It kills me to see the players who are ahead of him.

It's very likely Del Porto and Nalbandian will be out and maybe a few more injureis before then. When do they make the cut? WOuld he have time to pick up more points? Might be good if he could play a Davis Cup match to get a few points?

I think Gasquet will get into the Torotnto Draw, I expect some withdrawls.

DC doesn't offer ranking points?

DC doesn't offer ranking points?

Starting this year those who play in live DC rubbers may get ranking points depending on what other 500 tournaments are counted:

Q. What are the ranking rules for players who compete in Davis Cup?

A. Davis Cup points are awarded for World Group and World Group playoff ties only. Points allocated are as part of the 500 point category. Davis Cup does not count towards a player's commitment to the 500 category. The points accumulated in the four ties within the previous 52 weeks can become part of a player's 500 category if:
1. Player has not more than three 500 results within the previous 52 weeks and Davis Cup result(s) is better than lowest best other.
2. Player has four 500 results within the previous 52 weeks and Davis Cup result(s) is better than the lowest 500. Also, 500 0-pointers cannot be replaced.

Richard withdrew from Davis Cup. Tsonga too. Looks like Llodra and Benny have to carry the load with hopefully Monfils able to step it up.

http://www.lequipe.fr/Tennis/breves2010/20100702_164643_tsonga-forfait.html

It worries me that we never really heard what Richard's injury was (a nondescript Back/rib??) and is STILL bothering him. How maddening for him!

Cloudygirl
07-02-2010, 07:29 PM
Well that article says it's a recurrent injury from the AO which was a muscle tear? That contradicts what Richard said on his website about it not being an injury?

Better that he rests up and forgets Davis cup though if he has a niggle. More important to focus on matches with decent ranking points.

Haven't been here in a few days - was hoping when I checked back there would be news of Richard back practicing on the courts. I'd like to believe the old saying "no news is good news" but this worries me that we don't really hear anything.

Maybe he will show up to watch DC. Just saw the DC line up - Monfils and Llodra for singles and Llodra and Benny for dubs. Pretty much the best option given the choices, just hope Llodra can make it for 3 best of 5 matches.

He's resuming the training today according to L'Equipe (the rest is just his reaction to the DC win).

No, he won't play Hamburg, he'll be back in Gstaad. There's a long article about him in L'Equipe today, he prefers to have two full weeks of training:

DOMINIQUE BONNOT
A summary:
He was practicing yesterday with Deblicker and Cassaigne on an indoors clay court in RG. The journalist asks Richard why indoors and he answers: "because it's raining!" Actually, the weather was absolutely beautiful yesterday in Paris, they had only booked an indoors court in case it would have rained (= even in French, Richard sometimes gives weird answers.)
He was supposed to practice with Gaël, but Gaël changed his mind because he was too tired, hence the training with Cassaigne who belongs to the Lagardère Group.
He has been out for one full month now because of the back injury. He says he was in so much pain that he couldn't even hold his racquet. He practiced a little on Sunday with Deblicker and yesterday was the first time he was hitting with a sparring-partner.
He won't go to Hamburg because it would be too short. He prefers to take two weeks to practice well and not be in pain at all anymore. The injury has been a "real pain" because it was hurting even in everyday's life. It's a relapse of the 16 mm tear he had in Australia. The tear opened up again during the Queen's and it takes time to heal up. Too bad, but he hasn't forgotten how he was playing in Bordeaux, Nice and RG, it's still very vivid in his mind, he knows this feeling will come back. The journalist says he's all smile and looking full of energy.
He was hoping to have recovered for the Davis Cup, he tried to resume the training on the 27th of June, but it was impossible for him to play. He waited one more week, tried again with Deblicker on last Monday, but he was still in pain.
But yesterday he was feeling fine after a footing and a longer warm-up.
The injury is hampering him on serve and for his BH mostly. As he can't rely on his FH to win matches, he has to be patient. He doesn't want to force and reinjure himself. The goal is to be completely painfree by the time of the USO.
Deblicker says there's nothing sure yet, they will deal with the situation on a day-to-day-basis, but the schedule so far is: Gstaad, Toronto, Cincy, New Haven. Markus will be back for the North American events - or maybe in Gstaad already, but that's not sure yet.
And then Richard talks about the DC tie, he sounds very excited about it, especially since the SF might take place in Montpellier (in the South of France). He really looks very eager to be back on the court. "Right now I'm just at 70% of my abilities, but I hope to be back to 100% very soon."

Source: http://www.welovetennis.fr/richard-gasquet/25523-markus-de-retour

nothing special, it only says that Markus has joined him yesterday for practise in Roland Garros. But as we have been so short of news recently, it is good to hear something. And it also gives me hope that he will really be back next week.

He's playing better than I thought he would.

But the aggressive court position he had in Nice and RG is gone; he's playing way back or at least he is since i started watching. Looks like he is just starting to work his way back and build up his confidence again. And maybe the position has something to do with the altitude.

Nice BH to go 2-2. Richie finish this off in two and I can see the end before my plane which was delayed is ready to board. I was all mad that I had to start my day waiting for a flight and then I rememebred that maybe I could watch Gstaad- what a surprise to see that Richard was playing - the wait is a lot better now.

Not bad for first match since Queens but you can tell he's a bit rusty. Seems to be going for his shots but missing just a bit on some and playing way back - a better playing would be making him pay. hopefully he's just working his way back.

EDIT - he looks more aggressive on his service games but missing it on return games.

Yeah, that's true...I just expected him to play really bad and make a lot more errors than he did. But I didn't watch much of the match so I'm just commenting on what I saw.

Very happy he won and never got taken to deuce on serve. Only 9 points lost on serve :)

It's great to see him again. I thought he played well, agressive at times, sometimes not so. It was kinda hard to judge with the one camera stream. I got the feeling he was working his way into playing again. He's never played Dustov, so these matches can always be tricky, especially after a long time away. He won. I'm happy he's playing again.

From RG.net

Richard won 6-3 6-4 in 1h, 17 min.

1st set very easy: immediatly 3-0 for Richie (12 points to 3) and 6-3 in 27 min.

2nd set less easy: break (at 3rd breakballs) in the 9th games after 1 opportunity lost in the 7th game, then speed victory.

No breakpoints for Dustov in all the match: Richie controlled very well and curiously made more points with the second service (95%) than with the first one (72%).

Dustov didn't play bad, maintaned an high number of first services during the match (77%). His ranking (457) isn't real: 173, his best ranking (2007), is more correct. The difference between Dustov and Gasquet was evident but Richie, after 1 mounth and half of stop, returned exactly how we have left him on the grass. This is obiouvsly my sensation: not too many faults, some very good points won... In some occasion I noted the old and usual difficulty against the service but in general I'm satisfied.

This is the 1st round, the 2nd one against Daniel Brands (a young german who made very well in Wimbledon and whose ranking is improving) cuold tell us more. I saw Brands in an italian Challenger (before roland garros): he dominated it and he is dangerous!!!

Weak set point from Gasquet, thought the ball was going out, so he decided not to hit it, even though it was right at his feet.

Richard should have won the first set, but it has to be said that Brands served well. The longer the match lasted, the more Brand's serve declined and the rest of his game (if he has any :p) went with it. Richard just had to keep focused. His best quality in that match: not to give up after the loss of the first set. So, well done!

Another good win against a 'tall player'. A bad point on set point in the tiebreaker, but other than that, I can't complain. Brands just didn't have it at all in the third set and sometimes it is hard to keep focused when your opponent is struggling. I loved his reaction when he saved that breakpoint. I'm really glad he won, especially because I got up a little after 6am just to watch.

Fabio's Report

Richie wins 67 (5) 63 60 in 1h 35 min. Match very very strange with a good 1st set and 2 bad 2nd/3rd sets. In the 1st set the two player play very well on their service: Richie has 3 break balls in the 8th and 12th game (in this case 3 setpoints) but Brands uses his strong service to go to tie-break.

In the the tie-break Brands obtains immediatly a mini-brek, from 2-4 Richie goes 5-4 but here he commits some bad mistakes and for the 7-5 Brands.

In 2nd and 3rd set Brands tennis is very very very bad: his faults are thousands with forehand, backhand and also his wonderful service doen't help him more (36% of 1st services in 3rd set).

Richie wins easily: 2 breaks in 2nd set (1st and 9th game) and 3 breaks in 3rd where Brands is completely out of the court.

Richie lost too many occasions in 1st set but then he was lucky for Brand's many gifts. Richie also commits many faults (horrible drop-shots,
bad judgments in important occasion as in tie-break...)

I sincerely don't know how to consider and estimate this victory. Next match against a player totally different from Brands, the Spanish Montanes (ATP RAnking No. 23 and 4th in Gstaad's seeding). Richie defeated him in Stoccarda 2008 (clay): 63 76.

What do you think about this Gasquet and about his tournament? Perhaps it was better to go directly in USA... Richie seems to me not completely focused on this event...

A big hallo to everybody!

PS: Richie has left only 1 breakball in two matches played: in the 5th game of 3rd set against Brands when Richie was ahead 4-0!

Thanks Fabio :yeah:

I just realized that I can't remember the last time I saw him hit a shitty spinny loopy forehand inside the service box. Even when he plays so-so like today with some bad judgments (those droppers...), you don't see those ugly forehands any more.

I don't follow all of his matches religiously and clay might hide his problems a little bit but I think that's pretty encouraging.

I agree...clay can expose people with poor movement and poor fitness, and allows you to stand back and not play an aggressive game...so he has to fight against that to play his best tennis on clay.

and he seems confused to me, I hope his serve gets more consistent soon, that would give him more certainty.

edit: 3 good serves, including 2 aces, when bp down. Did he listen to me?

He looks out of sorts right now. 0-40, Montanes had 2 DF and didn't get a first serve in the whole game and Richard still couldn't break. Step it up Richie.

EWE that point was :o. And he rarely missed an overhead. He just looks really tight. Good thing Montanes in not playing too wel yet either of this set would be over. Chill Richie.

4-3 what was good in this game, taking his time to serve at deuce, no rushing as he did so often in the past.
