Mugboar up to his usual dirty tricks. Nalbandian's forehand was dreadful. Better luck next time Nalby. And yes, Nalby destroyed himself. His opponent just kept the ball in play and didn't do much more than that.

Embarassing that rafa would even celebrate beating a player who has one hip.

Lucky as hell this Nadull (as always).

Nalby should have won in straights, but his FH was utter shit today.

Nadal didn't destroy Nalbi. That's what David did in their first 2 matches.

David was very rusty.

It was too much to ask for Nalbandian to beat Nadal with so little match practice and so soon after recovery. His forehand was atrocious today.

Nalbandian showed some lapses of great tennis but it was expected He lacked intensity and matches to beat Nadull. This was not a beatdown as the score is deceiving. The spaniard started to serve very well since the second set too.

btw Umpires should not let Nadull to take 1 minute between each serve.

rafa_maniac
03-28-2010, 07:46 PM
Pretty lousy match. They were both just average in the first with Nalbandian better at just the right moment, then he got progressively worse and worse while Nadal just stayed the same, and gg. Rafa still looks likely to lose to the first decent hardcourter who puts up a consistent performance as has been the case for months now.

to be honest, Rafa was a bit lucky that Nalby ran out of steam, the spaniard didn't play his best but he wasn't bad either, after the first set and Nalby failing to convert in the second, it was a routine win for him ;)

Smoke944
03-28-2010, 07:48 PM
Well, I was wondering how Nalby only took 5 games against Melzer last week but now I know. Wow, his forehand is spectacularly bad right now. I mean this was a highlight real of the worst forehands errors you'll see anywhere.

Sunset of Age
03-28-2010, 07:48 PM
Let's just say that this wasn't a very convincing performance from Rafa at all. Shaky at times, some ridiculous UEs and that 1st TB was absolutely horrible.
Still he managed to pull it off, and a win = a win. Congrats, Rafa! :hatoff:
And keep your head together in the upcoming matches, please.

After losing the second set, Nalby just ran out of steam. Not quite unexpected.

Eden
03-28-2010, 07:49 PM
Nalby, next time you get BPs against Rafa please use them. Thanks.
Credit nevertheless for making this match that close. I didn't expected it considering the amount of matches Nalby has played since May last year.
Hopefully he stays injury free. Good luck for the upcoming tournaments.

Congrats to Rafa for coming through.

Why do you guys respond to obvious trolling (thread title)? Just talk about the match. It was on Nalbi's racquet, as always against Nadal, but he had no fuel left in the tank after the first set, it was obvious. Matchups only matter when someone can play their game. Nalbandian couldn't (long enough, without unforced errors), and Nadal defended well enough to win this. His form is still nowhere near good enough to consistently win. (Maybe on clay).

Exciting first set but after that Nalbandian was unable to keep up a good level and Nadal did well to take the match away from the Argentine so quickly. An accomplished performance and Nalbandian still not ready to win a match where he is forced to keep up intensity for a long time.

How cute was Nadal in his post match interview with Fox Sports? I'm not even a fan and I thought it was kind of squeee worthy. Maybe the yellow shirt just made it seem 'sunny' somehow.

Anyway, serious question for Nalbandian fans... what did you see in him today? Hope for the future once he gets some more matches or has the hip injury and surgery basically put him on a very short countdown to retirement? I saw some glimpses of hope but I never followed him that closely so I have nothing to measure against. Please enlighten me. Thanks.

The first set was good stuff, Rafa was a bit shaky in the start of the second, serving at 2-2 15-40, but threw down a few bombs to save bp and it was cruise control thereafter.

Some great rallies from both men and some not so good :help:

Rafa will need to pick it up a bit if he wants to win the title, and Nalbandian looked good considering how often he has been injured of late. Hopefully Dave can find his forehand and have a good clay season.

Was Nalby up 10-15 times in nadals serve either 0-30, 15-30 15-40 and 40-40 i lost count. None the less he gifted nadal about 3 breaks of serve at the first BP with one of his 47 UE.

Nadal choked again in crucial moments and moonballed his way out of trouble.

When he is ready physically and mentally he will. For the moment it is enough for me he is injury free and gradually finding his game and building his confidence.

Nadal has extraordinary passion for the game which allows him to win those matches. Nalbandian a little bit overreacted after winning first set, usually after such a set you win 7-6(8) 6-2 but not against Nadal. Maybe someone thaught him in the very early stages of his tennis journey to appreciate tight losing sets in a way "don't worry, you'll stay longer on court, you love it, no?" ;)

"Destroys" an out of shape guy rehabbing from hip surgery in three sets... Now that is funny..

Nalbandian has to be the most interesting guy I've seen in a long time. Plays regularly and gains weight. Rehabs from hip surgery and loses weight. He should write a book on weight loss management.

I love all this bs about match practice.. Nadal's been out for 3 months.. This is his second tournament.

Maybe time to check Rafa's tournamentschedule again, hmm? ;)

This is certainly his second tournament since his injury. IW and Miami.

Tv showed Nadull exceeding the allowed time between serve four times (There were even more), two in a row in 4-5 40-40 in the first set and
two in a row in 4-2 40-40 ( almost 50 seconds )in the third and of course Nadull hit all four great serves and could hold serve.

Umpire should not let this anymore, this is out of control.

Nalbandian is desperate to get his ranking up and really was on his game and looks in very good shape but Nadal withstood the adversity and prevailed in the end over a dangerous adversary. This could be a win that launches Nadal back up to #2 over Murray and Djokovic who are floundering. And if he can get his hooks into Federer again, you have to give the slightest of edges to Rafa.

People said Nadal looked like he lost weight but he looks as big and strong as ever. The knees are "perfect" he told a reporter at INdian Wells, no tape jobs, everything seems right for Rafa to make another assault on #1.

This win over Nalbandian, saving the key BPs and set points could be the spark he has been in need of.

From my knowledge, every win is huge for Rafa

It was a good effort from him to wrench control back after what looked to be a shaky start to the second set. He camped the backhand corner and kept hitting the off-forehand to Big Dave's own forehand, which troubled the latter at certain moments. That was a good sign that Nadal is ready to adapt his tactics, because there are still guys out there that can beat him on this surface.

Just like heaven

It has nothing to do with Nalby'lose. It's just true that Nadull against this rule very often. Unless you are blind.

Yes and a huge lose for beautiful tennis.

I don't think this was a huge win for Nadal.
Don't get carried away, Nadal didn't win because he was "tennistically" superior, he did because David is rusty and still not in shape.

No he didn't  Rafa was closer to winning it in 2 as he was actually a break up in set 1, and had SP in the TB :)

David had his chances in the second set.
When he failed to break his forehand went shipwreck.

No shit Sherlock.

Start reading the discussion from start.

Everko said: nalbandian never stood a chance

I said: yes he did have chances in the second set (Nadal's first 2 serve games were breakable. Then David FH went off.)

you say: Nadal had more chances of winning it in 2. Quite derailing the point in the discussion.

Fact : you can't overargue Argies especially when it comes to Nalbandian. Even I couldn't. And I can overargue a hundred of Americans in the European morning  So, give it a rest, Linda

Soup, a possibility of a break in first 2 games means nothing. Just my 5 cents for this fruitful discussion ;)

A break in first two games gives a chance to win a set  but a possibility of a break?! Hold me four, as we say in Odessa. That's way overstretching.

Nadal needed 3 sets to beat a guy who had hip surgery and has played like 5 matches in the last 9 months. Melzer did a lot better in Indian Wells.

Nalbandian came back from his injury earlier than Rafa :bigwave:

No excuses here. Indoor court with Nalbandian in the hottest form of his life just happens once in a while.
Nadal will win most of their encounters because he is a much better player!
