A bagel is a dish best served cold.

But seriously - Berdych was very good. Gasquet was very bad.

It made 6-2 6-0

Richard should be ashamed of himself. A truly pathetic display on every level. Every shot into the midcourt, allowing berdych to simply step in and hit the winner. I don't feel sorry for Gasgay anymore, I'm beginning to hate him for his gutless character and mental and physical weakness and poor attitude.

I guess Gasquet must still be developing his game

Absolutely disgraceful play and attitude. Being ranked in the 70s and playing the Tunis Challeneger while the rest of the field is in Rome sounds about right. :yeah:

Rock solid Berdych made Gasquet look like a pussy-pusher. Shame.. Feel sorry for all Richie's fans.

During the last game he won in the match, he fought back from 15-40 with some very good tennis.

Other than that, his level just wasn't anywhere near Berdych. Not even close.

Unlucky to draw Berdych in the second round but Richard is not even challenger level good at the moment. His face at the end was painful to see. Hope he goes back to basics and keeps on practicing, or he could just sleepwalk away the clay court season. :/

Fully agree. Rarely in ATP we see such a one sided match. Richard looked like a kid. The difference in level was just amazing. Thomas is playing extremely well, but it's hard to evaluate his level against such a weak opponent. Nando will be a serious test.

Damn. What a beatdown.

Like many in this thread have said, Richard needs to play some challengers. Just to get the confidence back.

last two seasons Gasquet has struggled to beat players ranked 40-45 left and right, let alone to beat top 10-20 players.

Was the match as bad as the second set stats.

Glad I missed that one I think.

Rumour
04-13-2010, 09:15 PM
Gasquet didn't really play a bad 1st set, awful 2nd set though!
Going purely by the stats you posted earlier (as I didn't see the match), both players had a mostly mediocre first set with Gasquet losing the key (break) points. The second, however, Berdych turned it up while the Frenchman was downright dreadful - not even hitting a single winner :o Even more damning are the comments from other posters about his facial expression at the handshake  There's no shame in losing to his opponent in and of itself, but the way he did it and his reaction afterwards speaks volumes.

Honestly, I've tried for as long as I can to hold out hope for Gasquet fulfilling more of his potential and at least contending with - if not beating - the top players on a more regular basis. Hell, if someone like Agassi could make the amazing comeback he did then surely anything is possible... right? But I'm simply not feeling any real optimism where Gasquet's concerned any more in regards to a sustained turnaround. I'd love for him to prove me wrong but it just doesn't seem like he's got it in him right now and nothing in his current circumstances indicates a sudden spark is imminent.

After the whole drug test fiasco I thought, like others, that maybe he would look at his reinstatement as a second chance of sorts and start to play more freely. Even if the results didn't come right away, hopefully Gasquet would at least rediscover his affinity/love/passion for the game and put together some solid stretches of inspired play. Yet it seems like he's back to where he was pre-suspension, maybe even worse. Yes we all know about the burden of expectations that was placed on him from a young age but, at this point, I think it's safe to say it has lightened considerably.

No one is expecting Gasquet to set the tennis world on fire any more, but how about some burn marks or singeing around the edges? Anything other than just fading into oblivion, which is what I fear is happening to him - and having seen the brilliance he is capable of producing on the tennis court, I find that just plain wrong. Even his haters surely acknowledge that Gasquet's true level is better than what we're seeing now - maybe not elite but certainly not this. I just hope he realizes that himself and strives to regain it one day, but I fear time is running out...

Gasquet is cleverly saving his unstoppable form for RG. Smart tactics to fool everyone into thinking it was a flash in the pan.

Just a bad day.....happens....

But the problem is not there..The problem is Berdych's knees !
I honestly can't watch when he serves because i'm so focused on his ugly knees...
very painful to watch !

So, berdych plays very good and gasquet not....so what ?

Tennis is not about one match luckily and gasquet will play much better and sadly berdych much worse...

Bad day? More like a bad year, it's been going on for ages.

I think Gasquet's main problem is a big lack of confidence.
He was never the confident type of guy even during his good stretches but now, with all those losses in crucial matches he should have never lost(Murray,Gonzalez,Youzhny),his confidence has been completely destroyed and we are seeing the results of this right now.
Hard to be confident when you consistently lose even matches where you play well.

Gasquet's interviews are a joke most of the time.
Seles had to go through something far worse than what Gasquet had to endure last year and yet,it didn't prevent her to make an extraordinary comeback.
The guy should really stop with those excuses.
What made me laugh the most in his yesterday's interview was when he said "it's not grave if i lost,i'm just happy to play tennis again,it's a pleasure to me".
Yeah Richard, you for sure looked happy to be on the court yesterday..........

This is horrible lol. But good stuff from Berdych, the guy seems to be extremely confident at the moment. Slowly living up to his true potential. Still a bit of a mental midget thoughBut it's improving, I mean yesterday on every BP he faced he put in a great 1st serve if I remember correctly, and never even panicked. I mean Berdych was 4-1* 40-15 up and under 5 minutes later he was at *4-2 30-40 and was still calm as can be. :D
