Wow!!!! That looks like Federer is around 2,500 ahead of Andy and still goes up if he wins USO :worship: Is this the highest margin ever a no.1 player had over no.2 since new ranking system gotten into effect? What was the highest lead that sampras ever had? Any idea?

With this lead he doesn't have to worry about his no1 ranking until FO of next year, I guess.

I hope that Roger can be the first player to amass 10,000 points in one season.

Highest ranking for Tim - totally deserved from my point of view, to be #3 in some stage of his career.

Besides, it's strange to find Nalbandian on 14...

Man, Henman is getting up there in the ranks...Is this his highest?

Hewitt must be kind of disappointed to not have moved despite getting to the semis...But he'll go up if he at least gets to the final...

I don't think that is possible, even if you win calender slam plus 4 or 5 TMS.

after US Open qf: Federer 6210 Roddick 3770 // 65%; if Federer wins the title though it goes up to 79% margin;

Comparisons from the past (thanks to Hops on rst/SMC who did these calcs earlier in the year):
2/21/00 Agassi 5045 Sampras 2811 // 79%
8/22/94 Sampras 5405 Goran 3182 // 70%
4/29/02 Hewitt 4635 Guga 2775 // 67%
1/27/97 Sampras 5774 Goran 3566 // 62%

With this lead he doesn't have to worry about his no1 ranking until FO of next year, I guess.

It's not that much actually. He has a lot to defend in the autumn, so unless Roger wins the USO, he could still be overtaken theoretically by either Andy or Lleyton for year-end number one. But that would be pretty unlikely because they'd have to win everything whilst Roger hardly won a match.

I hope that Roger can be the first player to amass 10,000 points in one season.

To get to 10000 points, you would need to win all four slams (4000 points), all nine TMS events (4500 points), the TMC (750 points) and a couple smaller tournaments (750 points).

I don't think even Roger Federer can do that. However, if he wins the US Open, he should have the #1 ranking until probably Wimbledon 2005.

There is no way he or anybody could do that.

He'd have to win, for example, the 4 Grand Slams (4000), the 9 Masters Series (4500) and the Masters Cup (750), plus (in this case) at least 3 International Series such as Kitzbuhel, Barcelona, etc. (900) to get just a little bit more of 10000 points. Which is about the same of saying he'd have to win almost every tournament he'd play at, especially the GS and TMS.

Kind of easy, don't you think? ;)

Don't forget Hewitt has zero Points to Defend between now and the start of 2005
as he took his Davis Cup Break last Year.

He could easily get the Number 2 spot off Andy

Yes, I think he will surpass Roddick and I think he deserves it.

Oh, I think Hewitt will come out of the USO at number 3. He only has to make sure he beats Johansson. He could lose to Federer in the final, but I doubt he'd lose to Henman, whose career high will (sadly) remain number four for the time being.

Yep, I think Hewitt will end the year number two as well, especially if he wins the USO.

Yea for Hewitt moving up to to 3 and Henman moving up to 4. I'm also happy for Massu to be in the top ten.

It still saddens me about the tumble that Ferrero has taken this year. I'm sure he will come back in 2005.

I don't think that Andy can overtake Federer for the number 1 rank, even if Federer does not win a match and Andy wins everything because Andy too has a lot of points to defend in the fall. Andy would have to amass around 2500 points to actually take over number 1, which means about 7-10 tournaments?

Yes, you're quite right, but at the time I was writing, Andy or Lleyton still could have made it mathematically, although probably not in practice.

Now that Roger has won the USO however, it's all over. He's won the Champions' Race and cannot be caught. Just how long will it be before the ATP actually announces it, I wonder?

The original thread was moved to the Statistics forum. It's still there, but not a sticky (but then there's only about 10 threads in there). Perhaps we could update that instead, then we'd all know where to look?
