Mats Wilander was right about Andy's game all along.

I remember in may or june right before the French Open. Wilander made a comment that stood out for me. He said that Andy Roddick's game has not improved at all under Gilbert's tutelage. He said Brad is just a glorified scout, and that Andy's wins last year were based on confidence and luck.
At first I balked at his comment. Mainly because Wilander is the same man that said Serena and Venus play the most mental game of tennis out there, and the WilliamsX2 break down their opponents mentally.
But now I am starting to believe that Wilander may be smarter than people give him credit for.

I think Gilbert has taken Andy as far as he can technically. Gilbert was never a good player groundstroke wise. But at the same time Andy's backhand was so atrocious it could have only gotten better. I think Andy should either get an all around coach that can improve Andy's backhand even more. Right now his backhand just keeps him in the point. He still can't generate winers off of it. Or Andy should add a specialist to his game that can help with volleying and backhand technique. Imagine how much better Roddivk could be if he could hit a decent volley. Alot of people think of Wilander as a former druggie, and don't give his musings of the the game alot of thought. But I think Mats was one of the smartest players out there. And while he couldn't help the blackhole known as Safin find his game. Andy should think about where his game is going, and compare this horrible year, to last year when he finished as year end #1.

Wilander doesn't know what he is talking about. Of course Roddick has improved immensely since he started working with Gilbert. Just because he is not having as good a year as last year, does not mean all of a sudden it's time to change coaches. Let's drop this crazy idea that coaches should be dismissed as soon as things start going wrong.

Year is not over yet and Andy could still pick up some more titles. You don't have to win majors every year in order to have a good year. That Roddick match last night could have gone either way. Just didn't go andy's way.

If Mats Wilander said what henree says he said about Gilbert and Roddick then Wilander wasn't right about Roddick or Gilbert. If Andy didn't drop the ball in a couple of big matches this year he would be having a great year.

And Brad Gilbert's coaching ability and buddy system has clearly worked well with Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick.

Roddick is tactically challenged and that's obvious, cat stop making excuses for Roddick. He didn't respect Johansson and didn't vary his game sufficiently to take Johansson out of his comfort zone, he had Federer on the rocks and couldn't finish him, that isn't luck, that's not taking your chances.
