Really good draw for Carsten Ball to go far. He should at least make semifinals here but a finals appearance wouldn't be suprising at all given the field in the top half of the draw.

Withdrawals before the deadline are replaced by alternates (from the entry list); late withdrawals are replaced by lucky losers.

The only time there would be an on-site sign in for alternate spots is if the main draw alternate list was exhausted (due to withdrawals more main draw spots are available than alternates who want to play).

This happened this week in the Hamburg qualifying. Nine players withdrew & only six alternates wanted to play so the other three spots were filled from an on-site sign in:

All of these types of questions (& answers) are covered in the ATP rulebook. There have been no substantial changes in these rules for many years.

the only one i can give you that is apparently confirmed on a lithuanian news site, from a supposedly reliable source is that ricardas berankis defeated michael yani 6-4,7-5

but even that im not sure of because berankis was apparently 4-6, 5-6 down and then up dates stopped and the 6-4, 7-5 win for ricardas was found

I think they use the current rankings for these late alternates in the draw. Bubka and especially Klaasen rose a lot of places after Newport.
