It would be great to have a similiar thread for this year and as George doesn’t seem to be that interested in running the poll – he probably is a bit afraid of the possibility to see Marat winning this for the first time :p - I thought to start this thread and count the votes.

It would be much appreciated if you would include reasons for your decisions, but it’s not a requirement. You have to name at least 5 players or votes won’t count. Of course you can only vote once for the same player.

Here is how the points will be distributed:

#1 = 10
#2 = 9
#3 = 8
#4 = 7
#5 = 6
#6 = 5
#7= 4
#8= 3
#9 = 2
#10= 1

Hopefully many people will participate :)

Final result:

1 Safin, Marat 464

2 Edberg, Stefan 366
3 Rafter, Patrick 345

4 Sampras, Pete 326
5 Kuerten, Gustavo 322

1 Gustavo Kuerten - What more has to be said as "Tennis in the shape of a heart"?

http://www.soundoffcolumn.com/images/_Sports_GK_1.jpg

Loved to see him play so much and really regret it that I didn't went to tournaments earlier to see him play live. I also always felt personally connected to him a bit as I know how it is to have a handicapped brother.
It's such a shame that Guga's career was overshadowed by his hip problems.

2 Michael Stich - I like players who show emotions

http://pix.sueddeutsche.de/sport/83/418847/image_kopf-1190215306.jpg

Pete once said about Michael that he would be the player with the best game of all the players on a good day. Unfortunately Michael never got the respect here in Germany he deserved for his achievements. What an irony that even on the day of his biggest triumph it was all about Becker even on the court when the umpire said "Game, Set and Match Becker"...

3 Patrick Rafter - The best player who never got to win Wimbledon

I would have so loved to see him winning in Wimbledon one day, but who will ever forget his match against Goran? What an atmosphere there was on that day :worship:

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/45941000/jpg/_45941081_rafter3_getty_282.jpg

4 Stefan Edberg

Legendary rivalry with Boris and always a true pleasure to watch :)

5 Boris Becker

Where would have tennis in Germany been without him? I remember his first triumph in Wimbledon, the yellow Boris T-Shirt I had... I don't really like him now, but will never forget how he has really been responsible for awaking my interest in tennis.

6 Mats Wilander

I mostly remember him as a part of the famous German-Swedish tennisrivalry in the 80ies.

7 Pete Sampras

I didn't really liked him for beating my favourite players all the time :p, but I always had huge respect for his achievements, even more now when I witnessed Roger trying to equal and surpass Pete's records.

8 Magnus Norman

Unfortunately he had to retire quite early. I remember his final against Guga in Paris so well, where I nearly got a heart-attack at this match  It's great to see that he is successful as a coach nowadays. The improvement of Robin is really a sign of Magnus' great work.

9 Andre Agassi

I was never a fan of him during his "rebel" years, but I really respected him for his comeback after his fall in the rankings. He dropped a bit in my favourite ranking after having read his autobiography and witnessing his behaviour in the Haiti charity event.

10 Michael Westphal -

Unforgettable for his DC match against Tomas Smid. It's a tragedy that he died so young. I will never forget how sad I was when I heard the news on TV.

Honorable mention to Magnus Gustafsson, David Wheaton, Cedric Pioline and Alex Corretja :)

1) Krajicek, Richard - because he was a serve & volley player, and a Dutchman, my favorite player since Australian Open 1992 until the end of his career (2003) :yeah:

2) Edberg, Stefan - when I was a kid dreaming about being pro, I wanted to play like Edberg, unfortunately I was too weak to play one-handed backhand and maybe it was the reason of my quick dejection :tape:

3) Kuerten, Gustavo - I used to love his one-handed backhand and on-court attitude

4) Rafter, Patrick - loved his serve and volley game

5) Boetsch, Arnaud - beautiful backhand, always a pleasure watching him in France where he was inspired by the crowd

6) McEnroe, John - unfortunately I saw only last two years of his career but watching his matches from the 80's recently, I'd say he was a genius playing in the other dimension than anyone else ;)

7) Svensson, Jonas - my first favorite player, it had lasted a few months before he was replaced by Edberg

8) Siemerink, Jan - a volley-junkie ;) the most offensive player I've ever seen

9) Arazi, Hicham - golden left-hand, IMO a player with a potential to be as successful as Rios was

10) Rosset, Marc - I used to like his on-court attitude and his inside-out forehand

1. Noah (as much the man as the game, but some who only remember his final years don't remember how good he was in his early years, esp on clay)
2. Leconte (after McEnroe, I wish everyone had seen him play, esp on clay ... in his good days  )
3. Becker (I've always loved him on court, don't know why, he gave me a lot of hope on clay in his early years, didn't confirm)
4. McEnroe (like many, didn't like him much in his early years, but realized later what a phenomenon of tennis this man has been, probably THE phenomenon of tennis, together with Federer)
5. Medvedev (funny, nice and romantic guy, his interviews are to be read for those who didn't)
6. Lendl (was moved by his early years, he looked so skinny against Borg in RG 1981, then I always considered him quite as a "victim" and a great fighter)
7. Rafter (didn't watch as much tennis during these years but I saw him practicing, he had a lovely game)
8. Edberg (sometimes boring but sometimes beautiful points)
9. Pioline (French of course and I saw him often but also had a very varied game)
10. Agassi (I also liked Sampras but I always supported Agassi against Sampras, I appreciated him mostly from his victory in Wimbledon 1992, lovely tennis to win this tournament with his style, in that time it was a huge performance with the styles at play)

Just watched Rafter/Sampras 2000 Wimby Final on Tennis Channel Classic. I've always liked Rafter as a kid and it pleases me to know that MTF liked him as well. Just a great player to watch in his day and very well liked by all.

He was indeed a great player and it was a pleasure to follow his career :)

Too bad that he never won in Wimbledon. With the way he played he really deserved to win there at least once, but it wasn't meant to be

Due to the double votings of one poster (which all got deleted, see the post above) we still have the old #1.

Please make sure that you have a look before you post in this thread whether you have already named your favourite players :) Thanks in advance.

How did I miss this thread before?

Probably cos I venture into GM so rarely...

1. Andrei Pavel - I think most people that know me here wouldn't expect anything other than him for my #1 :) My experiences with him at the AO over the last years have been awesome and no one will come close to passing him as my all-time favourite.

2. Yevgeny Kafelnikov - A major crush in the early 90's which turned into a love of him as a player too
3. Stefan Edberg - My first tennis love & made me start watching it :hearts:
4. Jonas Bjorkman - Another of my early tennis loves
5. Jerome Golmard - hated that he had so many injuries, would have love to see him more
6. Thomas Enqvist - There was a time when I loved all the Swedes, he was another of my favourites
7. Pat Rafter - because it would be un-Australian to not list him, a beautiful person with a beautiful nature. Proud that he's Aussie :)
8. Renzo Furlan - my first ATP autograph and I was besotted :o
9. Thomas Muster - I am running out of retired players worthy of my list... I did like Muster though.
10. Alex Corretja - I'm still running short and wanted to make it to 10 (lovely guy though, I liked him and Albert Costa a lot)

You can add 2 names to your list in the Favourite Active Players Thread (were you just named 8 players).

I haven't found a player with the name Candeloro on the profiles on the ATP tour

Please name 4 other retired players in this thread if you have some more favourites :)

Is it me or are you deleting your posts once you have successfully bumped the thread, just to reuse them once the thread is gone again?

No, you are right. I want to collect more votes in the thread and not always write *bump* ;)
