I see I got my wish for the draw
way to go Ollie!
and way to go Richard ! sounds like he just took a little mental break in the second , glad that he was able to pull it together and win the match
showed some good fight and concentration on his part
7 in a row - Hope this good streak continues

I slept through this match again  Good thing though. Reading you all's commentary, I might have died in the second set. But hopefully, we'll get another easy match with Rochus tomorrow and Richie's in the SF :D

I wouldn't count on an easy match tomorrow, Rochus is clearly playing well to beat Soderling and judging by the last few games I watched he was pretty good, much better than he has played against Gasquet. He will need to be on top form tomorrow!

ImmzB

Richard says he's starting to get tired, Dolgopolov made too many mistakes which made him lose his concentration but also a lots of winners.

He's talking about RG saying he's anxious to play as he couldn't the past two years, as long as he's not hurt. Always better to start early with the RG withdrawal excuses :rocker2:

Hope he is not that Tierd!

Agreed. Given how Richard played today, he could have tons of problems with Olie. In a way I kind of wished Richard would face Soderling, because keep beating these average players is good, but I wanted to see a test against top player. Richard has not beaten top 30 player on clay this year yet. On the other hand, getting ranking up is important as well, and hopefully he will keep his concentration tomorrow and make semis.

I really don't like when he plays a match expecting his opponent to miss on almost every shot.. today was the case, and I am sure he can adjust a little to better opponents and start hitting shots himself, I just wish he would do that in every match. That is the reason he gets in trouble when opponent not missing much.. I want to see aggressive Richard against Olie.

Vlad1980
05-19-2010, 07:08 PM
As far as getting tired, I am not sure why he EVER says that in public, because well, it gives his opponent extra motivation to push him harder knowing if match goes long they have chance. And how can he be tired, he played his matches in about an hour on average!

Cloudygirl
05-19-2010, 08:38 PM
I have no idea either. I was wondering if he is already trying to excuse a poor performance at Roland but surely noone expects anything of him now. he isn't even mentioned as a threat. The only expectation on him is that he shows up. I've only caught a couple of his recent matches but he has been positively received in france as far as I've seen so he doesn't have to worry about a hostile crowd but who knows what goes on in Richard's head.

*julie*
05-19-2010, 09:26 PM
I saw it on tv. He said it at the end of the match just to explain why he had troubles to close the match. I don't think it was excuses for his coming matches. He's been playing a lot lately... it's normal that he starts to feel tired.

Cloudygirl
05-19-2010, 09:32 PM
He's played 10 matches in 3 weeks most of which haven't lasted much more than an hour.

Compare to the stamina required for a slam where a single 5 set match might last several hours and I find that slightly worrying.

Gretchen.
05-19-2010, 09:35 PM
Good win, but he should definitely not be getting tired, or there will be no Grand Slam wins in his future. :/

I am loving THIS Richie! I am starting not to cross my fingers and hold my breathe everytime he serves for a set or match.

I only saw the last few games of each set but wht I saw was :yeah: particularily in the mental aspect. But for that one laspe game after he broke in the first set he was yet again pretty focused.

I know it's Richie and the next time he walks on the court it could be a completeley different ballgame but DAMN he has actually closed out on the first try about 6-7 matches in a row  Keep it up baby!

If it is and he has a really good draw, I'd never thought I'd say this because I hate tanking but I hope he tanks.

If he has a crap draw and draws fed or nadal might as well win Nice then.

Wouldn't mind Gasquet playing Isner or F.Lopez in the 1st Round if he had to face a Seed in the 1st Round.

Davodus
05-21-2010, 06:51 AM
Isner is in good form and already beat Richard on clay this year. Even if Richard gifted him the match, the clay at RG is faster than most other places and that, for me, would not be a good first round draw.

All I hope for the draw is that he stays away from one of the top guys in the first round or 2, because he can beat most people in the draw except the likes of Federer and Nadal. I even think he could beat Murray on clay.

When do they do Wimbledon seedings? Before or after queens?

I've just realised if he wins here, had a decent few rounds at Roland and did decently at queens he'd stand an outside chance of a wimby seeding with there being so many people injured right now.

Davodus
05-21-2010, 08:17 AM

Yeah, its really such a glaring weakness when he is playing a decent clay court opponent. Little pace and short too... right now he is holding because of timely serves + some net attacks.. if he would just stay on baseline, don't think he has much chance. He might as well risk a bit from baseline and go for it..

As far as retiurning, he must be more aggressive than so far against player of Starace calibre. I am not sure what he is thinking in that department.

FH in the net to lose serve...

I've lost count of the number of times he has given up a dominant position in a rally with a weak FH. I don't think I've ever seen it so bad. I mean, I think even Serena has a better FH...

I feel like when he has time, he can whack forehands at very good pace, but misses at times and easy ones too. But the high ones and yeah when he is stretched out are the ones he has tons of problems with. The more I see the more I blame Deblicker for not doing anything to improve these areas... he had from 05 to 09 to get better at that.

I feel that due to the technical weaknesses in his FH, he has little margin for error. Thus, he can rack up the winners when he goes for it (see Wimby QF) but it can also produce a lot of errors when he's off-form. That's why I can kind of understand why he's so defensive with the shot. What I cannot understand is why they haven't tweaked it technically and why it has regressed over the past few years. :help:

Just seen Murray in the first! I love Andy but Richie comes first with me. Have they played each other since Wimbly 2008? I can't remember it if they have. I hope Richard won't have a block as I feel that "that" Murray match was a decisive moment in his career and not in a good way.
Andy is definitely beatable on clay.

Are we still talking about his forehand - nothing new. BUT I do think his court movement is better, maybe he is just trying harder or more focused and anticipating better but he is getting to balls I don't think will. And thank goodness for his serve which he is popping at times.

Richie finish it in 2 please so you have something left for Verdasco.

I'm loving the fist pumps.

It takes a lot of willpower. Henin did it with her FH and serve. Dementieva had to toil for many years, but the fact that she managed to fix her serve should give hope to all.

:help:

Balls stay lower on grass and actually don't push you back like other surfaces, that's why its his best surface and the one where his forehand does not look as bad. What he can do even without changing anything drastically is to try to hit it deeper when he is trouble... just higher over the net, so it won't be as attackable. But the way he hits it is short and no pace, so Starace has all the time and more important angles to work with.

Good fight. Thanks to his serve, timely net play, dropshots and of course nice backhands, he was able to somehow get to tiebreaks in both sets, where Starace got tight.

There are negatives, and I hope Richard and his team will rewatch this match, analyze and hopefully make adjustments for the future.

if i had more risk factors, i probably would've had a heart attack from the stress watching that match - but it was a good scramble of a fight for him today. he'll definitely be tired after this one, and i do think the RG draw did play on his mind a little bit, making him seem a little bit rattled in his mood early in the match. but at the end of the day, it was a good opportunity for him to play a match where he needs to get stuck into for the long haul, and try to find a way out when he's being dictated the play initially. plus, to know that he battled through it, AND won, should really give him some confidence. it's important to have this assurance when you are going to face top 10 players - after all, it is their consistency that has created their rankings.

go richie, be comforted and reassured by this win!

Gasquet vs Murray: If he wins, it'll be the sweetest win ever. If he loses,
Korolev vs Djokovic:  enough said :o
Roddick vs Nieminen: not a good first round match for a player going in to this tournament with 0 wins on clay.

The French Open is gonna suck :o

Tori, Vickie and all other Murray fans.

But honestly he has a chance here. :spit:

Remember how he said after that Wimbledon loss that he would be glad to play Murray at HIS home and beat him there with the crowd cheering for him, well this is your chance Richie boy. :D

Crap I'm going to feel rubbish no matter what the outcome of the first round of Roland.

Richard stands a good chance there though. They are a good match up and Andy has had a bit of a rubbish clay season barring Madrid (and they are weird clay courts). Richard will be on a confidence high even if he loses this tournament provided he doesn't get double bagelled by Verdasco.
