:D

I'll be in Rome and Roland Garros - and probably Munich too :D So I'll report in whenever I can. Currently considering a weekend in Monte Carlo too, but not sure if that will happen yet.

That would be great, Rosie! :D

:D One of the great things about living in London is that all these European clay events are very close :) And even though I obviously can't go all the time because of work, I can usually manage several long weekends, plus I always go to the first week of RG :D

I don't expect too much from him to be honest. I guess we'll have to hope for him to be seeded as often as possible to avoid tough opponents in the early rounds.

Ivanatis
04-08-2010, 02:12 PM
He's gonna be seeded in MC, sth. like 26-28.:yeah:

Baghdatis#1
04-09-2010, 10:33 PM
I thought there were only 16 seeds in Monte Carlo

*Ljubica*
04-10-2010, 01:28 PM
Marcos is 16th seed. Here is His section of the draw:-

[4] Marin Cilic (CRO) bye
Igor Andreev (RUS) - [WC] Simone Bolelli (ITA)
Olivier Rochus (BEL) - Andreas Seppi (ITA)
Albert Montanes (ESP) - [16] Marcos Baghdatis (CYP)

Sadly I won't be going to MC - can't get the time off work next week and it's too expensive just for a weekend. So I'll be watching on TV - and see my next live tennis in Rome.

Good luck Marcos :D

Ivanatis
04-10-2010, 02:27 PM
oh right
but glad he got the lucky 16th
Montanes is heavy stuff though:(

True  In fact a load of these so-called "clay court specialists" are heavy stuff........... a bit like wading through treacle to watch them play. So maybe I'm better off at work next week anyway, and go to Rome where the clay is marginally faster.

I saw the match on TV. It really wasn't so good at all in my opinion :o

Montanes was solid, but he really didn't have to do too much except keep the ball in play  Marcos didn't seem to move well at all on the clay - he was always a little slow to the ball, and he seemed to lose patience very quickly in the long rallies and tried to end things too quickly. Hopefully he now has almost 2 weeks to get used to the surface and will put on a better performance in Rome.

[1] Roger Federer (SUI) bye
Marcos Baghdatis (CYP) - Ernests Gulbis (LAT)

Gulbis was solid this week, so I guess we can be happy with a 2nd round.

How is Marcos on clay? I don't follow him much. Thanks

He's not really good on clay. His strokes are a bit flat and therefore clay doesn't suit him really well compared to hard courts and grass.

Hi guys :wavey:

Just quickly checking in from Rome. I was at Marcos' practice yesterday - with Novak. He was playing well and moving surprisingly well on the clay. His serve seemed to be working well too. I will be supporting him in his match today.

Bye for now from Rome :wavey:

well.. at least I didn't expect that much from him, so it's okay
I wouldn't mind him playing only RG until the grass season, all I want is him to be healthy during those 4 weeks

So true, I was so sad when he had to miss Wimbledon last year. At least this means he has a lot of points gaining he can do on grass this year.

I hope he at least can win a couple of matches at RG though. This clay losing streak does need to end.

*Ljubica*
04-26-2010, 04:30 PM
Well people, he honestly was moving well in practice yesterday - but today :spit: Truly awful :o I'm just back at the Hotel after the match, and it really was a bad one. He moved like a giraffe on ice as someone once famously said. I am sorry to have misled you that he may (just may) have won a match :o Still - never mind - guess I can go and cheer for him in Munich now - he's got to win a match sometime.

Oh and Deck - thanks for the Rep - can't Rep you back as I have to "spread the love" first, so consider this your Good Rep for the day .

Bye for now from Rome - where I feel a stiff drink might be needed after that match.

Baghdatis#1
04-27-2010, 01:46 AM
Expected
He might be able to get a clay win in Munich since it's a 250 event :D. Then again I thought the same in Belgrade last year and we all know what happened :tape:

he'll play local boy Gojowczyk in Munich
don't trust Baggy vs. anybody on clay these days:scared:

Baghdatis72
05-04-2010, 10:00 AM
Well Gojowczyk is ranked in the 300s and is 20 years old. If Baggy can't beat him on clay then I don't expect him to win on clay for a long time.

*Ljubica*

Well I was at the match , and all i can say at this point is it was cold and raining, and one of the most uncomfortable times I have ever spent on a tennis court for sheer cold weather.

Marcos wasn´t too happy - it was drizzling from the very start - during practice too.

First set he looked disinterested and bad-tempered :o and I thought he could indeed lose to Peter. Luckily for Marcos, the German kid was scared - was a very big occasion for him - for every decent shot he made a double fault or some basic schoolboy error, so in the end Marcos won by experience alone. Wasn´t the greatest match I´ve ever witnessed - in fact most entertainment came from the 101 ways Fergus Murphy found to pronounce Gojowczyk, - and every one of them was wrong :tape: But I guess at least he got the win.

Back at Hotel now drinking hot chocolate - won´t be watching anymore today - i have no wish to catch my death of cold.
Bye for now from freezing Munich

I don't expect him to beat Cilic though...

*Ljubica*
05-08-2010, 08:25 PM
He got very close to the win, and I think he should be proud of his Munich achievements. Reaching a semi-final and losing to a player like Cilic is nothing to be ashamed of. He put up a fight and never gave up, and had points to break back when Cilic was serving for the match. I hope he can take this form into Madrid where good points are on offer, - also hope he gets there safely as the volcanic ash cloud has currently closed all Spanish airports.

Excellent 1st set from Marcos, but Ferrer won't go down without a fight in front of his home crowd. If it goes to a final set (which seems likely), I doubt Marcos will take it. Ferrer will just grind him down.

 He also had a HUGE amount of luck  But guess these things happen. I'm sure Marcos will feel pretty down for a day or so - but he has good people around him, and he'll regroup pretty soon.

It's late here now - I'm off to  So don't be too sad.

Here is the Nice draw. I'm totally not sure that I think Marcos should be playing here  I think he should have stayed home for a day or so longer, relaxed, and then gone straight to Paris to prepare for RG............. but then - what do I know

Good luck to him anyway.

Well he could use a confidence boost after the Ferrer loss.

P.S: His home team Apollonas F.C won the cup in Cyprus after 9 years so he must be celebrating today ;)

:D Everyone laughed at me when I reported ages ago that he was moving well on clay, after I saw his practice session with Novak in Rome! Just took a while for the hard work and training to start to show results. (Not that I would ever say "I told you so" or anything :p )

Marcos played well yesterday, though truth is that Witten was not a very challenging opponent :o Best thing was he got the match done in straights because it really was a hot as hell out on Court 7. I don't think I've ever been so uncomfortable/close to fainting at a tennis match in my life as I was yesterday - was kind of glad when it was over and I could go in search of shade and ice-cream.

Good luck to him tomorrow though - hope the weather won't be too disruptive as there are thunder storms in Paris now, and lots of rain forecast for tomorrow as the storms pass though.

They're journeywomen :o
Not even top 100, and they basically play just challengers
I have no idea what they were doing in the MD. Cohen-Aloro is a wildcard (which is why she got on a big court), and I have no idea how Dubois got in

Don't worry, soon they'll be out of the top 200 and we won't have to deal with them anymore :D

Anyway im watching the game against Murray now live on the net,.... Marcos did great to come back from 2 sets down to win the 3rd in real style although now we are 2-1 Murray leading in the 4th... going to be a long road back from here :(

Hello and welcome :wavey:

Pity Marcos couldn't keep up the 3rd set level to take the match into a deciding set, but - all in all - I think we should be quite content with this clay court season. None of us expected too much - but he has surpassed our wildest expectations with solid performances on clay - so I wish him a good few days off for rest - and then a successful grass court swing.

Yeah his serve was really really bad with an average of 40% 1st serve in. He played amazing points but wasn't consistent throughout the match. Murray grinded him out.
