Who would you consider "The King Of Grass"...

Rogie or Sampras?

Sampras: 10 career grass titles (1 Manchester, 2 Queen's Club, and 7 Wimbledons), tied with Rogie for most career Wimbledon finals with 7, 101-20 career record on grass.

Rogie: Record of 11 career grass titles (5 Halle and 6 Wimbledons), tied with Sampras for most career Wimbledon finals with 7, has the record for most consecutive Wimbledon finals with 7 (2003-2009), from 2003-2008 won a record 65 straight matches on grass until losing to Rafa in the 2008 Wimbledon F, 72-1 (98.6%) on grass from 2003-2009 (only 16-11 from 1999-2002), and a career record of 88-12 on grass. Needs to do better than 13-8 to surpass Sampras overall on grass, just another 14 wins to have 102 career wins on grass.

I think Rogie's the greatest ever on grass, but it's still left to be determined if Rafa's the best ever on clay because of Bjorn Borg and Guillermo Vilas. However, when it's said and done, Rogie will be "The King Of Grass" and Rafa will be "The King Of Clay". You can say Rafa's feats are harder because with more matches to play there are more chances to lose, but for Rogie there's only about 4-5 weeks per year of grass tournaments, so he gets such few chances to play grass every year, so his feat is amazing too.

Lastly, on a side note: If Rogie wins 1 more AO, 2 more W, and 1 more USO, he'll have the most of 3 of the 4 grand slams in the open era. To me that's an amazing feat. (Tied with Agassi with 4 AO, one behind Sampras with 6 W, and tied with Sampras and Connors with 5 USO). As for FO, Rafa and Borg will top that list, Borg has 6 and Rafa currently has 4.

I do agree, I think Rogie's ownage of grass courts is truly amazing, in some ways more amazing than Rafa's because there's hardly any grass season played, about a month, and no Masters Series events at all on grass unfortunately.

Wtf does this have to do with grass dominance?

Maybe, but Rogie has 5 USOs and 4 AOs as well, so he can handle any surface fast or slow.

So if it was fast grass, Roger wouldnt win those titles?
I dont think so, his serve is the best so he would still win them.

Sampras & Federer are scarcely the only 2 candidates. They're clearly better than Borg, Mac, Becker, Edberg, Connors et al, but Laver & Gonzales both have a good claim.

No doubt that Federer is basically just as dominant as Sampras on the surface, no matter how different the surface or rackets may be now.

But i'll probably always think of Sampras as the "king of grass"...if I have to resort to that type of thinking. He played in era where many players were skilled on grass and still dominated them. It's unfortunate that so few players are good on grass anymore....even with the slower, bouncier grass of today.

Why does Laver have a good claim as opposed to Borg?

Why does Laver have a good claim as opposed to Borg?

Just because he won more majors on grass & more grass-court tournaments overall.

Federer has a more complete game on grass. Sampras is relied heavily on a serve/volley style to ensure victory. Whereas Roger is comfortable at either the Baseline or at the Net, Sampras wasn't always solid from the Baseline (even though his running forehand was magnificent).

That's a little hard to compare based off this criterion, there were significantly more relevant grass court tournaments in Laver's day than Borg's.

That is perfectly true. I suppose it's just we CAN compare Borg with Federer & Sampras & put him a small but significant way behind. We can't do that with Laver.

For me Fed needs one more Wimbledon.
Fed is the better player but Sampras is still King for me because 7 > 6

Sampras is (still) the King of Grass because of his 7 Wimble-titles. The 5 Halle titles of Federer are irrelevant.

Sampras fans trying to cling to any hope they still have of saying he's better than Federer in anything.

Fed will get 1-2 more Wimbledons before he calls it quits.

He's very close.

He wins this year, he'll have it.

Most number of wimbledon titles, tied with Sampras.

8 straight wimbledon finals.

Longest match winning streak on Grass.

Most grass tournaments won.

Depends on the grass:)

To me.. I will always separate pre 2002 grass and post 2002 grass.. Its night and day anymore.. Sampras will always be king of old.. Fed is king of new.. Then.. Im sure there will be another king.

Wimbledon now isn't nearly wimbledon of old.. Its changed way too much to crown just ONE king
