Tennis: Unfit Nadal withdraws from Barcelona Open

BARCELONA, Spain: Rafael Nadal, fresh from his latest re-write of the record books with a sixth straight title in Monte Carlo, will not make it six in a row at this week's Barcelona Open after he said on Monday he is not physically ready to play.

A statement from the player's camp said he will explain his reasons Tuesday in a media conference.

"I feel bad not playing in Barcelona, more than any another tournament," read the statement from the world number three.

"But after winning in Monte Carlo my body is asking me to rest.

"I feel really bad about this, it is my club and my event," said the winner of the last five editions.

"I've mentioned several times that the clay season calendar is poorly structured, he added.

"I want to thank members and fans in advance for their understanding," Nadal concluded.

The most important is that Rafa comes back healthy, I was planning on seeing him in Barcelona(I got tickets) yet again but I prefer to see him at Roland Garros later on.

Yeah its a bummer but I live here(Barcelona) and he will come back. This year I will be at Roland Garros so hopefully Rafa will make it far and I will take pictures for all of you.

Don't you think squashing everyone 1 and 2 makes him feel confident?

I mean he needed to know whether he is able to win close matches (see close SF losses in Indian Wells and Miami)

All credits to Gulbis, he played very good and that's my point - winning close match again - as he used to do it in the past

Squashing is good as well but Rafa has to be sure he is there in the final set and he is there to take the final prize :wavey:

I don't believe this. He knows what he can do

of course he knows what generally speaking he can do but that's the point - he needs to know if he is there on court with his very best game in the most important moments...

It looks like you don't know Rafa so well

He has to feel he can rely on his game in the most important moments

“I think I played worse than I played in the last few days. Gulbis’ serve was unbelievable. I had a break in the first game of the match and then I got another one in the last game but all the time he was serving at 200, 210, 215 km/h – very difficult to return. In the second set I played bad and probably I played better in the first. In the end I won the match but it was difficult in the third set and he was playing well from the baseline. I was happy that I won the first set because that gave me much more confidence to win the third set.”

The victory seemed to give Nadal a real sense of satisfaction, with fists pumped, knees bent and lungs filled as he roared his delight and relief at the end of the match. Was he pleased that his reputation on clay was still intact? “I was happy because when I go on court I don't think about invincibility or these things - you think much more about these things than me – I was happy because I'm in the final of one of the most important tournament in the world and winning a very hard match. For some moments I had problems and I had some chances also. Perhaps I had more chances than he did but it was a difficult match. I wasn't thinking about losing on clay. It was a good match and a difficult opponent and it was a lot of points for me, and I'm going to try to win one of my favourite tournament in the world.”

“You cannot play very well every day,” he continued. “I have been doing so for a lot of matches and today was the first day that I didn't play very well. It is impossible to play at this level every day and the important thing is that today, I had a difficult match also mentally and so I stayed focused from the first set. It wasn't easy to play against Ernests because he plays so aggressive, and the thing is that I put too much pressure on myself with the serve and so I started to play more defensively and stayed a good two or three metres behind the baseline. This is dangerous against a player like him who can pack a lot of power in the ball and you are in his hands. That is what happened for a long time during the match and I'm going to have to be much better tomorrow if I want to win.”

star
05-01-2010, 11:28 PM
Ferrer: “I think this is normal because in Spain , Nadal is the best player and they talk about him and not about the other players. It's not important for me, I do my job, I play tennis and I have my fans and I understand this,” said a very calm Ferrer. “I think he is the best player on clay court. I'll try and do my best and I will need to play very aggressively against him. I have not a very good serve and I don't have a lot of power and so it is important for me to be physically fit and to run around.”

GM thread is exploding over this. Meh...the way I see it, Gulbis is an awesome player, who runs hot and cold. Talent is there, brain not always. The Federer match was very revealing. The old Fed would have pulled that match out. Gulbis faltered mentally in the third, he offered the break back and many chances to be broken to Fed. Fed was not mentally tough enough to hold serve and go for it, plain and simple. The old Fed, of 2007, 2008 would have done that.

Now, Rafa and his team noticed this, you can bet on it. It was important to win the first set, break Gulbis when it would be easiest, in the beginning. Rafa blew it in the second, as he would say, played a bad game to go down an early break. That wrapped up the set for Gulbis. But you know he was thinking, he had to serve first the third set, and concentrate on holding. Because at some point, Gulbis would crack. I noticed it at the game Rafa served to go up 3-2. Gulbis finally began swinging and missing. He lost that game due to UEs. So Rafa struck and had triple break point. But Gulbis called on the experience he had against Fed and managed to save them. But he was still swinging wildly and had lost his touch. The drops shots became too heavy and the forehand too wild. You can bet Rafa noticed this. He really pressured Gulbis, who began missing first serves finally, and conceded that last game rather meekly. Rafa was smart enough to know he had nothing to do but concentrate on holding his own serve.

This was an excellent victory. Gulbis hits a powerful serve and powerful low groundies on clay like Soderling. The Rafa of last year would have lost this match, but this year, his fitness and mental toughness and confidence are back, that is the difference.

Ferrer has a different style than Gulbis. He played Rafa tough last year, but this year on clay, it's a different story. I can't see Ferrer winning his first finals appearance at a Masters against THIS year's Rafa.

I wonder if Rafa will play Madrid. Three weeks is a long time to take off before a major.

gorgo1986
05-02-2010, 02:09 PM
IMO Rafa should play Madrid, he knows his own body and he knows what happened last year. If he feels good, healthy than why not.

As for yesterday, Rafa had an off day it happens to everyone and Gulbis is a really talented guy with a great future, you can't expect Rafa to play his best all the time. Some days your game is just off, there is no reason for anyone to overreact. The important thing is that Rafa found a way to win.

SMILING NADAL SAVOURS HISTORIC MOMENT
'The thing is to maintain high motivation to keep winning'
Spraying the ball-kids with champagne, speaking Italian at the ceremony and laughing all the way through-Rafael Nadal had won the title and he was going to enjoy it!

The joy he radiated came in stark contrast to the broody figure he cut before the tournament began, when despite coming off an incredible tournament in Monte Carlo, he seemed as if he had the weight of the world on his shoulders.

“When you have some bad moments and every week you are trying to be there and try to win…” said Nadal, before going through a litany of missed opportunities between May 2009 and April 2010 when he failed to win a tournament. “The semi-finals in Miami, the finals in Doha, in Australia the quarter-finals…… last year I played badly for the last six months of 2009 and so lots of times I was there but I wasn't ready to win important matches. But I was there – so when you lose the semi-finals or the finals it’s hard to accept, but at the same time, I worked a lot and started working towards the next tournaments. So, it's a nice moment now and I'm winning – after 11 months of not winning a title.”

Much of the Majorcan’s lack of success for that period was down to injuries, particularly with his knees, but here in Rome he was feeling 100% fit, even as the clay got heavier after the two rain breaks which interrupted the final. “I didn't have any problems with my knees the whole week which is unbelievable for me, for the last two tournaments, and so that is very important for me. But now is not the moment to talk about my knees. The important thing is that I've won a very important tournament and I’m very happy. Probably I didn't play as well as Monte Carlo, but the important thing is winning. Winning a tournament like Monte Carlo and losing 14 games doesn't happen every week. Can you remember lots of Master 1000 tournaments where (the winner lost) that many games? I can't. I lost one set and had a very difficult match yesterday (against Ernests Gulbis in the semi-final), a very difficult set against Wawrinka and a difficult first set (today). I am probably more happy winning without playing my best because it's more a mental thing.”

Talk, as always, turned to his seeming invincibility on clay and his amazing consistency, but again Nadal was both humble and realistic. “I've had a lot of bad days in the past five or six years. The thing is to maintain high motivation to keep winning. The important thing is to have enough motivation to want to improve all the time - this is the main thing for me, all of my career and all of my life and it's something that I'm still doing. For about eight months or longer I didn’t win a tournament and then I won some in the past two months. Every time I go on court I try my best and I try to do this all the time.”

And with that, he smiled. And when a supremely gifted player is finally fit enough to “try his best all the time” and explore the limits of his enormous potential, then tennis fans the world over can afford to smile as well.

I will tell you now about my vacation but I will post pictures probably tomorrow or during the weekend.

I arrived in Rome late on Tuesday. Our hotel was 1 min walk from Termini station and it proved to be very convenient.

On Wednesday we visited the Coliseum, The Palatine Hill, Roman Forum and most of the interesting sites around. I don't want to be very descriptive in that part in order to concentrate on the tennis day. See below.

On Thursday we took the Archiobus which drove us around the most of the archeological sightseeing place. We even visited the Catacombs of Calisto. Late in the evening while trying to make night pictures of the Coliseum I had a bad moment. While exiting the metro station I didn't notice there was one more step and I fell straight on my right ankle. I sprained it pretty badly. Eventually it was nothing to worry about but the following few days I had to be extra careful.

So here it comes the magic Friday. My tennis day. The quarterfinals. I had bought my tickets via internet in advance so it was pretty easy to enter the tournament site, no queues or whatsoever. The tennis complex was really nice with a scent of Rome. There were white statues all over the place. It was really unique. I noticed there were way too many beach tennis courts and the girls and boys there were playing pretty seriously. There were even commentators. :)

Before the matches started I caught Rafa's practice with an unknown player on court number one. Rafa was really creaming the ball but at the same time he had very uncharacteristic mistakes.

The first match I watched was probably the best one I've seen live. Djokovic - Verdasco. What a match, hah? Verdasco was on fire and Djokovic was defending like there was no tomorrow. In the middle of the match I left to see Rogi playing doubles on the other center court with Allegro against Querrey and Isner. They were hammered pretty badly. Rogi tried really but it seemed Allegro was not good enough. Allegro made two consecutive double faults and that cost them the second set.

I watched on the outside courts women's qualies later as well. Got some rest from the sun and returned to watch the next men's match. Ferrer Tsongs. Tsonga was at his usual error-prone game. Didn't impress me at all. Ferrer was kicking his a$$ beautifully. :)

Finally Rafa's match came. I know Wawrinka is a great clay court player. The first set was really close. Wawrinka was outplaying Rafa from the back of the court until 4:4. He had some beautiful backhand winners. But then Rafa shifted a gear or two up and swept the court with him. I was pretty content with Rafa's game. The atmosphere was great. Some nice music and some nice "Grande, Rafa" from the crowd. :P Heard "Gypsy" song again and again.

There were as well nice camera moments in the breaks. The cameras caught a women in her 50s kissing and licking passionately her husband. It took a while after the huge whistles from the crowd to realize she had been on the giant screen. It was really awkward but very funny to the audience. :D

I had a night ticket as well so I started watching Gulbis - Lopez. Feli played really well, had a set point but in the end Gulbis prevailed. I decided it was enough for me. It was too much tennis for me and my head was already hurting. That was my tennis QF day.

The next days I spent sightseeing and will tell you about it tomorrow. It will even be probably more interesting.

Good that the ankle didn't cause you too much worry.
Verdasco vs Nole was really a good match and Rafaaaaaaaaaaa! :bounce: :bigclap: :yippee:
And I guess we're going to listen to the Gypsy during changeovers ad nauseum until Rafa makes a new video. :tape: :spit: :o
So you liked the new Campo Centrale? I've been to Foro Italico once but not during the tournament. :( It was really beautiful back then.

Yeap, I like a lot the new center court. It looks quite modern. But I don't like that it is quite steep and if you don't watch your steps you can easily fall badly. It didn't help my ankle. I had to be really careful.

On Saturday me and my friend tried a trip to Mount Vesuvius. We took the train to Naples (2h) and then the train from Naples to Pompei (40m). We immediatelly took a taxi to the volcano and had around 1 hour to visit the crater and take pictures. It was really nice. You can see Naples, Capri Island and the sea from the top. Some of the ash in the volcano's crater strangely was smoking a bit.

On the way back we took a tour around the remnants of Pompei town which had been hit and buried by the Vesuvius lava many years ago. Great experience. We had some time left so before taking the train back to Rome we wandered around Naples train station. There were some nice mini skyscrapers.

Sunday was the Pope day. At least we thought so. :( See below. We went to the Vatican and queued for the St. Pietro Cathedral. We went at the very top and took some nice pictures of Rome from above. The Vatican gardens are really looking fresh and green. Then we waited for the 12 o'clock Pope service. Lots of people gathered at the square. The Polish contingent was huge. Some dances and songs. And to our suprise a liitle after it started (it was broadcast at the giant screens at the square) we understood that the Pope was in another city... Pity. During the afternoon I went to the Giancolo hill and later visited the St. Angelo Castle.

On Monday we queued for the Vatican museums 3 hours. I am not much into museums but it was worth it. I like it all. Pictures, sculptures and other pieces of art. Visited the Sistine Capella as well. The day ended in Parco Savelo - a nice, solitary park with orange trees. Took a lot of night pictures of Rome.

The thing that impressed me a lot is that there are drinking fountains literally at every corner in Rome. You will never be thirsty for a long time there.

That's about the summary of my trip. Later I will post some Rafa pictures as promised. :)
