Boredo had a lot of break chances in the 1st set, but wasn't able to convert them often enough.

Nalbandian stepped it up when it counted, don't get extra points for winning in style. Keep it up.

Well, where are the ones who said that Nalby wouldn't get it done today-that he was "too tired" and would not have enough left? Where are you? Were you watching the match, or making "ass"umptions?

He can challenge Djokovic as long as he will be able to run properly.

Yeah, that is good...

I can see him beating Wawrinka in the next round and then Verdasco in semis....

But Nadal wont lose a set no matter what.

Didn't say he wouldn't do it, but his stamina is still suspect.

Hooray, he keeps on going!

It was classic Boredo playing 3 and 5m behind the baseline and just defending. As long as Nalbandian was able to remain calm and strike the ball fairly well then the match was his to win, exposing Boredo on the backhand side, then hitting the backhand down the line effectively.

All good to getting back his ranking to where it should be.

VAMOOOOOS! :rocker2:

More than his fan I'm a fan of the most beautiful twohanded backhand in the world.
Let's hope he will make some noise during the season. It's already nice to see him back on track.

Crappy play from Nalbandian in the first set. Trying to conserve energy and killing every ball, which doesn't work on clay. Robredo was loving the pace and just waiting for the error. Played a smarter second set constructing points and closing the net. It's okay to hit rally balls against Robredo, he can't hurt you off either wing.

For a 3 and 4 result this match was actually far from routuine. Nalbandian had to work hard and beating Robredo always takes a good performance and the Argie was up to the task today. Interesting half of the draw, wouldn't rule any of the remaining players out of contention for making the finals.

Tommy, you won't win playing 5m behind the baseline. :sobbing:

Once he was aggressive he mostly won the points, I don't know why he did not try more often.

This match was Mr Variety vs Mr One-dimensional.

This match was Mr Variety vs Mr One-dimensional.

You really think so? IMO Nalbandian is a long way from being Mr Variety. He has a standard way of playing which he exhibits vs all players which tends to involve changing the direction of the ball with his fluid groundstrokes, only comes to net to finish points (albeit fairly regularly, but as a product of his groundies, not as an end in itself). Just because his game is aesthetically pleasing, doesn't equate to it being diverse.

David vs. Novak should be classic tennis  :yeah: my heart is divided between both of them, let's hope the winner reaches the final :D

relatively speaking he is quite varied.

He's not a ballbasher or grinder though, he's a shotmaker off both wings. He creates angles, plus his volleys are better than most of the top players bar Fed/Murray and he can cleanly strike winners off both sides.

Not to mention his drop shots are pretty reliable.

Yeah, fair points. He does have far more all court nous than your average top 100 player but hardly a beacon of variety either. Never really changes game plan for instance.

Pretty conclusive proof that Boredo is on the way out. After the 6th or 7th bp he missed, the last bunch being a 0-40, he basicallly gave up for a chunk of the match, and only reappeared after 5 lost games later (0-2 in the 2nd set). There's been a lot of that from him of late, since perhaps Roland Garros last year, but there was always the question whether he'd merely retreated to his clay origins, and was no longer bothered about the hard court season. Now it's pretty clear he's just useless on all surfaces.

MTF will no doubt be distraught to see no more Boredo at the sharp end of tournaments.

As for Nalby, good stuff from him. There was a touch of choking at times, as in the Youzhny match, but he held up mentally quite well. It was probably important he didn't let this slide to a third set - not sure he has the reserves after a hard 175 minutes yesterday - but he seemed aware of that, closing the match out with good focus.

who is mr.variety for you.. let me guess, soderling?

out of the top 50, only a few use as much variety as david.. i can think of federer, stepanek, monfils, murray, baghdatis and djoker.
not many can use variety effectively and be a top player, go ask santoro, sure he had a few good wins, but that was it.
if u want to see "variety" every shot go watch an exho.

Did a counter side-spin drop very effectively too

Nalbandian does possess quite a bit of variety in my opinion, at least compared to most of the current crop. He uses different speeds, angles and spins regularly in rallies with great effect and you can see how much it frustrates/surprises players. He's also very good at knowing when to attack; that balance he has is great - waiting at just about the right moment to pounce - turning defence into attack and so on. His slice may not be the best, but it's effective enough to keep him in points when he needs it the most. He's also never afraid to come into the net to finish off a point, and his dropshot has some real touch - rarely does it just sit up. Today I also saw him serve and volley at the end... seen it before too.

I'm not saying he's the greatest as far as variety is concerned, but saying he's a long way from being Mr. Variety is a bit of an exaggeration too.
