Awesome draw in Monaco, he only needs to beat Almagro Ferrerro Nadal Murray and Djokovic in this order to win the tournament. Basically a real clay specialist and then two RG champions in the first 3 rounds...

I guess we'll soon see if he means buiseness on clay.

Well, I count on Almagro being a headcase more than Jo thoroughly outplaying him on slow MC clay. Let's see whether he takes the chance to take the first in TB. Not happy about giving back all those mini breaks

Nice match from both guys. Jo was slightly lucky to get the win finally, specially after failing to serve it out. 48% 1st serves. But yay for another clay court win. (What is it, like 5 wins now?)

I need a favour from one of you. Jo's website has been very sloppy in putting up English translations to his interviews. Can someone please translate this bit for me?

Quand on parle de terre battue, difficile de ne pas évoquer Rafael Nadal...

Pour moi, c'est encore le maître absolu sur cette surface. Mais si on ne disait pas ça, cela le mettrait en rogne...

Google translator is pretty confusing.

About your translation, greenhopper :
"When the subject is clay, hard not to mention Rafael Nadal."

The first match against Almagro was a great test for Jo. I'm delighted that despite his initial struggles on serve, he dug in resolutely and ultimately prevailed. I'm also pleased that he learned his lesson about moving on despite feeling aggrieved about that horrendous call (the serve was in and both the umpire and Almagro pointed to the wrong mark).

Good luck against Ferrero, Jo. Tough match, but just believe in your strengths.

So Jo broke his string unfortunately at deuce serving at 1-2. Then kept thinking about it and everything is going South. He really needs to learn to shrug it off and move on. Loses the first set 6-1.

So we still can't trust Jo to hold serve when it comes to crunch situations in matches. But he raised his level for the most part of sets 2 and 3. Set 1 probably hurt him in the end.

I doubt any clay match is good indication of that and MC more so than say Madrid or RG. Look at the stats of a couple of matches and you'll see that many players win about equal on first and second serve, which is telling

I'm not talking about clay, but this has been a pattern with Jo. He serves well throughout a set and plays a loose game throws a double or sprays a couple of forehands out of nowhere when trying to hang in a set. The same thing happened at 4-5, but his shots landed in and he recovered. Jo's greatly improved his overall game. The backhand looks good, but he just loses it mentally when things get tight.

I don't think so. He has one of the best, if not the best, deciding TB records. It doesn't get tighter than that. To me, it's more the tendency to lose focus for a game or two, happens sometimes at 5:6 sometimes at the beginning, sometimes in the middle of the set

Either way, I'm happy how he played the last two sets. If he can play that well on slow MC, he can do even better in Madrid and RG

greenhopper
04-15-2010, 04:00 PM
Sorry, didn't mean to nitpick.

I recall the match against Rafa in Paris last year which he lost 5-7 5-7 and the match against Murray in Canada (after beating Federer) where he couldn't hold on to the lead in the breaker. Then Guccione again last year and more recently was it against Benneteau?

This has only been a recent trend. I fondly remember the days when Jo would serve up his way out of 0-40 without any trouble.

Turquoise
04-16-2010, 08:04 AM
The first set yet again highlighted Jo's fragile mentality. Sure, that broken string was untimely, but he still has got to learn to move on, and fight tooth and nail to regain lost momentum.

Having said that, I was very pleased with his performances in the second and third sets. His shotmaking is breathtaking at times. He lacks the patience of natural clay grinders, but when you have the weapons that he has, particularly on the forehand, his game can be very effective. I applaud him for a fantastic overall performance, and for his gracious gesture to Ferrero at the end.

I'm looking forward to seeing how well he can adapt and progress in the warm-up tournaments for RG.

Well, that was harder than it needed to be, but credit to Daniel Brands for playing positive attacking tennis. Hope Jo makes a concerted effort to move closer to the baseline and attack second serves more against Ouanna. It's actually a decent quarter and hopefully he can play himself into form and push himself as far as he can. It's Roland Garros after all - this is the ideal place for him to feed off the crowd's support, which he loves to do.

greenhopper
05-28-2010, 04:06 PM
Jo could have won the first set. Had so many break points and double faulted at 5-6 in the TB. Thiemo has been serving big. Jo then took a medical time out for a back problem. Movement looked to be affected for sometime. Then I guess it loosened up because he's moving better now.

Jo got an early break in the 3rd set and went up 3-0, but then got broken again and now it's 3-all.

Unless he's very unlucky with the draw and draws some excellent unseeded grasscourter (not that many that come to mind, Mahut and Llodra mainly), he'll basically have one or two rounds to get used to the surface. Let's just hope he'll be fine by then.
