For the sanity of everyone on MTF and for the sake of the board as a whole, Nadal needs to win the title and try to keep something resembling peace and order.

Will a Spanish player be able once for all to play great against Nadal without failing ?

I would like Ferrer to win one big tournament in his life.

But of course the expected winner is known by everybody ;)

Federer needs to play Monte Carlo, to try and stop Nadal. At the moment Nadal is low on confidence and Fed might have a chance - which could dent his confidence further.

This tournament is going to be too easy for Rafa. Djokovic is sucking, no Del Potro, no Davydenko, no Soderling. An easy confidence booster. And if he gets his confidence back then unfortunately Roger is going down in later clay tournaments.

I don't understand Roger's decision to skip Monte Carlo either - he did quite well in the tournament in the past years -, but his performances since the AO weren't really convincing to say the least. So it would have been a bit unlikely maybe that he would have reached the final in MC to play against Rafa, let alone win ;)

Even if JMDP and Kolya would been in the field it would have been their first tournament since their injury breaks and it would have been to see how far they would go in the tournament and if they actually would have played against Rafa.

Based on his achievements on clay in the past years Rafa would have been the favourite for the title in Monte Carlo anyway, no matter if Roger, JMDP or Kolya would have been in the field. He is the best clay court player of this generation.

People make way to much fuss about a crisis of Rafa and the fact that he hasn't won a title for a while.

I agree Rafa would have been the favourite anyway, even with everyone in the field. But some of the guys I listed beat him on hardcourts. So you do wonder what might happen if he came up against a few of them in succession. But in this tournament there aren't even any hardcourt Rafa-killers playing (except for Djokovic who is sucking badly at the moment). Just a load of clay mugs who are going to get crushed, giving him a free confidence boost.

Having said that, Djokovic beats Rafa easily on hardcourts and, despite being repeatedly talked up as a Rafa-killer on clay, his record stands at a less than impressive 0-9.

Yes, I know all that, but Rome, Estoril and Madrid are back-to-back tournaments and it would have made a bit more sense to play Monte Carlo and to skip Estoril instead.

Beating Rafa on HC and on clay are 2 different pair of shoes. As already said Davydenko's and Del Potro's form would have been questionable after their injury break and let's not forget that Söderling got a beating from Rafa a few weeks before RG last year on clay. I don't think that Robin's victory against Rafa at the French Open was a fluke - he reached the final -, but I guess Rafa would have been extra motivated in a match against Robin on clay.

Monaco and Ferrero for example, who are in Rafa's draw in MC, are no mugs on clay. When Rafa is a little of they might have a chance to make the match close, but I don't expect it. Rafa said that he was satisfied with the level of play he has shown in the tournaments this year so far. Now his favourite season is starting and he knows that this is the best chance of him in the year to win tournaments.

If anything needs to happen in the world in the next few weeks, it's Nadal winning Monte Carlo.

Has Nadal ever had this kind of pressure before? Needing to win a non-mandatory clay tournament? It's almost like he needs to prove that he's the clay GOAT (even though he arguably already is) after an 11-month title drought.

Also, does anyone think that Nadal himself even views this tournament as a must win? The tennis world of course does, but if Nadal doesn't then that changes things. Of course regaining the RG crown is his #1 priority but just wondering if he feels that winning the first clay tournament he enters is a prerequisite to winning RG again.

EDIT: On a personal note, I really want Djokovic to beat Nadal in the final  , just for Novak's sake. With so many devastating loses to Nadal (clay mostly), it would be such a tremendous boost to Novak's confidence. Then, I wouldn't mind if Nadal beat Djokovic in the RG final :)

(this is, of course, assuming that Novak can even reach the MC final)

Why should he? Last year he won Monte Carlo but still no RG. The winner of Monte Carlo does not always win RG in the same year. We saw it with Rafa in 2009. He won Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Roma but not the big prize. His #1 priority should be winning RG. Nobody remembers who won the tuneups. Only the slams.

 It might be based on that he had done it four years in row up until last year.

And there were plenty of people that thought that when Roger beat Rafa in MC or Rome '07, (I forget which) that he'd go on to beat Rafa in the final. And that didn't happen.

Rafa is my favorite player, but until he shows me something, I'm not going to predict him winning anything. My money is on my second fave, Nole.

Disagree. Nadal needs this win more than Nole. Rafa has not won a title in almost a year:eek: After Rafa won Rome, Nole won: Serbia, China, Bercy, Dubai. So in the past year Nole won 4 titles vs Rafa's ZERO titles. Rafa needs the win more than Nole since it appears Rafa can't win titles on HC anymore, unlike Nole. :wavey:
