yes, if Federer retire, Nadal breaks his leg completly off, Murray dies of laughing too much, and Delpo wrist snaps into 2 pieces.

No.

Because:

a) Murray is the REAL number 1
b) Verdasco is the real deal

Only if Junqueira retires.

He may for a week or two, but never see him as a long term number 1 like a Federer, Nadal, or Hewitt.

Only if Berrer and The Baker will miss claycourt season.

Too fragile, mentally and physically; so there's often something to prevent enough big match wins to take the ranking positively.
May, however, slip in there if the Top Three crumble.

Probably, in my opinionat the earliest next year unless he reverses his slam fortunes in 2010. I don't really imagine him having a reign at #1 though, but everything can change so fast it's silly to say it's impossible.

Not with that WTA-serve he has now. Even Nadal has better one .

You wonder how much Novak wants to get to number 1, he needs more desire to get to the top.

Some day. Not this year...

I'd say it's 50/50. I will not be surprised if he makes it to that spot someday, nor will I be surprised if he doesn't quite get there. It depends in part on how Federer, Nadal, and other top players do in the next few years. (There are some other fine, important players who only made it to No. 2 -- Chang & Ivanisevic, for example.)

He can do in the future but for just a few weeks. You know with his asthma and stamina issues he won't last long as #1. Maybe #1 for like a month or 2 months.

to be honest, i can see him being no.1 some day, it just won't be anytime soon and i think it will be a brief stint.
(btw good thread to bump when he does become no.1)

right now though, too many things are holding him back, he is not mentally nor physically tough enough in the slams (ok he has won a slam), but his breathing problems and endurance issues are telling in a best of 5 sets match, and i just think he is too fragile.

and also just reading some of his pressers in the last year or two, he seems content being the man behind federer and nadal, he needs to go back to how he was during 2007-may 2008 when he went out there and did not care what people thought, and was actually an aggressive player, instead of what he is now...
