Dancevic v. Mahut. How unfortunate a draw for both. Two of really 4 or 5 big threats to do major damage playing each other in R1. I want Nico to win it simply because he's playing well and I know he can do damage in the MD, whereas Frank is just coming back from injury.

Berankis v. Harrison is a great match too in R1. Winner of that match has a pretty good chance at qualifying, but I hope Santi makes it through that section, he definitely should win his first two rounds.

Navarro v. Meffert is a nice R1 match also.

Dent MUST qualify with the draw he has. Absolutely no excuse not to.

Donald has a good draw too, but Alcaide with that huge serve will be tough.

I would be pleasantly shocked if Bjorn qualifies with his draw.

Somdev has a good chance at qualifying if he doesn't play Bozo in QR3. Even if he does he could beat Bozo, who unfortunately plays to that nickname too often.

I hope Chris qualifies but I think he's going to struggle with Huta Galung, and he'll definitely struggle with Mannarino if they play.

I think the winner of Paire v. Evans will qualify from their section.

Jan has a decent chance at qualifying with his draw.

Levine has 3rd round points to defend, and I don't see him making it to the MD. I think one of Kamke/Sirianni/Kuznetsov will make it there.

I hope Mischa will qualify but he has a tough draw with Navarro, Begemann in R1, Meffert. He needs to qualify and start getting his career back on track.

The Soeda/Gonzalez quarter is wide open.

All in all, I like the draw outside of the fact Dancevic/Mahut/Koubek got paired with each other.

Good luck to Filip

As for the young guys:

Filip, I don't see him beating Kendrick at all. I don't like his chances. If he does beat Kendrick then he'll still have issues with Ward/Ouanna/Sweeting.

Berankis/Harrison winner is probably the favorite to win that section, but Evans/Smyczek would be a tough next opponent.

Rufin would probably beat Somdev if healthy but the fact he's just coming back and may be rusty will work against him against a solid player like Somdev.

Tomic is in tough with Yani in R1, ERV in R2, and all of the other four players he could face in R3 are difficult. That's a hard section of the draw there.

If Paire beats Evans, he should have a good chance at making it through.

I don't believe Harrison stands a chance to be honest with you...Berankis just trashed him a week ago at Nottingham - the winner from that section is gonna be one of the Berankis/Smyczek/Evans

interesting to see what Muller does. he should cruise to R3 but Ball is tough

Yes, Ricardas is the clear favorite in that match. He's more developed at this point in their careers. I think Smyczek/Evans is going to go deep in the 3rd, like 10-8. I don't see either beating Ricardas because neither hit with a lot of pace and Ricardas should overpower both guys. Actually I think Cipolla/Santi would be tougher in R3 because both have variety and Santi has a good backhand also.

Alves can definitely take out Gilles. The grass is slower now and Thiago likes medium-fast surfaces, that's his favorite surface. Muller should probably qualify with his draw but he's so inconsistent that you don't really know. Alves also played well at Wimbledon last year so he should have some confidence. I don't see Ball making it to R3.

Filo V.
06-13-2010, 08:16 PM
Also people, there will be several LLs. So just getting to the final qualifying round will be an accomplishment for some of these guys, who should then make it by main draw players withdrawing. That's why the 2nd round match is almost as important as the third round.

I'd be interested to see a Tomic vs. Doud match-up, as Tomic was out of his depth against Edouard last year after one set.

The validity of this comment is highly debatable, as the grass at Roehampton is not exactly the same as for the main draw. I'd probably still be inclined to agree with you, but caution is called for.

Oh, I thought they changed the grass there too and made it like Wimbledon, create uniformity, I didn't know they were different surfaces. That definitely would make a big difference, give the servers/aggressive players even more of an advantage.

I do think they try to do this, but the conditions are not really comparable and my impression is also that the wear on the grass at Roehampton is more considerable.

I think Yani will beat Bernard.

Ditto, though I really don't get how he qualified last year, as his game was very poorly suited to grass back then. But he should be way too solid for Bernard.

He's just a fighter with a big heart. Also, he's generally, as you say, solid, mentally and game wise. Which is something many lower ranked guys can't deal with, guys who don't go away for games at a time. He also is opportunistic in his attacking. He's smart, helped by his years at Duke, and that helps him in these major qualifying events.

These 16 guys I expect to qualify for the MD:

Dent
Rosol
Bozoljac
Muller
Meffert
Zemlja
Young
ERV (I'm completely torn on this section)
Kuznetsov
Mannarino
Bemelmans
Sweeting
Koubek (he will beat Mahut if they play--watch)
Evans (look out for King-Turner with an upset to make the MD)
Reynolds
Berankis

He's got a big serve. I think he's a joke of a player, but there is always that one surprise player who does something you never expect. I myself thought "WTF am I thinking, he doesn't stand a chance", but I don't know, that section of the draw isn't great. Evans is the most proven player on grass in that section but he's been horrible. Reister is better on slower/medium surfaces. But, I don't expect him to make it.

taylor dent

Ilija Bozoljac

im basing most of my prediction off the fact that i dont think what happened at the french will happen here, i think the seeds will have more success here.

Kudryavtsev is among those players i picked to make the upset, those to come though their draw that not to many people would give that chance to

I think seeds could have better chances, but grass is definitely the most "unique" of all the surfaces, so players who are more accustomed to the surface and have games that fit the surface better, will do better. There are several places in the draw where I can definitely see neither seed advancing.

Mischa has become a sad, sad joke. He basically just lost to a player who is a worse version of him. I can't believe how far he has declined.

Outside of that, I'm happy with the results of today!

Filo V.
06-15-2010, 01:26 AM
He just lost to Andrej Martin, who must be considered one of the weakest players (and among the least experienced of grass) in the QD.

Hahahaha, well I guess my thinking he's a joke was spot on :o:p And my prediction he could cause an upset, definitely not.

Ebden, Guez, Ball, Sweeting, Dent, Kendrick, C. Rochus, Jones, Kamke and Matosevic should win their matches. I would lean towards Kim beating Oswald but Kim has been awful this year, and he chokes in matches. Tomic probably is in the clear in his match, but you never know. I predicted Reynolds but I can see Witten coming back and winning that match.

Witten came back from losing the first set 5-7 to win 6-3 6-1 in the final two sets. I knew he would come back today. No-one can underestimate him when it comes to grand slam qualifying matches anymore. He just knows how to dig deep and get the job done.

polanksy really is a joke

he had 5-1 in the first set and it got to 5-6 before he won another game

then he was up 3-1 in the 3rd and never won another game

its not the first time he's choked like that this year either, its happened all the time.

Yeah, he definitely could have won this match, but I never expected him to even make the scoreline competitive since he seemed to be intentionally avoiding grass, instead opting to play clay challengers. Peter really seems to like clay given how much he plays on it. Anyway, he's definitely been a disappointment, I thought he would progress a little quicker than he has.

cowabunga Jesse Huta Galung just beat Chr. Rochus 4-6 7-5 8-6

After 1-5 in the first set, down 2-4 in the second, down break points for a double break in the second, blowing a break and 2 match point lead and being down 2 match points himself to winning 3 straight games.

I am so dejected now. Just disappointed. Seriously, it's like the 6th time this year alone Chris lost a match exactly like this. Oh well, I didn't expect him to qualify anyway.

I don't know who rates Somdev overly high, but he has a lot of fans because of his fighting spirit and likable personality. He's beaten some good players like Cilic and Haas. He's a good player but as a fan I can admit he's nothing really special, mostly a grinder. I think you just are mixing up supporting Somdev with actually overrating him.

If Boggo beats Mahut, a player who actually can do damage in the MD, it would be horrible. Boggo would just lose to Koubek in the next round anyway, though.

Nico isn't winning any points on return like at all, he'll need to get lucky and hope for a choke or something from Boggo, which is highly possible.

It's so over after that stunt. Nico will hold the serve here but eventually he'll be broken. To blow back to back chances when you can't get any points off return throughout the set is unforgivable.

Filo V.
06-15-2010, 07:08 PM
DeHeart won 6-3 in the third over Somdev.

Somdev had a break chance to get it back on serve in the last game but it wasn't meant to be. I'm not upset though because I expected absolutely nothing different. I'm just glad he won a match, and another American goes through.

Filo V.
06-15-2010, 07:34 PM
No, he won't break here. Nico will hold, and it will probably continue on serve or Nico will come close to breaking again and Boggo will find a way to stay in the match. Nico has had like 3 or 4 serve games now in the latter stages to win this and failed, it's going to catch up to him.

Exactly ;) He's the type of player you have to play well to beat, and he makes you beat yourself also with his ability to get everything back and not make errors. Recently he's improved his serve which has helped him move up the rankings. He needs to add some more power to get to the next level.

There are going to be a lot of LLs in the draw, like 4-6 LLs, so just getting to the final Q round is an accomplishment for these guys really.

Tomic is ahead 2 sets and a break.

Alcaide, Ilhan, Fischer and Evans have already qualified. I knew Martin had a really good shot of qualifying but I thought he would be tired. He sure fooled me, he's dangerous in the main draw.

I'll be pissed if Huta Galung qualifies since Chris should have beaten him in the first round, that should be him there. I'm surprised Adrian is having trouble in that match.

Dent is a joke....how can he have so much problems with...that...Ebden or something like that:confused:
Oh and Mannarino loosing against Huta Galung who could have lost in the 1st round against Rochus....wtf's happenin?:o

I'm not surprised Taylor is struggling with Ebden. Ebden is a good player.

berankis one set away from qualifying, up 7-5, 6-1 over ventura

kamke also giving levine all kinds of trouble

score 4-6, 6-2, 3-1 for kamke

and Bozoljac up 7-6, 6-4 over deheart

mahut looks like he's going to have to gut out another marathon match if he wants to beat koubek

misty1
06-17-2010, 03:27 PM
kamke just taken the 2nd set 6-2 off of levine

deheart up 4-1 over Bozoljac in the 3rd, hopefully just a sloppy set from Bozoljac.

Ryan had a *4-2 lead in the 4th set, blew it, and is about to lose the match to Robert. That happens so much in these qualifying events, the lack of mental strength compared to top players is glaring.

I love Santi but I knew he would lose badly to Berankis. Luckily, he'll likely get in as a LL again like at the French. Hope he gets a good draw.

Lastly, as long as Witten is in major qualifying, I guess it should be expected of him to qualify. He gets up for these events. Why he can't translate that to challengers is something he'll need to address.

what about levine losing to kamke? if he does. I didnt think kamke was supposed to be good on grass

He isn't really, his best surfaces are clay/medium hard. But his form is good and Jesse is not in good form. I voted for Kamke to qualify from that section based on those reasons alone, I'm not surprised with the result so far in that match.

Ugh, hope Dodig can take it to the decider.

Can't believe the draw Mahut has had :o

And Kamke in the Wimbledon MD, it seems. Kudos to him, he must have really rapidly improved himself on grass. Plus he is in very good form at the moment.

Wow Ryan. Are you kidding me. 6-5 30-0 to winning one more point. I guess your mental fragility will never change.

Oh well, congrats to Robert, and Ryan will be in the MD anyway so I'm not too upset.

I'd be very surprised. I see Jesse as someone with too much heart to give up / tank.

No. He just isn't equipped to beat a player on the level of Kamke and how he's been playing recently at this point in time.

Nico won 6-4 in the 5th over Koubek. What a tough draw he had but he showed how big of a heart he has and how great he is on grass to make it through. Hopefully he has energy saved up for the MD.

Fischer turned his year around in a hurry...

He sure did. I'm surprised it started by playing well on clay. Every time I saw him on clay, he was dire. But he's always had the type of game that can trouble players. Guys that hit the ball flat like he does are always dangerous.
