Incredibly pathetic effort today by Ferrer, Good job Jurgen though, I will give credit when it's due.

But any player on there preferred surface, I've never seen anything as lazy or as disgraceful as that.

Should be the upset of RG '10.

Amazing display from Melzer today. Congrats Jurgen. :clap2:

I think he may be the biggest hope for Nadalhaters/Fedtards now. If he kept playing like this and Nadal doesn't improve Rafa is in a big ******.

Lazy effort from Ferrer. Can't think of much more then that.

For a player on there preferred surface i haven't seen a worse performance for a very long time.

Credit to Melzer though.

Thoroughly deserved, Melzer was simply superb. 68% first serve, 80% points won off it - do that against Ferrer on clay and you know you've served well.

ApproachShot
05-29-2010, 01:36 PM
Melzer was just too strong - especially on the forehand side, pushing Ferrer far behind the baseline. Some excellent serving and defence as well.

What happened with Ferrer today? Lack of concentration, his clay court scheduling finally getting the better of him or just being plainly unfortunate in coming up against an in form player on the day?

Roddick lost to Gabashvili in straights. Not sure why it's assumed he'd take out Melzer.

Congrats to Melzer, I've always thought he's a dangerous player.
He's 29, I'm a bit astonished to the fact that it's his debut to R16 at a slam and that he hasn't been ranked even higher.

Ferrer was fighting from what I saw of the last set but he didn't have the answers today.

Not really, I don't see what's good about a ton of mental midgets going deep into a slam. Maybe if you like some WTA style choking.....

The interesting thing about Melzer for me is he's pretty much cast off said mental midgetry lately - Almagro, Gulbis and Berdy seem to be the same, perhaps Kohly too.

A number of these guys have talked about new mental approaches btw, so maybe just one of those cyclical things. Perhaps these guys saw and were inspired by Sod and Verdasco's breakthroughs last year.

What a fantastic result for Melzer! I didn't see the match but I assume he indeed played great. :hatoff:

What's going on with Pics? Because this isn't a scoreline you'd expect from him. Just lazy, too much partying in Paris, or might he have peaked too early in this year's clay season? :o

You'd rather have Robredos of this world making it deep? That would be gripping, but no thanks, I'd rather watch talented headcases. Even if they have a meltdown, there will be some spectacular stuff in between. Mediocrity is far worse and it's actually far more certain there won't be an upset once they encounter someone above their level.

No he isn't, especially this year. Have you seen his clay performances this year? How in the hell is he overrated, this year especially. After Nadal he is clearly (some would argue it's Verdasco) the best clay court player this year.

How can you say that when Federer beat him and is the defending champ at RG? I mean it's one thing to be a fan. But to say Ferrer > Federer on clay is nonsense.

David is done for this year, IMO. Might get some results after Wimbledon on clay, and that's about it. He's just totally done. He had nothing to bring to the table today.

Melzer did well to take advantage of the opportunity and play the exactly correct aggressive game vs. David. I'm happy for him that he's finally making his breakthrough late in his career. He's become much smarter on court than he has been in previous seasons.

What a performance from Jurgi, surprised there was no classic meltdown of his.
Now please don't screw it up against Gabashvili - this is a golden chance to reach quarterfinals, you cannot get easier 4th round opponent in your wildest dreams.

He could sustain his level the whole match even in the tieabreak, with his ups and downs and Ferrer's fighting spirit this could well have been another frustration.
