Looks like the move from Indianapolis has done absolutely nothing to change the quality of players that show up.

List is below average, and cut off will be below 100 once guys withdraw. Only 4 players that can draw fans (Isner, Hewitt, Baghdatis, Blake).

I'm sure Donald will get a WC and probably Kei too. Lleyton probably the favorite to win this event.

Interesting...I hope they do well.

Will be fun to see how Isner and Young will respond to playing "at home".

Yes, but with his four years spent at the University of Georgia he will no doubt enjoy great crowd support ;)

Yes, but with his four years spent at the University of Georgia he will no doubt enjoy great crowd support ;)Isner went to UGa (in Athens, not Atlanta) which is a bitter rival of Georgia Tech, the major school in Atlanta. You won't find any GT fans cheering for someone from UGa in sports or in life as the two fan bases are polar opposites not only in sports, but also in academics & pretty much everything else. (aka "Clean Old-Fashioned Hate") You would have better odds witnessing Lebron James & Byron Scott entering into a civil union together than witnessing a GT fan cheering for a UGa alumnus.

Of course, in the last twenty years Atlanta has been one of the fastest growing cities in America w. as much as 40% of the current population having migrated there from somewhere else in the U.S. & most of those people don't care much about either UGa or GT (& a lot of the people buying tennis tickets, including tourists, probably don't either).

There are many many more UGA fans than GT fans in the world. UGA fans are more spread out as well and overall are more supportive of their sports teams. Atlanta natives that have no ties to GT directly don't care about the Jackets at all. Plenty of UGA fans will be there, Athens is very close to Atlanta anyway.

There are a ton of UGA fans where I live in Clemson country. It;s more of a one-sided rivalry anyway. GT gates UGA the most but UGA probably hates Florida and Tennessee more.

Yeah, a big part of that is the fact that UGA is a large public school and GT is a small engineering school. Georgia Tech may be in Atlanta but far fewer people attend it, and it's extremely demanding academically from what I've heard. Add to that the fact that many smarter kids may not be as in to sports (maybe being rather stereotypical), and the state should be dominated by Bulldog fans.

Hardly small by any standard. UGa may have more students, but both GT & Emory have more alumni in Atlanta where the tournament is being played. Georgia is a large state & a majority of USTA Southern memberships from Georgia are concentrated in the Atlanta Metro area. There will probably be more tourists from other states than there are Georgians from outside Atlanta & its suburbs.

Oops good catch...it is still about 15,000 less students than UGA which would add up over time. I think that any GT alum or students that went would be quite respectful, even if their rivalry is bitter. It is Isner's first tournament since Wimbledon and the match

Could this count for his ranking?who cares about his ranking, he needs the match practice. great news.

as for Isner, I don't really think it matters where he is from or where he went to school. After what he did at Wimbledon, he's gonna get amazing support in the US.

3rd WC to James Ward http://www.atlantatennischampionships.com/roddick_accepts_wild_card_becomes_top_seed/

Why does the event give a wildcard to Ward? Is it a 'trade' for Ryan Harrison at Queens?
There are lots of young Americans that could really benefit from being in an atp event in Atlanta.

Moder

It looks too that Dent and Russell are not in directly yet so they would have to qualify while Ward goes in directly?

It was indeed a wild card trade for Queen's. The LTA feel a bit guilty not giving James a wildcard for Wimbledon after he got to the QF's of Eastbourne.
