I am soooo happy he got a WC! And with the state of the entry list he could do really well. *fingers crossed*

Praying that he's finally back 100% healthy. I saw him play in Miami and it was so depressing

gilles has a very nice draw

evgeny korolev in the first round, the guy who hasnt even won a match in forever

a qualifier in the 2nd round

most likely llodra in the quarter final

so i could definately see atleast a quarterfinal appearance here

if he gets past llodra feliciano lopez most likely awaits in the semis

Was hoping Mika would stay away from Gilles' side of the draw:(. Nevermind, if he goes as far as QF, I'm happy.
Every tournament Korolev entered, I cheered for him to win a match, but please don't start now in this tournament :p.

I saw him! Sorry I couldn't take any pictures but I saw him watching a womens match on the field and then I kept my eye on him til he went on the practise court. He hit with Ward (:help:) but he was hitting so well and made me realise just how much I have missed his game. He seemed happy and although I wanted to go up and talk to him, the alpha male in me stopped me from doing so.

I will be going on Monday because I had so much fun so i'll try and take pictures of him then.

You're making me want to go to Eastbourne :)

But I just goggled it and it's 1017km away and would take 11 hours and 29 minutes to drive, (according to the RAC) and assuming I had a car that could go that far in a oner not needing a towtruck or garage :sobbing:

Today in L'Equipe:

DOMINIQUE BONNOT

“Database errors” galore again. :armed:
I don't have time for a proper translation, sorry, and it's not easy to summarize because there aren't many facts, it's all about Gilles describing his current state of mind, which is pretty confused.
They interviewed him yesterday after a 2 hours practice session, the journalist doesn't really comment on his game, just says he was talking a lot!
Gilles says he can't assess at all his current level. But he should stop thinking so much about it too, he's always wondering on the court: "how did I use to play my FH/BH in this situation? Did I use to attack on this kind of ball?" etc.
He says it's too hard to admit that his game won't be back over night. Going into a match thinking "I'm going to lose today" is not the right approach anyway, he needs to be able to play for the win - but without judging on himself as much as he's doing atm.
He says that he might have a 3-0 record against Korolev, but it hasn't always been easy, he had to run so much in their match in Bangkok last year.
The journalist noticed that he was not chasing down all the balls yesterday in training, as if he was afraid to hurt himself. Gilles: "No, that's not the point. I've just gotten out of the habit. It's subconscious. 'Knots in my mind' I need to untie. There's anxiety, too. I have the impression that if the guy is dictating the rallye, I won't be able to run and it's going to end up badly for me. I do everything I can to prevent him from being in control of the game, while it used to be a tactic in the past, I was doing it deliberately... I'm not completely confident/serene yet."

All SB watching, there's no stream.

Gilles was down a break in each of the 3 sets and he managed to get back. I'm sure Zhenya helps a lot to let him back in. He's serving lower than 50% (I can't say that's unusual though :p). And he has like 9 DFs :o. All and all, I can't imagine this is a pretty match to watch. But a win is a win ;).

Love that they are so smitten by Blake, a caption of his pic said: Is last year's AEGON Championships finalist James Blake, top to toe in white, and looking rather angelic.... So glad Gilles is playing again! :D

Truc, your translations are the best. "Knots in the mind" -- Gilles is a thinker compared to much of the tour.

It'll surely be a building process. His first rise up the rankings was like that. I hope he can do it again.

Btw, it's ironic all the complaints and sniping comments directed at Gilles in GM. I actually love the look of his game and his form on serves and grounstrokes. There are many players on tour with uglier games and more obvious weaknesses.

It'll be good to see him on court again.

Truc
06-15-2010, 06:36 AM
You're welcome, I liked the "knots in the mind" too, very spot on!

Today's interview in L'Equipe:

Truc
06-15-2010, 07:06 AM
He showed two different faces during the match. He took a perfect start. Then at the end of the 1st set he started to hold a press conference on the court at the same time as he was fighting: "Not one service winner! ... It's driving me crazy! ... I'm sick of not being able to hit a cross FH!"
He lost the 2nd set TB despite having a MP and it was not looking good for him at the beginning of the 3rd set. The live commentary went accordingly: "If only I was able to serve, I would beat him in straight... I have no condition... I haven't hit one single winner in the whole match!"
Then out of the blue he calmed down and had the little bit of luck one needs on grass to pull out the win.

The interview:
The journalist says the match was strange, with a lot of ups and downs from both players.
Gilles says he played the MP well, even though he had trouble taking control of that rallye. He "forced" Korolev to play a difficult shot and to hit a long line winner of a low-bouncing ball, and Korolev did it.

The knee:
There is a risk to reinjure the knee during an estimated period of 2-3 months. It's not like a strain where you can run completely normally again as soon as the injury is over. He will feel easier in his mind after 3 months on the tour. But right now, he can't say to himself: "allez, everything is fine, yippee!" He's doing what he can...

His attitude on the court was not flawless:
He tries to have the right attitude in training, but he's not serene enough yet to stay focused on what he has to do. His attitude deteriorated during the match, his serve was giving him so much trouble. Since he was very tensed on his serve, his body was starting to ache all over by the end of the 2nd set. He wasn't able to relax. It was tough. But he calmed down well, it's great to have won.

What was different from his former matches?
In the past, even when he wasn't playing well, he used to think that he was at least able to run all over the court and that the opponent would need to spend a lot of time on the court to beat him. He was bringing everything back, even if it was at 2 km/h only. If he tries to do the same now, he will most probably end up in the "infirmary".
On the other hand, his upper body is stronger now, he can serve hard during a longer time. He is absolutely not worried about his ability to be back at the top if the knee issue settles down in the long term. But his speed and his movement will be the deciding point. Depending on how good his movement is, he plays like a top 50 player, top 30 or top 10.

All in all, he's happy with the match, at least he will be able to play a 2nd match. He doesn't know his opponent at all (I'm not sure if he has never heard of Kuznetsov or if he means he hadn't even checked who he would play in the 2nd round). He will try to recover well now, but he will certainly feel some pain this morning.

The body aching all over again during/after a match. That's the thing, being too tense has just been a big problem that hinders his physical just like last time when he tried to return. If he can relax a little more, that will help not putting too much strain on the body. I know it's the hardest thing to be able to relax. But I really think the tension on the body is the cause to his physical woes. He needs to find a way, do some meditation or sth. Idk. Oh well, I just hope and pray he won't re-injure himself in any way. If he has to play mediocre for the next 3 months to not put his body in risk, so be it. I'm sure when he's confident enough to know that his body won't break down anymore, he will be able to get back to top form.

3rd match on Court 1 tomorrow. Is there a stream?

http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2010/741/op.pdf
From the comments I've read elsewhere, there were streams for today matches. I've haven't personally watched any though.

Come on Gille
I love you because your from Twighlight.
Eastbourne field is nothing. You should rip them to shreds :hearts:

bar Kuznetsov, Llodra & co :p

Iivescorehunter or Bet365 might have livestream for ATP Eastbourne Court1
Eurosport might show Watson if they can't resist. Hoping they will stay on court 1 aswell

Come on Gille
I love you because your from Twighlight.

Do u not love the tennis player Gilles Simon ?

bar Kuznetsov, Llodra & co :p

 well, I'm beginning to think I'm giving too much credit to Kuznetsov, eventhough he's Wimby Jr champ last yr and on a pretty good streak at the moment after 3 consecutive wins on grass plus he's young and powerful and the unknown factor to Gilles as well as Gilles' own issues...:p. If he gets to play Mika, then I'll have less doubt cos the outcome is somewhat predictable :p.

Currently there's nothing listed on liveScoreHunter yet. But they will likely update later the day. We'll see.
3rd match is a more reasonable morning hr for me. My stream capturing thingy (whatever it's called), just the demo version, was never able to capture any livestream (not sure why but probably it will work if it got paid), but I'll give it a try tomorrow anyhow Les, just don't have high hope for it.

there is a part of me that wants gilles to lose tommorrow simply because i would rather not see him lose to llodra again and if they do play eachother llodra would probably destroy him right now so i would rather not see that.

gilles cruising through the first set, up 4-0 right now

and serving alot better at 65%

takes the first set 6-1

misty1
06-16-2010, 03:44 PM
andrey putting up a better fight in the second

up a break 3-1

gilles breaks right back for 2-3

misty1
06-16-2010, 04:09 PM
a real battle here in the 2nd

6-5 andrey leads

gilles had a chance to break for 5-4 at 15-40 on andrey's serve but full credit to andrey who held off both break points

kuznetsov takes the 2nd set 7-6(7-3)

and now gilles is double faulting all over the place

3 of his 7 have come in the 3rd set alone

misty1
06-16-2010, 04:43 PM
gilles in trouble in the 3rd set, falling into a pattern of fighting tooth and nail to hold serve while andrey holds relativley easyily

12 return points for andrey in the 3rd compared to 4 for gilles

love hold with aces number 3 and 4 for andrey for 5-5

followed by love hold for gilles

tiebreaker time!

gilles has lost the last 2 he's played

4th match on Center Court tomorrow. Finally, there should be a stream, except, not sure if this is the match I want to see :p. Well, he beat Richard the first time ever this year, maybe he can do it. And seeing that he has 2 tough battles already, even if he only plays one more match this week, it's not a bad thing, moderation could be the key to maintain healthy. Anyway, I'm pretty happy, maybe his serve and movements ain't up to par yet, but his fight never slips a step :yeah:.

There's nothing about the match today in L'Equipe, just a few lines about the upcoming match against Llodra at the end of another article. It made me smile because you can feel the usual love of Gilles for Mika - and Tulasne is back to his usual "Gilles is so amazing" again:
Llodra is leading 4-0 in the h2h, but Tulasne believes he can do it: "It will be very difficult because Mika, who is helped by Amélie atm, has big goals on grass, but Gilles impressed me today. It will be a mental battle." Simon smiles, just happy to have been able to run during almost 2 hours: "My knee is fine, but for the rest... nothing is working anymore!" The next matches are a bonus: "Even though he isn't a better tennis player than me, Mika has always beaten me. It weighs a lot. Not everything is working in my game, but I'll try to win. It's interesting to see if I'm still up to the fight or not."

I know, eh. It's infuriating . But then, he seems to be in a great form lately though, so Gilles has no chance when he himself is not that in shape. But anyhow, I like Mika so I hope he plays well in Wimby (as long as he's not in Gilles' path ;)).

As always, he was soft-soaping Gilles' peformance. Actually, for the last year and a half, the only time I remember him saying something remotely negative about Gilles' performance was about his win against Ljubo at Bercy, when he was slicing and dropshotting out of his mind. His reaction in L'Equipe today:
He was not "furious", but looked very disappointed: "Each time I need to be more accurate, each time I had to hit a passing-shot which was not particularly difficult, or to find the answer to a dropshot I had reached with ease, I got a bit panicky." He is quite harsh with himself: "The key is the forward game. I haven't hit one single winner in 3 matches! I held my own from the baseline. But I was unable to play an effective attacking shot, I didn't dare to play a volley, even easy ones. I realize all the things I'll have to improve in 4 days until Wimbledon! The slightest attacking shot scares me!"

It was pretty terrible indeed to see him always play a completely harmless groundstroke when it looked like the court was wide open, there was no punch at all in his shots then, not one of those "coups de fusil" ("rifle shots") he likes so much.

Wimbly MD, Gilles' quarter:

Verdasco - Fognini
Russell - Riba
A Beck - Baker
Vliegen - Benneteau

Almagro - Seppi
Kamke - Garcia-Lopez

Kendrick - Tsonga

Ferrero - Malisse
Reister - De Voest
Hernandez - Dodig
Stakhovsky - Querrey

Simon - Alcaide

He says in L'Equipe he doesn't know Alcaide, but it's not that much of a problem in best of 5 matches, he has more time to analyze the game of the opponent. He's more focused on himself atm anyway, he says he's still a bit worried because of his knee and also because his body is aching all over.

Gillou has an early break, that'll be good for his confidence (:tape:) Allez!

Good he's resisting attempts to jinx him. 3-0 :)

33 mins 1st set 6-3. no DFs, 9 winners to 4 UEs, 44% 1st serve. Gillou's on fire

2 love service holds for Alcaide but Gillou seems to be struggling more on serve

No stream here either but on ES live commentary thingy, they say he's not playing that well, Alcaide's UEs have made most of the job so far. But then again, it's ES (they already got the score wrong in the second set, Alcaide went from 3-2* to *2-2 then 2-3*! haha).

http://www.fft.fr/wimbledon/2010/default.asp?ID=6287

He says he's improving every day. He works a lot in training and he's pleased because he was able to put into practice what he does in training today.
The serve and the returns worked well, the game from the baseline is still far from what he's able to do, but at least he got a lot of free points with his serve and he returned well, much better than he did lately. It's nice because Alcaide was serving very hard.
He isn't feeling much pressure, he just tries to do his best. He's been playing again for 5 weeks only, it's obviously too early to be back at his best, but he's really trying to give his very best every day in training and to improve day by day, he keeps saying that.
He's not worried about the future, he hasn't lost his tennis, he just needs to recover his condition and his movement, the rest will come back naturally. The main risk would be to be too impatient, but he's aware of it.

Wimbledon 2010: Simon handed walkover into third round

Wimbledon Championships
Venue: All England Club, London Date: 21 June - 4 July
Coverage: Live on BBC One and Two, HD, Red Button, BBC Sport website (UK only), Radio 5 live, 5 live sports extra; live text commentary online and on mobile phones; watch again on BBC iPlayer Full details of BBC coverage
Gilles Simon
Simon reached the fourth round at Wimbledon last year

Gilles Simon of France went through to the third round at Wimbledon - and a meeting with Andy Murray - without hitting a ball.

The 26th seed was handed a walkover after his opponent, Illya Marchenko, pulled out of the match with an injury.

The Ukrainian, who won his first round match after Michael Berrer retired, is believed to have a shoulder problem.

Simon, 25, is a former world number six, has lost three of his previous four matches against Murray.

The pair have never met on grass.

Topped off with a picture of Llodra

Didn't say anything particularly interesting, just that he lost to Andy twice in 2008 when he was playing his best tennis, but now he's putting no pressure on himself, just concentrating on his own form, and the crowd will be against him, so nothing to lose etc... Seemed to be looking forward to it! :p He looked nice and relaxed - lots of smiles and laughter! :inlove: (BTW Gillou, not everyone in the UK will be cheering against you...!) ;)

Well, so far this Wimby has been a bit unpredictable, who would have thought Fed would be challenged in the first week, Nadal is down 2 sets to 1 atm, Nole almost got upset in R1 (but that's not a surprise these days).
