Career-threatening injury for Ljubo?? :(

At 6-4 1*-0 30-15 he hits a big first serve and hurts is lower back. Tries to get to his chair, but just falls down half way and never gets up  the physio was out there for a while, but Ljubo was really struggling. Couldn't even lift his upper body to get his arm out from under him. He got up with a lot of help after about 15 minutes and slowly limped over to his wife (who was going crazy because they wouldn't let her on the court, even after he retired).

Ljubo was playing a pretty solid early match up til then. Big serves whenever he needed them (Becker didn't get a single return back when he had bp) and breaking Becker in the two games he pressed. So sad

Damn. Hope he's fine and it's not as bad as it looked.

It looked really bad. He already had lower back problems in Australia and recovered, but this time it looked much more serious

This is so sad, I cant even find words. I guess Ljubo really took all he had in his body to win Indian Wells, what a champion Ljubo is and if this is the end of his career it is a more worthy end than most players get.

hopefully not :awww: He just had the tournament of his life...would be a real shame if he had to stop now due to injury

no its not the end of his life. he just needs to get some rest for a month or so and come back in fine form. you just wait.

Wow. I really hope he'll be okay. Such a shame to have a bad injury after having such a great tournament last week.

That would be quite the way to finish your career, after winning your biggest title. Might be the perfect time to call it a day.

Then again it's always better when a player can make his own decision before his body lets up.

You were obviously in hibernation for the last couple of weeks, I take it.

I really hope he can come back from this, but if it does turn out to be career-ending, the only good thing is that it happened now and not a week ago.

Atleast he acheived a lifegoal before this happened, i haven't seen it but it does sound serious.

I'm very disappointed as a fan and I feel badly for him. His performance at IW was inspiring and I was looking forward to seeing how far he could take it. I hope it's not an injury with a 6-month recovery time because tennis will be the loser for it.

03-27-2010, 07:46 AM
Idiot. Did you watch Indian Wells?

yes i did,his serve is the only thing that's saving him.his movement is legendary slow, tends to finish points early.

btw i have followed his whole career,as he is one of my neighbors sportsmen, and i bet i know a bit more about his game than you do.

p.s you're an idiot if you believe he can be better than at the time when he was no.3 I'm just being objective here,so you can go hate somewhere else.

either way wish a quick recovery to legenda:)

it was a great couple of weeks in IW,i don't deny it,but i meant more about may 2006. when he was third racquet of the world:cool:

This is just so sad. Get well, Ljubo

My advice to him would be...don't play too many tournaments now, make a Federer type of schedule.
However, it's impossible, he probably thought "I'm gonna lose in 3rd or 4th round of IW, so I'll be fresh for Miami".
But he won IW and suddenly he has a huge amount of matches played in a short time -> injury more likely to happen.

Damn, Ljubo. :sobbing:

Sounds like it was a horrible injury, but hopefully the outlook will be more positive. It's going to be hard for him to have as much confidence in his body now after this injury appeared to happen off a routine serve, as croat 123 says.

Poster(s) above me have a point...obviously we'd rather the injury had never happened, but at least he got to win his biggest title beforehand. Hopefully he can draw on the positive vibes from that in what could be a tough recovery process.

When I saw that he retired ( 3.20 am ) I was not able to sleep.
He had a good draw, and he could get in top 10 i guess.
I would give all the money I have just to see him playing Casablanca ATP.
hang on LJUBO LEGENDO!

It just sounds like a severe spasm, he'll probably be totally fine within a week, two or three at the longest. When you have a bad back these kinds of things happen now and then. I get them, they suck and they really floor you, but then they go away...until next time.

In case you're interested in a statement from the guy himself... he's been Tweeting from the @TennisTV account on Twitter this week (the account of the people who organize the ATP videos) and has this to say...

@TennisTV
IL: This is very bad luck but life goes on. I was up a set and a break and injured my back, having to retire. Hope it is not too serious.

If it was a career-ending injury I imagine he would be more downbeat but I guess we should wait for more news.

Doomach777

At press conferece yesterday after match ljubo said that he felt temporary pain in his back, and he didnt wanted to risk, so he retired. Author of the text hopes that Ljubo will be playing Monte Carlo Masters, but havnt mentioned casablanca atp. I guess he forgot it. We will see what will ljubo say today.

What a shame this injury had to happen just when it looks like Ljubicic's career was gaining a second wind  Of course he's in the tail end of his career, no one disputes that, but as last week proved it doesn't automatically mean all his better days and results were behind him.

Probably severe back muscle spasm than herniated disc or broken spine. His back locked up.

He needs to do warm ups well and conditioning and physio.

He turned in live from Miami in the sports news of Croatian TV, he says he has his physio with him 24/7, he is fine now, even started with a couple of easy training sessions; he was blocked at first and scared, but the pain went a way slowly....

Davis cup is history 100%, he said the only chance he comes back is if 2/3 (Cilic,Karlovic or Ancic) are not fit to play.....

Very possible. Three of the most injury-prone in the ATP.

Sounds more like 60%.

What on earth are you talking about. Cilic has hardly had any injuries (*knocks on wood*);Karlovic was not particularly plagued by injuries and even the eternally absent Ancic is not your typical injury prone player. Most of his time out is due to an illness and its long-term consequences, plus some accident injuries when water skiing, not the wear and tear type injuries.
