The streak is over, and what a streak it was. Ironically it was a streaky match from Federer; some classy play in the first, but his level dipped slightly thereafter.

Robin played well throughout.

And -- somewhere -- Rafael Nadal just shat his pants.

I know that multiple users will say that Federer did not play great, but he just got outplayed. Congrats to Soederling, he never dropped his impressive level, while Fed showed again that he is not a mental giant by giving up a crucial break at the restart after the rain break.

bluefork
06-01-2010, 05:44 PM
That was some insane hitting from Soderling. He was basically going for broke on every shot and making it.

Oh well. I can't see anyone ever matching 23 SF in a row.

Sad. Roger too weak on the important points. Then total suckage after the rain delay. And so it ends at 23.

Heroic by Soderling.

The tennis he played to hold serve from 0-30 down twice in the third set was quite incredible.

Feel a bit sad for Fed that his epic semifinal streak is over, but it had to come at some point in time and there's not many guys on tour who can do what Soderling did today.

Roger just didn't play well enough.

I am going to put some money on Soderling for the title. The idiot bookies will still favour Nadal but Nadal is going to get outhit again.

Topspin Forehand
06-01-2010, 05:46 PM
I was wrong. I thought Soderling had no shot against Federer. Federer looked very sluggish and not aggressive at all. Anyways congrats to Soderling and Nadal will have to earn this one more as Soderling is by far a tougher player for Nadal.

Fed looked good only in the 1st set and from there it was down hill. Never had a chance with the heavy conditions. Oh well, 23 match SF winning streak over, but will probably hold that record for a helluva long time. Fed owed Sods one anyway for beating Nadal for him last year. Good luck Soderling, may he make it to the final and beat Nadal again!

Fed has to be feeling like total sh** right now, but everyone knew sooner or later, the streak was going to end, just like everything else does. I officially crown Robin Soderling as "The Giant Killer". He's got some serious game and now a chance to win maybe win his first slam!!

The Norse Gods helped the Toad with rain-break at 5:5 in the third ;)

Cranky Soderling played an amazing match, had had easy run to the quarters and today showed an immense power. Credit to him for three new things:

1) high level of concentration from the very beginning
2) improved running
3) ability to soften his "wooden wrist" at playing in quick movement being close to the net (I suppose it spoiled a little bit Federer's tactics)

@Sweet Cleopatra
06-01-2010, 05:49 PM

Match ended in the 3rd game of the 3 rd set. It wasn't Roger's day. Robin played great though. That serve was on fire. Unreturnable at times. 215, 220, 230 km/h, amazing. Even the 2 nd serve was amazing. The set point for Fed in the 3rd set decided the match. Hope you take the title Robin.

Fed played a great first set (great serve % and 16-3 winner/error ratio), Soda was a bit nervous, then fed dipped a bit in the second and soderling gained more and more confidence.

The he just opened up and it was over. Some of the shots he hit were just amazing.

I don't want to speak too soon, but a Soderling-Nadal final is something to secretly to look forward to.

Sunset of Age
06-01-2010, 05:52 PM
Fantastic performance from Robin, what else is there to say. Had a slow start, but as soon as his serve began to come back to the level of his earlier matches (read: beginning of the 2nd set), he was cruising all along. Fed had no chance whatsoever, Sod was by far the better player. :hatoff:

Feds - too slow again, bad serving, and his shots lacked the 'bite' they needed to have against the very sharp Sod. And I'll say it again: a button to 'turn on your game for GS tournaments' does NOT exist, whatever many have been claiming over here recently.
The streak had to end some day, and today it did. Too bad, but those things happen.

Those who think Soderling has no chance to win this, haven't been watching his - and Federer's - matches.
"Results from the past are no guarantee for the future", as anyone should know by now. If the conditions are like they are today - wet, windy - it will highly favour Soderling's game, in contrary to Federer's, whose game is much more at risk. Soderling's mindset will be totally different than last year's, when he was already over-the-moon happy to have reached his first GS final - he's an established top-10 player now and has already proven to be able to make it close in matches against Fed.
I expect a 5-setter, could go anyway, the weather will be a decisive factor. May the best one win.

It's too bad that these two have to meet so early. :(

Not a bad call. Thanks for the vCash, Sod! :yeah:

Roger could have played a bit better but of course this had everything to do with the fantastic performance from Soderling. Roger didn't had a thing on him, he was always on the backfoot.
People want Soderling RG2009 vs Nadal version, they got him right now.

Although I do think if Federer made that setpoint in the 3rd he would have won in 4 but nevertheless awesome display by Soderling.
Hope he doesn't crash out next round although Berdych is playing huge too.

Amazing performance from Robin. I didn't give him any credit and didn't think he could win today, but he just stepped it up after the first set and being down a break point in the second. The mental strength and confidence he showed is truly admirable.

These conditions help Robin so much because his lack of speed isn't as exposed, and he can hit through the court so easily. His power is a match for anyone on any surface.

As for Roger, he had the chances in set 3 and 4, but he didn't take advantage. He came off the rain break playing flat and Robin took advantage. Roger's backhand, he's going to have to do something with that shot, it's really weak now, and his movement was also quite poor today. All good things come to an end, 23 SFs in a row is an amazing achievement that will never be unmatched. This loss aside, Roger is still the greatest champion of our era.

Congrats, Robin and his supporters. He definitely has earned the SoderKING label, now.

Soderling played a tremendous match from the second set onwards, as he needed to after going down 6-3 in the first. I'm prepared to say this was his best and most consistent performance that he has put in on a tennis court and I wish him well. If he holds onto this level he can beat the on-form Berdych and even Nadal.

And although Federer's loss brings his semifinal streak to an end and puts his no. 1 record chase in serious jeapordy, he can be immensely proud of what he's done on the tennis court for the last 7 years. I hope he just takes it on the chin like he did after the loss to Djokovic at the AO semifinal in 2008 and bounce back for the grass season.

Beautiful tennis from Soderling, flawless.
But really, it was about time to put this all serve Federer aside, especially on clay.

All serve? Quite the opposite. His serve is (and has been) extremely patchy. That game where he got broken back to 15 was indicative of how rotten it can be in important moments.

Federer's poor play was exposed by Soderling who played extremely well.

I also have weird and stubborn feeling that Soda may win today. We all know about 12-0 H2H and that Söderling is admiring his hero too much, but still this feeling wont go away. It was almost same thing yesterday, took Melzer - Henin double and right after Melzer won, I just KNEW that Justine is going out.Hedged the fucking bet after 1st set because of it, even though Henin won that 1st set very comfortably.
Thats why I didnt want to back Fed 3-1 , which would be my "normal" pick, but settled with 4 sets bet .

Soda - Rafa final would be great.:D

I posted this in the morning in gamblers lounge.

Sometimes these " feelings" are right. Thank God we escaped another stupid "Rafa beats Fed easily" RG final and get something else . Hopefully "Soda wins his 1st RG title final". And thanks ,Robin, for some real cash :)

Roger is definitely not the mental giant he used to be. He went away after having chances early in the second, coming back from the rain delay and then being up in the 4th, then after the rain delay in the 4th he still wasn't where he needed to be. He was flat and he can't just turn it on whenever he feels he needs to, someone is going to take him out while he is down, and Robin did just that.

The different between Fed in the past and Fed today is that he now can't deal the ball basher when they are ON. Murray is not a ball basher, in that match at AO , he played tacticaly and waited errors from Fed , but Fed had time to play well. In this match today and the match against Del Potro at Roland Garros & US Open, he didn't have time to hit the ball. Fed was totally outplayed today, but in the past when he faced these kind of players, he could play defensively by moving incredible well and hit a ton of great passing shot

Really vs. Del Potro in US Open, but that match is an example too. Roger doesn't handle high level ball-bashers nearly as well as just 2-3 years ago. Gulbis, Fish, Berdych, Robin, Del Potro, Blake at the Olympics, he dominated these types before. Not even Roger can stop a natural decline in level.

Melzer has a chance at Djokovic and Almagro certainly does. Woo could be one of the most exciting GS semis and finals for awhile.

Is Söderling now 1st player in history, who beat last years champions , who happened to be # 1 players also, two years in the row ?
2009 he beat 2008 champ and world#1 Nadal
2010 he beat 2008 champ and world#1 Federer

you mean 2009 champ surely...

This is right :yeah: Federer has such a good H2H against Blake, Del Potro, Soderling, Berdych, etc is because he used to have the best defense in the game. He could both outhit and outlast the ballbashers, even at their best (see Blake-Fed EOY championship) in his prime. Now his defense has gotten much worse while his offense is still pretty good, which allows him to beat defensive players like Murray and the new Djokovic. It's ironically the opposite of 2008 when he couldn't beat Simon and Murray because his offense was awful.

The solution is maybe we'll see the old SV Federer return ;)

Soderling playing the way he did today is the consistently hardest and best hitter of the ball in tennis.

This.

Absolutely blazing stuff from Soderling.

A streak coming to an end shows how impressive it was in the 1st place. So many times Fed almost lost in an early round, it couldn't last forever. Great it was Soda playing a great match rather than Tipsarevic playing a crappy Fed, or Haas playing a choking Fed, or Davydenko playing Federror, or the countless other times Fed held on to the streak past his peak. Roger :worship:Apparently, the choker was the opponent and you had amnesia. Yawn...

LOL, boy that karma sure is a mighty bitch. Sodajerk ends Federer's SF streak, his number one rank, wow. It'll be fun watching the Fedtards crush themselves to death in effort to rush off the Toad bandwagon they jumped on so enthusiastically last year.

Roger stuck with the dreaded asterisk * on his French Open trophy for the rest of his life now. :awww:

French crowd. http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/5041/wavefinger.gif (http://img9.imageshack.us/i/wavefinger.gif/)

Lol at the asterisk remark. He won fair and square. We could start putting asterisks next to almost any Slam if we looked at them critically.

I think the French crowd appreciate the fact that they have such an effect on you . They gave Robin a nice cheer after the match, nothing wrong with a crowd having a favorite.

Sod basically went to Godmode after the long rain delay, there just isn't any defense for that sort of hitting. Federer has never met this version of Soderling before, evern if there were things he could've done better too. Anyways Robin has taken baby steps against Fed in their GS meetings after last RG final. Wimby was very tight, USO was a point away from 5th set, then the exhibition win, and now a real win, at RG no less.

GJ Robin! :)

Really vs. Del Potro in US Open, but that match is an example too. Roger doesn't handle high level ball-bashers nearly as well as just 2-3 years ago. Gulbis, Fish, Berdych, Robin, Del Potro, he dominated these types before. Not even Roger can stop a natural decline in level.

In that match had 40 % of first serve and in both breakers had a chance to made a winning shots . It was more like mentality loss . Today similar as against Fish with decent percentage of first serve he even hasn't had a chance to make an attacking shot . totally desperate

I think his defense was pretty good today. Maybe if he stayed a little further back he'd have more chances. Soderling is just a better player now than he was before, and he is way better than Blake.

Completely agree. His deteriorating passing shots are the most noteworthy indication of his decline.

Great performance from Soderling and a huge :hatoff: to Magnus as well.

The semifinal streak had to end at some point, that is a record that it will be tough to break. There is a symmetry of facts here, Soderling knocks out the defending champ and World #1 for the 2nd year in a row and Roger losing before the semis at the same slam he really started the streak (RG 2004).

Much like the match vs. JMDP at the USO last year, Fed should have used an offensive slice more often on the backhand. Keep it low.

Instead he tries to come over the backhand every time and they got thwacked.

he was never getting the upper hand in the rallies. It was only his serve that kept him close in the last 2 sets

Nadal hasn't impressed me at all.

I saw the Almagro match against Verdasco and thought that if he played like that again, Nadal would lose, so nothing to do with Federer losing. I actually did think Almagro had a higher chance of beating Nadal than Soderling, Federer since Federer looked like he was playing better than Nadal and Soderling lost a set to Montanes.

What a match and what a performance. Once of the most impressive displays of hitting I've ever seen on a tennis court in a 3 of 5 match. Federer played the containing game very well as always, have to give him credit for making it a very good match. Soderling was just so good for so long and deservedly broke the defences. Class win and a great day for the Toad, far from a one match wonder and now favourite to go for back to back RG finals. :yeah:

What is GOAT?

berdych would not beat federer, and nadal will not lose to almagro in a million years.

also soderling is more difficult to nadal than it would've been federer.

Berdych beat Federer this year already and the way he's played the whole tournament, he definitely could've beaten Federer if Soderling didn't.

I'm saying Almagro has a very good chance because Rafa hasn't played as well as when he first started the clay season.

He's been unimpressive throughout the tournament whilst Almagro absolutely crushed Verdasco from every area of the court, not just the baseline.

Nadal is better than Almagro and Nico does not have any answers to Nadal's game. None whatsoever. Nadal at 75% of his best level beat Almagro in Madrid, same thing will happen here, except Nadal will be at 100%.

Rafa is still the overwhelming favorite to win the title. He is now, tomorrow, and until the final.

"The title is Robin's to lose"

Classic overreaction. Congrats to your man winning, but don't get ahead of yourself.I'm not. If Robin plays anything close to this level in his remaining matches, I don't see anyone left that can beat him. Do you? Remember that Nadal's game fits Robin much better than Roger's. And Berdych is great but today Robin played sensationally good.
Well... we have some interesting match-ups ahead of us.

It is his to lose. No other player has been as been as impressive as Soderling. Berdych hasn't dropped a set yet, but that doesn't mean that he has been playing better.
