Now in the semis of a G1 in Germany. Just took out the top seed, #11 in the rankings, 6-4 6-4. Also in the finals of the doubles.

Pavic just won GA doubles title in Osaka (Japan) and played final in singles (lost 4:6, 6:1, 3:6 against his partner, one year older Japanese Uchiyama).
He should be in junior top 10 for the first time (he will be 3rd of his generation).

great, really great!!!
i didn't see that's happed because he played match (actually hole tournament) on completely other part of the worls only 4 days ago. and that was on hard, this is clay. in that situation almost anybody should beat 17 years old unexperienced player.

Pavic is on the entry list for the next Futures in Croatia, but he'll probably get a wildcard into the main draw. It's a tough draw, with the cutoff around 500.

Mate played Futures tournaments in GRB last week and again this week. He reached R2 both times.

Last week he beat the #7 seed, Blake Strode (#491) in R1 (excellent win!) but then lost to a player in the 800s.

This week he beat a top 40 junior in R1 but then lost to the #7 seed, Chris Eaton (#426; CH #317).

Mate has been making his way up the rankings nicely. He reached a CH ranking of 773 last week.

This week he's into the QF at Heraklion Challenger. In R1 he crushed the #4 seed Bloemke (#486, CH #302) 62 62. He was less impressive in R2 (needed three close sets to beat #1007 Kosler) but managed to win.

Also, he's at his CH doubles ranking of 211. Not bad for an 18 year old!

I was very impress with Mate. He's a great serve and volley player but unfortunately courts are too slow this days for that type of the game. I loved his serve the most. Not as fast but great placement with a nice kick. He needs to move better and gain few pounds. Under right coach, he should be in top 100 within two years.

misty1
06-21-2012, 03:49 PM
its depressing. He plays a style of play that almost no one does anymore and i dont know of to many youngsters that can serve and volley well. The slowing down of the courts is killing off his style of game

its refreshing watching him because he's not just someone who wants to pound the ball harder

ADMIN: Dobro nam došao Mate, čestitke na igri u dosadašnjem dijelu turnira. Posjetitelji stranice www.croatiaopen.hr imaju nekoliko pitanja za tebe - jesi li spreman? :)

MATE: nemam i vjerovatno ne bi ostavio karijeru :)

DARKO: Kakav ti je raspored do kraja sezone, tj. da li ces jos igrati ATP turnire i ciljevi za istu?

do i read this right, he wants to make top 150 by the end of the year?

he's also planning to play kitzbuhel so apparently he's counting on a wild card..he seems fairly confident so it seems like he knows he'll get it

i want to know how in the hell he's getting these wild cards. Umag makes sense but the univef open and kitzbuhel are a little surprising

AncicCilic
07-12-2012, 08:16 AM
Misty, he's planning of improving his rank about 150 more positions this year. :)

Also for Austria, he said he will play 4 tournaments there, one of which will be ATP Kitzbuhel so i guess he already presumes he will get the wild-card.

petar_pan
07-12-2012, 09:14 AM
He should get WC for every week because he desreve it with this two wins. Actually WCshould be only for young talents. About this two, his coach is ex Austrian DC captain, so it's logic for Kitzbuhel. On the other side he got that one in Holland via his promotor house.

If i calculated right, with win against Ferrero he will move to apx. rank 460-ish.
If he would win against Kuznetsov and reach QF he'd enter top 400 which would be really encouraging. Kuznetsov is the favourite but.... home court and seemingly good form give Mate a chance. :)

I know doubles isnt looked upon as high as singles but i think he could have a really great career in doubles, could even see him winning slams in doubles with the right partner.

Yeah. And that is great. Especially he will be great choice for DC. Dodig and he are really good team.
Croatia should have a great future with Coric and him. Coric should be garantion for 2 points plus Pavic in doubles and that is winning 3rd point. That's why it's great Krajan called Coric for Brits. It will be great to watch Murray (live).

im hoping he can do well in singles ..or start to do better soon because he does have a different style than most other youngsters and even most players

im just curious..does mate get much attention in croatia? i could see them being all excited about borna as he's moving up so quickly and marin is the star right now in singles with ivan obviously the big name for them in doubles.

Currently, there are 7 Croats in the top 300. Androic would be #8 (assuming the rest stay in). I don't remember there ever being that many--though I haven't paid close-enough attention.

And there are several youngsters who have an excellent chance to break through next year: Delic (20 yo; #351), Coric (17 yo; #367), Mate Pavic (20 yo; #370) and maybe Marcan (22 yo; #443). (Pavic and Marcan have already been in the top 300.) On the other hand, I can easily see Veic (#217) and Mektic (#282) falling out.

Good luck to all of them in 2014!

Id guess that to be the case too. Mate wants to get his singles career going. I personally see nothing wrong with having a great career in doubles but he's young and it is rare for a young player to focus only on doubles so its understandable.

I would guess they'll play all the big tournaments together as long as ranking allows it

Does anyone know real reason why did PAVANJA BREAK UP? For some reason I"m not buying b/c Mate wanted to Focus on his single career. Any rumors?

mate should work on finding a permanent partner. him and ivan always do well when they play together.

although i guess fidning a permanent doubles partner may not be high on his list of concerns

And instead of playing the Bryan brothers [1], as was expected, they will play Granollers/Lopez [12], who upset the Americans.

Still very tough opponents, but better than the brothers.

Good luck!

im not all that surprised he qualified here. given the way he likes to play he should do well on grass..its just a shame he wont get many chances to play on it..in fact this is probably the only one. unless by some incredible miracle he gets some kind of wild card to qualies for wimbledon

but he should do better on the faster surfaces too so..fingers crossed he can get his ranking up again in the coming season

gabashvili would probably be the best spot for him to end up..him or lu. yeah lu is great on grass but i'd still like mate's chances over him then brown or janowicz

Ferrer has pulled out and Gonzalez has probably never seen a grasscourt before so this is a golden opportunity for Pavic, especially as his game is made for grass. Let's see if he rises to the occasion.

i dont think its lack of belief thats held him back its the fact that his game doesnt really work on slower surfaces and unfortunately for him tennis is currently in a state when everything is getting slowed down. he'll always do well on grass and maybe faster courts coming up will be good for him
