fabregas coming off a huge injury into the wc and has been injured in training as well, but the accepted reasoning by the experts on the wc thread is that del bosque is a complete idiot who knows less than any of the fine posters on this board and generally has his job only because he kisses hierro's ass better than scoobs does jm's.

so i would go with the latter explanation if i were you :yeah:

I haven't seen the WC thread, so I don't know their reasoning. All I am saying is that if you are the favourite then you should take some risks and try to avoid overtime and a possible penalty lottery.

Article in my newspaper this morning:
In the press conference after the final, the Dutch coach Van Marwijk lashes out to the referee, claiming that he was influenced by Spain and that Puyol should have gotten red...
...after which he got not only the Spanish but also the Italian and the English press on his back: "Oh yeah? What about De Jong and Van Bommel? You're awefully quiet about them, aren't you?"
...after which Van Marwijk sank a bit deeper into his chair.
(afterwards, I saw him on tv acknowledging that the best team had won).

On Dutch tv, they did find a way to call it a Dutch victory after all by saying that Spain learned to play like this under the guidance of Dutch coaches like Johan Cruyff and Ruud Krol and such. Too bad that the Dutch team forgot about this sort of game. I still think it's a shame that a legend like Cruyff doesn't have a world title.

Dutch famous person who sometimes does work for Flemish tv BEFORE the final:
This is it, we're going to win this, I can feel it.
Flemish journalist: just don't drink too much please because we would like to talk to you afterwards.
Afterwards, Dutch guy again: Man, I'm used to defeats, those 2 previous lost finals still hurt but now, an entire new generation will learn to live with bitter defeat. However, that was so offside, it wasn't funny.
Flemish journalist: It wasn't offside.
Dutch guy: ...maybe not the second time but the first time...
Flemish journalist: No, it was not offside, believe me. Just watch the footage afterwards.
Dutch guy: "oh well, Spain did deserve to win it after all"

I may not have supported the Dutch team but what a sad ending for the Dutch team. It's ironic that beforehand, Van Marwijk said that you can't win this thing beautifully ("losing beautifully is still losing" was one of the slogans I saw on tv), only to see Spain win it with the sort of total football the legendary Johan Cruyff had in mind (despite the final not at all being a thing of beauty).
Not playing beautiful football is one thing but playing like thugs is taking it to the other extreme.

Johan Cruyff: "I may be Dutch but I support the football Spain play. It is the best advertisement we have for the World Cup."

First half. Johan Cruyff said he’d feel “intense joy” if Spain won the final, a declaration that possibly made him as popular in his home place as Nigel De Jong is with Xabi Alonso’s Ma.

What I don't get is how De Jong himself is moaning about a bad referee for not giving a corner at the end and leaving out stuff he did himself.

If that referee had been good, he would have received a red card. Reading the Dutch newspapers, just about any oranje fan is embarrassed about De Jong's actions and they urge him to shut up because he's just about the last person who should speak up about the referee being bad.

My niece, 14 years old since February, was talking non-stop about this boy she's seeing. Wondering what happened to her former boyfriend, she said that he's history. She said something about him threatening other boys with a knife.
Apparently - so her mother told me later - the former boyfriend got really jealous over another boy who was trying to get her attention. She told boy n°2 that she likes him but she already has a boyfriend so they can only be friends.
Boy n°1 got insecure and threatened the other boy up to the point of taking a knife to school to emphasize his threat.
:cuckoo:
Her mother told me that she's not yet exactly aware of how dangerous it can be to send mixed reactions (she's aware that she's a good looking girl who has men fighting over her...but now, she needs to learn how to not get into dangerous situations without realising it).

I think she's in luck that she has a 15-year old cousin who is somewhat acting as her big brother at times.

http://www.volkskrant.nl/sport/article1399654.ece/Cruijff_Nederland_hard_en_grof

Translated:
Johan Cruijff qualified the game of the Dutch team in the WC-final as "hard and crude". The legendary former football player denounced the defensive playing style and considered Spain to be the deserved winner.

"The game was ugly, hard, crude and much too defensive. Absolutely not colorful and with not enough football in it"
<...>
According to Cruijff, it was mostly the fact of feeling powerless that led them to this way of playing: "you're playing anti-football if you think that this is the only way to beat the opponent. The Netherlands played well for twenty minutes only to change to kicking and provoking"

:worship: Preach it, Johan.

I see something similar in my 14-year-old niece as well but not to this extreme. She wants to be grown up but she's still a little girl in some ways.

As for the kid with the knife, here that's grounds for expulsion from school. :scared:

I wonder why they stage a protest in the middle of the summer. We had a general strike in Greece last Thursday. If I were, say, minister of the interior, I would wish such well timed strikes as instruments to vent popular frustration. Just saying.

I wonder why they stage a protest in the middle of the summer. We had a general strike in Greece last Thursday. If I were, say, minister of the interior, I would wish such well timed strikes as instruments to vent popular frustration. Just saying.

The humble strike.

Have to say the more of the Fog I see, the more I dislike.

Vinciguerra he is going to retire soon and disappointing how his career went. Though the Koellerer incident where he was so pissed off was funny, but the DC heartbreak he had as well.

Summer clay events, big parties, plenty of suspect matches to say the least. Umag have the right idea starting their matches at 5pm. Too hot during the day and they are all on the beach anyway.

I quote from the introduction:

"In an episode of the sitcom Seinfeld, Elaine Benes uses a contraceptive sponge that gets taken off the market. She scours pharmacies in the neighborhood to stock a large supply, but it is fi nite. So she must "re-evaluate her whole screening process." Every time she dates a new man, which happens very frequently, she has to consider a new issue: Is he "spongeworthy"? "

"When Elaine uses up a sponge, she is giving up the option to have it available when an even better man comes along. Therefore using the sponge amounts to exercising a real option to wait"

Finally, the Man gives a fair warning to the faint-hearted not to proceed reading beyond the introduction: :haha:

"Stochastic dynamic programming methods must be used."

The take-away is that, depending on the amount of sponges available, there is a threshold value below which men are rejected. :D

I like the simplicity of the model  but I am not sure about the implications: How to signal a high value?

Too bad Andreas didn't have a proper career due to injuries. Summer clay events are great, they are more relaxed and there are some excellent matches. There is something lost with the end of best-of-five finals.

 My sympathies, Hilde. What were they protesting this time?
Something to do with the EU wanting the dairy farmers to work with fixed contracts (to be able to regulate the milk prices and thus, better protect the farmers) and the farmers don't agree.

As for the kid with the knife, here that's grounds for expulsion from school. :scared:

Agreed, Kitz 95 when Albert Costa beat Muster in 5. They have a challenger there this year and I told you the whole story with Tiriac and that event.

Is Kederis still alive or faking accidents again?

Andreea, did you see this and here are some anti-Rudisha commentators.

Tiriac and his inverse Midas touch, taking over an excellent event and turning it to crap.

Kenteris has opened a luxury resort at a great mountanous place in North-West Greece (Zagorohoria). There was not sufficient proof legally that he faked the accident so the charges were dropped and in return he will never compete in public. Thanou I think is also doing fine, they told me she is selling nutritional supplements to athletes. Yes, some people lack any sense of irony.

It wasn't quite like that Merton. He had the licence to the event, but there were some other factors not tennis related and once that happened it was downhill from there.

The Greek population of Melbourne loved Kenteris, but all the nonsense that went around. He never raced after that.

It was like Ludmila Enquist, the former Nazorenkho. She blamed the ex-husband for the first test she failed, then she moved to Sweden with the new man. Won a gold in hurdles, then won a gold at Winter Games and failed another drug test.

You seriously can't deny that for the style of play that led them for success. The Spanish needed a particular type of player and one that is a lot quicker than Raul. Sentiment doesn't have a place at pro sport, even less so these days. Tough decisions had to be made. You said it yourself look at the team dynamic they have had for since the rebuilding started.
