Way to go Djokovic. 11 double faults in the entire match!! Plus last I heard 53 and counting unforced errors midway through the third set.

Not to forget, smashing his racquet and apparently being booed.

Can't be shocked by the result considering Djokovic's trend this year...but this is a little bit of a surprise!

Haven't seen him since Dubai...and watching some of him there, it seems that the serve is a major liability. Very awkward take back, and clearly he would struggle with timing on it. Obviously it can take a little while to adjust to changes, but was there any need to mess with his serve anyway...it was fine before. Generally, his all-round technique was great. Maybe just the physical side of his game needed extra work.

European clay court season takes on huge significance for Djoker...he'll be trailing in the wake of Federer, Nadal and Muzza before long at this rate (and most probably JMDP had he not been unfortunate with injury).

So i suppose he played very bda today as well. And he lost after 4*5 just maybe because he played so bad that he couldn't win even playing ugly even playing olie rochus in the 3rd set with batteries runninig out

Still not guaranteed but looking more likely. Nadal and Djokovic are about on equal terms now and if the calculations are correct, Federer needs to gain around 1200 points to secure his ranking from Nadal and Djokovic irrespective of their results.

EDIT: Wrong calculations. Difference is more around 3800 ~ points.

I was there for part of this match.. Djokovic looked awful. He would hit some amazing shots, Ollie would return them, then he would try some silly trick shot that didn't work. The crowd was not behind Novak, for the most part, which I thought was kind of strange, but fun. He was getting really emotional on court and looked like he would choke it away in the second, but hel serve when down 0-40. Pretty ridiculous loss for the #2 player, IMHO, but Rochus was a mad man out there, an completely deserved the win!

I think that means Sampras's record is broken for sure. Federer is on 276 total weeks at number one right now. He only needs another 10 weeks to equal the record, and 11 weeks to break it.

How do Sampras fans feel about this? Mug era for sure. Federer only wins when his opponents are injured. Nadal owns him all the time, and should lead 20-0 in H2H if he wasn't injured:

Djokovic changed his service motion? I keep seeing posts about it but never got the chance to see how ridiculous his serve is of late. During the clay season he really should get back to basics because of the ton of points he has to defend.

Well done to Rochus. He's come close so many times of pulling off the big upsets but always choked - this time he held on to it. Hope he wins a few more (having said that, I don't know who his next round opponent is :o).

Fed will be number 1 until the end of Roland-Garros, that's sure but it would only make 285 weeks, Sampras had 286.

Fed needs to keep number 1 after Roland-Garros to equal Sampras (and one more week to beat him)

As for Djokovic, at 5-4 second set, he had lost 43% points on his serve for that set, 7 break points for Rochus who had won only one. And he had already lost first set 6-2.

For sure this match has been far worse than Kohlschreiber's : at least against Kohlschreiber he had a good period

Sorry to see the state of Djokovic's tennis as of late, but I hope he will try to use his extra week off to practice and come back stronger for the clay season. He is down to play

What does this mean with regards to Federer's total weeks at number 1?

I posted this in the Federer section of the forum but since several people seem to be asking, I hope nobody will mind if I repost what I wrote there:

If you are talking about the maximum totals for the week before Wimbledon (in which Federer has a chance to beat Sampras' total weeks at no. 1) then I have calculated the following maximum point values - although 250 points can be deducted from these values if the top players to not play Casablanca or Houston:

Murray: 11,285
Djokovic: 11,080
Del Potro: 10,315
Nadal: 10,190

Remember that if Federer pulls out of competition entirely he will still have a minimum 7,225 points at this point in time. So in my opinion another 3000 points in total from Miami, (perhaps Monte Carlo), Rome, Estoril, Madrid, Roland Garros and Halle should secure him the world no. 1 ranking going into Wimbledon. Having said that, in the event that he is overtaken before then, I am sure that the officials at Wimbledon will still give him the top seeding.

His service was in the toilet already at IW. There's just a bit of opening of the racquet face or "flattening" of the racquet in his take back.

This seems to be to be a new low for Djoko. He's got a lot of thinking and a lot of work to do. I wish him well.

I'd like to counter the point about the number one being safe until RG, Murray can still overtake him after Madrid.

However if Murray sticks to his schedule and doesn't play Monte Carlo it is Federers to the end of RG at least for certain.

Quite right, but like you I cannot envisage Murray winning all of the matches he plays on clay. Mathematically Davydenko can still overtake Federer before RG but his injury will prevent that from happening. Breaking the record is another matter as his rivals still can potentially gain a good number of points on him at the French Open.

Back to the Rochus vs. Djokovic match...good to see Rochus making amends for his lacklustre start to 2010. And despite Djokovic's poor showing today I would not be so quick to write him off for the clay season. Provided he is able to stay mentally strong if anyone can eke out close wins despite poor form, it is him.

Someone on here mentioned that Muzza would be requesting a WC (:tape: :o) for either Monte Carlo or Barcelona. I guess that how he performs in Miami will determine which event he will target.

How is it possible for Muzza to overtake Fed by Madrid? Muzza cannot gain any points in Miami, so he'll still be miles behind Fed by the start of the clay.

No Davy can't overtake until RG. If he wins Rome, Monte, Madrid and Barca (he can't gain points elsewhere) he will have 8375 points. If Federer plays nothing before RG he will still have 9225.

The Dubai result undoubtedly flatters Djokovic imo. In which case, there is no comparison between the two of them as far as results in 2010 go (Muzza obviously out-performed him at AO and in Masters so far), and, arguably, Muzza's game isn't suffering as much as Djoker's. :o

The serve has been different for quite a while now... In 2007/2008 it was different and much better. Last year and this year, not so much.

He seems to have serious timing issues IMO. He makes contact with the ball quite late, not using his full frame and thus not getting the same power. Also, his racquet head speed seems to have dropped a lot, at least this shows in the second serve IMO since creating spin (especially kick) is all about racquet head speed. He makes so many DFs now because of this I feel. "Pushing" the second serve in a sense.

As for the result :spit:. Nole get your game together :p. Maybe this is a better wake-up call than all those "Oh can still play like crap and win anyways" -matches. Get your confidence up on clay like last year and build from that :).

Actually bad play was well before Martin joined him . His problem is that he is unmotivated and has forgot what got him here. He is also not stronger than he was 3-4 years ago and he is still not serious enough . Did I say that's the reason he always plays down to his competition ? He is supposedly #2 but his results are terrible especially in grand slams and he has lost so many matches against average and older players.

Gosh is he that upset that Tommy decided to play for the US? Or is he sad that Odesnik was so stupid?

I noticed the service motion change in IW as well, it looks forced and awkward. Novak used to bend his torso backwards before he hit the ball, there are many photos of him in this 'Gumby like' position. It looked weird, but it still seemed so natural for him. Now, he keeps his torse straight as a board and nearly as stiff when he serves and it doesn't flow the way an effective serve motion should. I know they can't all be as pretty as Sampras and Haas when they serve, but Novak's current motion is a train wreck.

Bit harsh to label Rochus a mug after beating the no.2 but ok

Not quite. There's only one true #2 regardless of the mess that the ATP rankings are. And he's been there for the better part of the decade -- earning it stroke by stroke, title by title.

But still, you have a point.

Suddenly Federer's contenders seem to be really not dangerous at all. They are all broken down either physically (Nadal, Del Potro) or mentally (Djoke, Murray). So, who is the real nr2 (obviously Nadal, but certanly not if his knee is becoming sand).

Why does Murray and Djokovic have Corretja and Todd Martin assisting them as part time coaches? It seems kind of weird to me, I cant see what either player can give them, neither knows what it takes to even win a grand slam and their tennis style doesnt fit with the direction Murray and Djokovic should be taking with their game.

Djokovic's form is getting progressively more catastrophic with every tournament. Who will he lose to in Monte Carlo? Mike Bryan?

Murray mentally? Fed brought his big weapons out and beat him with them in Melbourne...not exactly Murray choking.

Murray has brought Corretja to help with his clay game, but I really don't see what Todd Martin has done for Nole except for totally screwing his game :o

Wrong, imo it was Alex Corretja. He played so bad when he was #2 after winning the TMC in late 98, lost to the mighty Christian Ruud in AO 99 and then finished outside the top 10 that year.

I just woke up and saw this amazing result. Was a bit worried when ollie lost momentum half through the 2nd set. Really strong to comeback after loosin the breaker and send this clown home. Minus 590 points for Novak and counting. Horrible that this mug is nr 2 on the rankings.

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP)—Novak Djokovic’s mistakes mounted, and so did the fans’ frustration. Midway through the final set, when the Serb sent yet another unsightly shot wide, there was a collective groan and a smattering of boos.

A short time later, when Djokovic walked off the court defeated, the jeers were louder. He made a thumbs-up gesture in response.

Actually Rochus might have won more easily

Some nice words by Blake about Rochus :

"The guy has so much talent,” Blake said. “I was saying to some of the people in the locker room, pound for pound, he’s got to be one of the best athletes in the world. Every ball it seems is over his head, and he’s getting up there and hitting it with such great strength and so cleanly.”

Faker is the worst #2 ever.

Ivanisevic and Haas were better.

Depends on what you look at... Do you look at how they perform after attaining the rank and living up to their seeding in big tournaments or do you look at the historical achievements?

Surely Djokovic, with 1 Grand Slam, 1 final, 1 TMC and several TMS is a worthy world nr. 2 when looking at the achievements?
