfied about his game, so quite happy, of frustrated by the defeat, so angry...LOL

off topic: I don't hope so (!!!) but if Bennet can't play in 2 weeks (it seems his injury is not too serious, good !), I wonder if Forget will call Arnaud for double.

He has at 98% his place in the AO MD now as he won 544 points since the start of the year and this week the 100th in the ranking has 530 points. But true he has 262 points to defend until the end of the year

I always dislike Mardy so i'm not happy about the result and that game he missed at 2-3 in the fifth  for me he was the better player on court except in the third.

US OPEN - 3e tour

Mardy Fish (EU,19) bat Arnaud Clement (FRA) 4-6 6-3 6-4 1-6 6-3
Prochain adversaire : Djokovic.

Arnaud Clément a bien vieilli !

To sum up this. He's not too much disappointed he prefers lost like this than like in the past weeks. He takes pleasure when he plays at this level. Indeed he plays for this playing good on big court that's why he loves tennis and will continue next year. he's happy about the level of his game and knows that he was playing like that all the season there would have more good results. He regrets than there is not mant tournaments as fast as USO as it's better for his game.
About DC he repeats that he will never annonce his retirement from international team like do some football players. He knows that there is better player than him in single and in double that's why he's not selected.

it's good news to know 1) he intends to play next year 2) he should have the points to enter AO directly, cos he should be defending his auckland points the week before  :armed:

arno fans present in melbourne really should celebrate the 10 years with him, it's not usual that someone still comes back after 10 years.

as for the fast surfaces... hewitt (with a sort of similar style) plays better on fast too. maybe it's something to do with how they tend to get all the balls back, and the fast surface helps to give their own shots more pace.

There is a good article about the smart game proposed by Arno against Fish here ;)http://straightsets.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/09/05/for-older-players-30-is-more-than-a-score/

For Older Players, 30 Is More Than a Score

And what about Arnaud Clement and Patty Schnyder yesterday? Mardy Fish got all the glory for outlasting Clement in five sets on Armstrong. The home crowd chanted “Go Fish” and treated Clement like an intruder. But the small Frenchman played the far more fascinating game. The 32-year-old Clement, who has modeled himself on Andre Agassi, is a classic counter-puncher. And in recent years, he has had to adjust to the trials of aging by developing a more cunning style, full of spin and flair. He now molds shots, going inside out to set up a slicing, down-the-line backhand. Intent on saving energy and neutralizing more powerful opponents, he takes balls off the short hop, cutting down on the distance he needs to run, controlling the pace. Unlike Fish, he doesn’t have a killer serve. His serve spins in, deceptively. He’s got guile and touch on his side, producing more complex tactics than most younger men attempt these days.
