There has been a tournament where the winner only lost 10 games, the fact Borg's win at 78 RG was more impressive than this and he played 7 matches. Not that Nadal thumping these players isn't impressive, you just need some perspective.

It didn't exactly take a genius to work out that the moment he hit clay, his form would improve drastically. It's not as though he was playing badly on hardcourts this year, he just suffered a few close losses in matches which were never going to be close on clay.

Yeah, but these have not been master series tournaments. Borg 78 lost 32 games in 21 sets, Nadal lost 14 games in 12 sets. So mathematicaly Nadal's performance was more dominating than Borg's 78.

No it's not unreal. It's Verdasco at his finest. After good points he makes stupid UEs, he tanks games when he's on a bad patch.
Any other top 10 player who would have had Verdascol's level of play today, but with a head to go along, would have only lost something like 3-6 4-6.

This is the best version of Nadal we've seen in a long time, he completely deserved to win this tournament and the way he did it. :worship:
The prove that Rafa needed this victory like water in the desert were his tears at the end of the match. A match he won 6-0, 6-1.
Poor Verdasco, he was visibly tense and nervous throughout all the match, it was his first final after all. He deserved better than a bagel though, but Nadal never forgives. Nando was humiliated and it was painful to see. He played a fantastic week here in Montecarlo and maybe he deserved a little bit better. Despite him beating Novak the way he did yesterday, I'm sure Novak would have been a bigger threat today against Rafa.

Some statistics can be found here but it only covers Slam tournies up to maybe 2006 or so.

http://www.tennis28.com/slams/games_winpct_tournament.html

I seem to recall when doing my own math that Nadal's RG 2008 was good enough for second on that list.

Well somebody can do the math for this tournie and figure out the percentage of games won. I don't know how it compares to other dominant non slam tournie victories.

EDIT: Mathematically this tournament victory was more impressive than Nadal's own RG 2008 win or Borg's 1978 win, as Nadal won 81% of the games he played in.

Rafael Nadal was playing some amazing tennis(the best I have seen him play in a long long time). The match was a lot closer at times than the score suggests. Nadal would have destroyed everyone today whether it was Federer, Del Potro, Nole, or whoever. Verdasco had a great week(back in the top ten where he belongs), he was a bit nervous in the final(its his first Masters Final) and did not capitalize the few opportunities he had. Still a great week by both and it was great seeing that despite everything both of them are great friends. I love them both. Congrats! Viva Espańa!!!

Jesus, let's wait before he gets tested. That's like shouting "Fed is back!" after he won Halle in 08.

On the other hand, I'm beyond happy for the guy to win something, he deserved it 200% after all those SF/ Finals disappointments. I want him to come back and this seems like a good start.

The thing is that I don't even think Verdasco played much worse than yesterday. He made some great shots and kept fighting. He just threw the first game but after he tried. Nadal was really fantastic.

Good to see some classic reactions in this thread. Some are very impressed with Nadal's play this week as they should be, there are some who have been waiting for these 2 months of the year where Nadal fans can gloat about his high skill level on clay.

Then there are others even if Nadal lost 1 game for the whole tourney, it still wouldn't be good enough and if he loses a match during clay then there will be the knees weren't right.

Exactly. Were people really expecting Nadal to lose at this tournament? He didn't face a single top ten player all week. All this talk of "he's back!!!" is ridiculous. On clay, he never really went anywhere.

Yes, like Amber Spyglass, I like Rafa a lot as well. Wish some people weren't so defensive around here, ffs.

It's just a fact that it's boring when a single person wins every tournament on a given surface, regardless who they are.

I can predict the whole clay/grass seasons, and if you're a fan of *competitive* tennis, that's not fun. If you're a glory hunter, it is.

I am in Monte Carlo and have seen it live inside the centre court. Nadal was not as good as you think it was Verdasco who was horrible. I watched all the matches on centre court and Rafa did not face not even for 5 minutes all tournament descent resistance.
Verdasco didn't believe he could win. He kept looking at his father and coach telling them "What more can i do" when he made 20 unforced errors and 3 winners. On the other hand Nadal was super consistent, putting the ball in play most of the time and many times so short that Nando had to attack but didn't. He was scared shitless. Awfull perfomance by Verdasco. Good for Nadal but not super good since he didn't need to do anything special. All his opponents where running for diapers as soon as their matches began.

OK but then who is to be blamed - the one who is winning everything or those who are not providing enough competition? Is Nadal to be blamed Novak chickened out of the final in MC and denied us a competitive match today? Is Nadal to be blamed he's far superiior on clay than the other competitors? Is he to drop his level so others could catch up?

Nadal is just too good. This man will surely be the greatest clay courter of all time when everything is said and done. At people slamming Verdasco, he can do only so much. No point blaming him for it, Nadal was just a brick wall on the other side with viscous top spin. Very few and I mean just a handfule can handle Nadal on clay (and that doesn't even mean these handful can defeat him, it just means they can put up some sort of fight to make the defeat look some what reasonable).

Verdasco didn't play terribly at all today. Tactic-wise he had the right idea and there were plenty of entertaing points, but Nadal was just far too good. The scary thing is that he has clearly has a couple of higher gears to shift into if needed.
Once again this year a lot of people read far too much into his hard court performances ahead of his clay court compaign (like they did in 2007 and 2008). He is totally different animal with the red dirt under his feet. Even then despite not winning a title last year's Master Cup aside, he had been very consistent in his hard court events since his return from injury at Montreal last year.

I admit that Rafa has a good form if he will destroy a non-Spaniard and non-Challenger player, for example Soderling in Barcelona.
Then we can talk about his Roland Garros recapture.

You can quote my words.

Oh yeah, for example Soderling. No worries. He'll beat Soderling in Barcelona. Let's remember that last year at RG Rafa was injured physically and emotionally from the sad turn his private life took and Soderling played well enough to beat an already beaten down Rafa. No such luck this year for Soderling. I'm just waiting to see that pairing.....if Soderling makes it that far.

I'm pretty sure you don't need to worry about the clay season being "boring" with the best player being too good for everyone, every tournament. Rafa's knees aren't 100%, there's already talk about him w/d from Barcelona (but I bet he doesn't), and the more he plays the less likely it is he'll arrive at RG in any state to win it.

As for "boring", I've always been surprised that many people said that Fed's domination was "boring" while you always knew that he could be beaten, whereas for Nadal on clay it's very different : see the stats here

Rafa's presser:

RAFAEL NADAL SUNDAY PRESS CONFERENCE
Monte-Carlo, Monaco
by ATP Staff | 18.04.2010
R. NADAL/F. Verdasco
60, 61

An interview with: RAFAEL NADAL

THE MODERATOR: Questions for Rafael.

Q. First title in nearly one year. How big a relief is it?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, yeah, is a title since almost a year. Well, important thing is I told you during all the week, no, important thing is play well. I was playing really well since the start of 2010 season. I didn't win a tournament yet. I won this week, not before. But I was ready to win before this tournament, no?
I told you, I was relaxed. When I watch me play well in Doha, in Australia, in Indian Wells, in Miami, when you play like this, you know you're going to have your chance soon.
I had two chances, two important chances, in Indian Wells and Miami. I didn't convert. But the third one, yes, here in Monte Carlo.
Sure for me is very emotional. Is probably my favorite tournament. I love this tournament. Win here another time is a dream for me.

Q. You looked a little nervous when you had to serve at 4 1 in the second set. Were you nervous?
RAFAEL NADAL: I was, yeah. I was nervous. Little bit, yeah.
Yeah, win Monte Carlo, every time when I have the chance to win Monte Carlo, is very important tournament for me. I was a little bit nervous, no? I didn't win a tournament for a while, and I saw the chance. My feeling is I was playing really well, so you are a little bit more nervous than usual. But is normal.

Q. You said last year you did not play well. This year you've lost only 14 games in the whole tournament. What does that mean for you? There is such a huge difference between you and all the others, or not, when you play at your best?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, I told you last year I didn't play well. That's true. But I still winning, no?
This year, the level is completely different. But that doesn't mean that I gonna win easy. I think that the results, the scores this week, was too much. I think that's not real. But I was playing really good. I was very focused in all points.
When you didn't win for a while, you are playing really well, you really want to win, you are focused more than ever, no? So maybe for that reason I won easier than usual.
Sure, that's not normal. Gonna have lots of problems on clay, too, in the future (smiling).

Q. Do you think you're back to your best level now?
RAFAEL NADAL: I back to my best level in January, 1st of January. I win a tournament now. In Abu Dhabi, 1st of January, I was playing my best level.

Q. Can you explain what are the keys to be successful on clay? What do you concentrate on? Is it the movement of the feet? Is it the forehand?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, I think is more important than the surface is the tactic on court. You have more chances. You can attack, you can defend. Is important to be very regular. Is very important don't have a lot of mistakes. No mistakes when you are offensive and no mistakes when you are defensive.
So that's the key, no, and know how to play.

Q. Is this the best final you have played since when you played and beat very easily Federer at Roland Garros, that you really destroyed him?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, the first set this year against Davydenko in Doha was unbelievable. The match was good. I don't remember. Final of Olympics, I played really well, too. And here probably was one of the best level on clay I played this week, one of my best levels on clay, sure.

Q. You say the scores here are a little bit unreal. Who do you expect to be your toughest opponents on this surface?
RAFAEL NADAL: Always are a lot. You know, there is big players, Federer, Djokovic, Murray, Verdasco, David Ferrer, Ferrero. Del Potro going to be there sure. Soderling, Berdych. A lot of opponents. Nalbandian.

Q. Last year you won here, you won in Barcelona, in Rome, final in Madrid. When you arrived in Paris, you were tired and a little hurt. Now that you have won here, could you change your schedule or do you intend to play all the clay court tournaments like last year?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, we will see, no? Right now I just want to enjoy today. The victory is very important. I'm very happy. It's emotional day for me. I don't know yet. We will see.

Q. You looked very emotional on the court. What was going through your mind at that moment?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, it was a lot of work, a lot of work. At the same time, a little bit hard moment for me because after I came back from the injury, the injury time last year in the summer, when I came back, I had the abdominal break. At the end of the season, I did semifinal, I did final, but I didn't feel ready to win. I didn't feel at my level to try to win against the best players and to win important tournaments.
Sure, when you win a tournament, very emotional tournament for me like Monte Carlo, is a dream for me, no? Win sixth time for me is unbelievable. I never expect something like that.

Q. You often talk about the crowd, how much the crowd helps you here. Could you talk about how special the crowd is for you here.
RAFAEL NADAL: The atmosphere here is unbelievable. The views. Is a club. It's very nice to play in a big court, show courts, but when you are in a club, it's like Barcelona, no, the feeling is different, the atmosphere is different.
Here the tradition, you greet something, the history of tennis, no? I love this tournament. One of the reason is this. And, sure, the crowd was always unbelievable with me here. I feel like home. The crowd was supporting me. No one match during seven years I felt the crowd against me. So that's unbelievable.
I just can say thank you very much everybody. The organization, too, was always very nice with me. Everything was very easy for me.

Q. The memory of this tournament is very fresh, of course. But out of the six Monte Carlo tournaments, is there one that sticks more than the others for you? The first because it was the first, or others?
RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know. Every one is really important, no? Every Monte Carlo is special, no?

Q. When you beat Federer, there is more...
RAFAEL NADAL: No. First time, was first Masters Series for me, and first Monte Carlo at the same time was a dream for me, no? Winning Monte Carlo, I always saw Monte Carlo on the TV. So like I win very important thing, no?
After that, the beginning I played against Federer. I didn't expect to win. But I played against the No. 1. I didn't feel favorite, so was emotional to win.
And, for sure this year is really special for me, one of the most special, because I had little bit hard time for the last year. Well, little bit more than a year. To win here is like, I don't know, very emotional for me, very special.

Q. When you play, you know every inch of the court. Everywhere in the world that you play, do you feel you know every inch of that court?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I don't know every inch, no? But, no, when you play a lot of times on the same court, you win a lot of matches on the same court, you feel comfortable, no, and you feel that it's easier to play well than another places.
So, you know, this court is like I am playing in my court. So I love that and I feel very good here all the time.

Nando's presser:

R. NADAL/F. Verdasco
60, 61

An interview with: FERNANDO VERDASCO

THE MODERATOR: Questions for Fernando.

Q. Is Rafael better than ever before?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: I don't know. I think he was pretty good also before than the same like he played today and the same he was playing this week. He was like doing this six years, of course, some moments better than other ones. But if you remember Roland Garros when he beat Federer in three sets really easy, he was also playing unbelievable.

Q. How tough was it out there?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: Yeah, no, well, of course, if you see the score, is a big difference. But in some games I had some chances to be closer, you know, to make him think a little bit more.
But, you know, I think that he had unbelievable day and he played really good. He didn't let me attack him so good, with balls really high and deep.
And then I also didn't have maybe a good day, no, because I was trying to force and making more mistakes than unusual.

Q. Do you think he's back to his best level?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: Well, I think that he played really good during all the week, no? Not only today. I think he played unbelievable.
And on clay, I think last year he lost against Soderling and against Federer because he was like really tired, and also with problems in the knee. If he is not with this, I think he's still the best on clay by far.

Q. What do you think, generally speaking, you have to do to try to beat this guy on clay? What is the tactic?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: Well, I don't know (smiling). You are asking me something that if I know I will do today on the court.

Q. What happened when you called the trainer?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: My neck got stuck in the third game of the match.

Q. He was already giving you a headache?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: No, no, nothing with headache.

Q. Did you feel you became a little nervous towards the end of the match?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: No, I was feeling okay. I was feeling the same like yesterday. Yesterday and today, it was my first semifinal, my first final. It was like all the normal nervous that you have when you have important match. Nothing special, I think, out of normal.

Q. You had lost to him very badly also in Roland Garros. Has it changed anything from there? Is it exactly more or less the same difference?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: Every match is different. From Roland Garros to here, pass many times, many matches together. You know, every match is different.

Q. But you are a much stronger player now than you were probably two years ago. How do you explain the score was still so bad?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: Always not the score is the reflection of the game.

Q. What do you think you needed to do a little bit better today to make it a real contest and have a chance to maybe get some doubt in his head?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: I think if he plays like he play today, not only with me, I think if he plays like this, nobody can beat him.
So I cannot say something that you guys doesn't know. I think that he was beating everyone during six years here, and I'm one more of all these. I cannot tell you something new, no?
I think that if he plays like this, nobody can beat him. What do you want me to tell you?

Q. Only on clay or all surfaces?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: Well, on clay for sure is the biggest difference. Hard court, more players beat him, you know, in the last year, for example, like Soderling, Davydenko, Federer and other players. On clay, is only two players.

Q. Behind Nadal, who are the best clay court players that you think are in the top five?
FERNANDO VERDASCO: Right now?

Q. Yes.
FERNANDO VERDASCO: I think I can put myself in the top five right now. But also there are very good players. I think Ferrer and Ferrero, they're having unbelievable year. Also Federer is going to be there for sure. I don't know, maybe Djokovic if he's in a good shape also.

Another Spaniard bending over for Nadal?!?! Unheard of

Verdasco

Fuck u Rafa!

Worst Masters ever should be demoted to a 500 ASAP!!

The level of submission in the Nadal- Spaniards relation is indescribable.

They should be ashamed calling themselves a sportsmen.

The MONTE CARLO FUTURES EVENT champion, Rafael Nadal.

I admit that Rafa has a good form if he will destroy a non-Spaniard and non-Challenger player, for example Soderling in Barcelona.
Then we can talk about his Roland Garros recapture.

You can quote my words.

What an exciting event. So glad clay season is finally here..

Congrats to Rafa. But what a weak tournament. No Federer, Del Potro or Davydenko.

God this domination bores me to tears. Rafa on clay, Fed on grass. No point even watching anymore.

Congrats Piggy on winning a $10,000 futures.

Sigh...Clay season is going to be very boring.:yawn:

Not that impressive- he's played a load of clowns.

Wake me up when some quality clay court players emerge.

Let's see if the ju.. :ignore: energy can last until RG

Masters are MM tournaments these days anyways with the 1st round Byes and best of 3 finals. That's why Fed doesn't give a shit about them anymore. ;)

Nadal Monte Carlo 2010 = Mary Pierce Hilton Head 2000

And we all know what happened at Roland Garros that year.;)

Unreal from Nadal, nobody was going to beat him out there today. Dished out a beating just like he crushed Federer in the RG finals of 08. Verdasco put up a decent fight though really couldn't do much due to how amazing Rafa was playing. He didn't play poorly and both players were able to have some fun rallies, especially the point of the tournament which Verdasco won. Hopefully Nando can get to some more TMS finals and eventually win one, though his best bet would be on the hardcourts, or maybe the indoor swing seeing as many top players are pooped come the 4Q of the tour. He played a fantastic event and got himself back inside the top 10 where he belongs imo.

Congrats to Rafa, even though you obliterated one of my faves.:p Was really nice to see him so emotional after he finally won a tournament in almost a full year. I hope he owns the clay season like he always does and wins RG, Federer needs his nemesis back.

Verdasco is a pathetic ponce.

Rafa played at a relatively poor level (by his standards) in the 2nd set, passive, poor length of shot, UEs etc, but Verdy too much of a mug to take advantage of it.

What a mental midget this Verdasco... every time i see him play Nadal its almost like he just wants to JUST have a good showing.
Today i bet deep down he likes Nadal too much to be the one to stop the record, but his play was just horrendous!

Great to see Rafa end the year-long title drought. He’s in fine form and the only thing standing between him and a 5th RG are the “fucking knees”. Not sure why he’s playing Barca because he doesn’t need anymore tune-ups. He should just play Rome and be fresh for RG, Queens, Wimbledon, and hopefully the rest of the season.

and I'm sure he'll be serving plenty more of these on clay :p ...

One thing I have realised in my relatively short time at MTF is the amount of posters that 'hate' (=fear) Nadal. It's really laughable.

I do (hating and fearing), even though he's the most charming and best educated tennis player outside of court, with a great family and great values.

But on court he brings me an image of violence, sorry for saying that, but it's true, I can't help feeling that

I know that experts of tennis have told me that tennis is actually a sport similar to boxing, but I can't suffer thinking that, I don't look at tennis this way at all.

I also fear "hyperactivity", which he also expresses in my eyes, with all of his twitches ...

I know that many people love his "humanity", and feel it when he's on court, they cheer and love, they consider him as a lovely boy.

But it's really not what I feel when I look at him on court, and it's very hard for me understanding these people.

As you see, I now try in my posts not to talk badly about him, because I know that he's very well-educated and I try to respect people who love him. He just expresses a dimension of mankind which is totally stranger to me  But I felt like expressing this pure lack of understanding from me here.

Recently I read Mouratoglou (former Baghdatis's coach) who said that he was the same on court and outside of court, that he expressed his deep personality on court. Sorry but in my eyes, it rather looks as the opposite

You know, people have emotions, you can't help feeling them
You can laugh at that, well, but I'm weak :o

Sorry for Nadal's lovers, like Mimi and others, but I just can't help feeling that "image"

Seems you just don't like him, there is nothing to apologize for, its your opinion and its OK. But hating is a whole different ball game, you do not even know this person, so in my mind hating a tennis player is a little weird. How is it you hate, someone you do not know?
