MC report day 7 full of HUGE surprises:

It must have been a 6th sense which made me looking at the practice courts instead of watching Kohli on centre court upon arrival: Richard practised with Gabriel: 1 hour groundies, followed by a basket BHs, a basket FHs, a basket serve, a basket "try to finish the point with a volley" and as if he was not tired enough a basket volley/smash/volley/ smash. He did well on the last one though; not missing a single smash. Meanwhile Novak had warmed up on the neighbouring court and left again, mainly practising high balls.

As there was nobody around, I asked Richard, if he was playing Barcelona and he said yes, leaving tomorrow, I wished him good luck, told him to be "toujours avec toi" and got the usual smiling "merci".

Watched Juanqui losing to Nadal, the result was decisive, but Juanqui did not get blown off the court. Then I decided to buy me a coffee and saw Gabriel picking up a newly strung raquet and moving to the practice courts, so I followed him and guess who was already waiting at the practise court!

After a brief warm-up he played a long set with a guy I did not know, a Spanish-speaking leftie, Richard had huge troubles to get a grip on the opponents' serve, either netting or hitting the return wide.Theguy broke to get 6-4 up; but in a game in which Richie finally hit a return winner, he could break back. At 9-9 Richard finally could break the guy, they stopped after this, had been out on court for 90 minutes again.

I decided to leave Richard alone ( everything had already been said in the morning ;)) and have a word with Gabriel, first I asked him if he would be willing to answer some questions, politeness never fails; he was very forthcoming; I started with a question about his language skills, and he indeed confirmed that he can speak English, French, German, Spanish of course and Italian. :worship:

I asked for Richie's practise partner and learned that it was Zeballos. Then I asked if he believed in the power of work and he said yes, it is the only way to get going, I also adressed the weakness on the return, he agreed and noticed that it is a matter of confidence. Then I mentioned my faith in his abilities and wished him good luck.

By that time, the Verdasco match was about to start, but I decided to skip it, the day could not get better anymore.:D :D

Thanks for the report, Puschkin! I'm really glad you got to see a lot of him this week. It's nice to know Markus is making him work hard. Now, it's time to put that hard work to good use when it counts. Really hope he gets a decent draw in Barcelona, and a lucky break. It looks like a very good field, but one can expect that from a tournament in Spain.
Is anyone around here going to Barcelona?

me too and also is it actually going to be good for him to play a masters where he'll prob lose early. he'll be forced to have that as part of his points when he could add a 250 event instead where he stands more chance to get up the rankings.

talk about a tough uphill climb!!!

despite his performance these past few months, i was actually quite encouraged by something he said in his first round press conference. he actually stepped up and said that if he played badly or gained poor results, that's due to his own error and attitude on court, rather than blaming that of his coaches. i guess the press were needling him to comment about the way djokovic had mentioned a glitch in his performance whilst having more than one coach. but in his response, it gave us some insight into the fact that he wasn't going to shy away from his own shortcomings, and blame others for it. make of it what you will, but you can definitely see there is some maturity in his attitude towards his career. i like this personal growth as a person that's happening to richie, i am waiting for the oncourt results to reflect this :)

Just saw where Verdasco is through to the finals in MC. Maybe, hopefully, Rafa will wear him down and he will be pooped when he plays in Barcelona (wishful thinking). I don't really care for him that much.
But first, Richie needs to get past Andreev, who always seems to give him trouble.
It's possible, he can do it, just need to believe in his ability.

MC report day 8

It is somehow sad, when a tourney reaches semifinal stage, practise courts are deserted, there is less going on generally and everything is focussed on CC, where I had to sit next to people not watching a tennis match, but testing their camera without interruption, thus pushing me around and preventing my view, they were so busy, they had not even time to applaud good points. From that it will be clear, I did not take any pictures, I am a bad photographer and I want to follow matches or practises.

The matches were not great either, Novak played poorly and has no confidence; and Ferrer challenged Nadal less than Ferrero in my view.

ImmzB

Richard will have to play to win (meaning very aggressive) against Andreev, not push the ball around, cause in that case he will get crushed. Andreev can play really bad match too.

Puschkin, I don't know if you saw my question but when you saw Richard practice twice the other day, how long roughly did he practice for?
2 hours in the morning and 1 and 1/2 hours in the afternoon, so 3 and 1/2 hours in total, with a break of 2 1/2 hours in between. He was wet all over, but it did not look like he could not move his feet anymore at the end of it.

Vacation time again for Richie for most of the week unless he performs well.
Far from it, I feel.

As I have seen in MC, Markus makes him spend much more time on court practising when he is losing early, than if he won matches.

MC report Day 9

I keep it brief. A bit of an anti-climax, but verdasco was not as poor as the result, He was a bit unlucky, what could go wrong went wrong and for Nadal it was the othar way round. The overall outcome was never in doubt, though.

I have been reading how the volcano in Iceland is wrecking havoc on the air travel in Europe. I hope Puschkin arrived home safely, if she was going home soon. Tennis.com reported that some players were planning on driving from Monte Carlo to Barcelona. It must be pretty bad. I hope it is not quite as bad as reported. Things like this can be awful, especially for people with COPD, asthma, allergies, etc. Take care, everybody. I hope things get back to normal soon.
Hoping for a very good result today!!! Good luck Richard!!!

Best thing was he beat someone ranked higher than him that he has a negative head to head against. Might give him a bit of self belief. hi all :wavey:

I see there was no streaming for his 1st round. I was there. There was only Marcus in the box, very encouraging during the whole match. Richard started quite slowly as usual... not really confident, bad body language, far from the baseline... the first set was tight. In the TB, Richard played some amazing points to lead 5-3 if I remember well... and then a double fault and an ugly UE and it was tight again. Then he made a good winner and on the set point Andreev a really bad error while attacking.

For the second set the stadium was almost empty. Richard had a better attitude than in the first set. When broken he played more agressive on the returns. He also served better at the end of the set and made beautiful winners (bh, fh and at the net).
So... a very good match. Hopefully this match will give him confidence for tomorrow.

and yes, hopefully this win will give him some confidence for tomorrow's match

Wonder if the Tunis withdrawal thing has anything to do with the volcano and travel problems associated with it ?
Just a guess
I saw the website from the Tunis site , and he is still on the list , but obviously it has not been updated . I was just checking for any news . Oh well
does seem a strange decision ( barring the travel issues ) since he will be losing the points from Rome and he could use some to replace them .
guess we will just have to wait for an explanation

Cloudygirl

well he is playing Bordeaux which is the same week as madrid still weird though.

I would have thought if it was anything to do with travel he would wait until nearer the time. It's a bit weird and he stood a good chance of winning that which could have been 150 points.

scmom

nothing on the Rome site about a wild card
although that thought was a big stretch

I have no idea why he has decided to withdraw from Tunis cause you are right, the travel thing could totally change by the time he needs to be in that city
a mystery , I guess
we may never know

hi all :wavey: I was there.
:wavey: Enjoy the tourney and encourage Richie!

i dont get the tunis thing either.
He has been playing a tourney every week since February:

Buenos Aires, Acapulco, IW, Sunrise Miami, Casablanca, MC, Barcelona, even if he lost early often, this must have been quite exhausting, I perfectly understand the break. He is not likely to get WCs for either Madrid or Rome, for the first there are too many Spaniards around and Rome always prefers Italian players for WCs, as tehy would not get a chance elsewhere.

Perhaps he's not playing Tunis because he is anticipating a nice, long week in Barcelona.
Seriously, he needs to be confident and believe in his abilities. Every time he steps on the court, he needs to say to himself, "I'm better than him. I can 'win' him."

True, but compared to what I have seen in Monte Carlo and not only in the Berdych match, this was progress. After a first set in which he was rather dominated, he got things going in the second set, that forth smash attempt netted by Verdasco showed that he was up for it for a long time.

Cloudygirl
04-21-2010, 05:57 PM
He wasn't bad. He was missing on key points but they weren't wild misses and he was trying to play aggressively which is a good thing. What I didn't like was that last service game his first two points were awful, and it isn't a done deal ever against Verdasco because he is a bit headcasey. He should have made him serve out the match and stayed mentally on court for a bit longer. His forehand was still short and a bit of a liability but it wasn't bad.

I was away and got home in time to see the last 2 points, so thanks for the reports everyone. Ooh, his only df came at match point. That's bad, a case of nerves. And his 2nd serve percentage...ooh. On to the next tourney, wherever it may be.

I missed the first set. From what I saw in set 2, as I said he wasn't bad.

Points I didn't like
He gets caught out of position on his forehand, he also hits it too short, he was hitting too much to Verdasco's forehand, I felt once he got behind in a service game towards the end he wasn't fighting enough.

Things I did like
He was trying different things, playing aggressively, his backhand wasn't perfect but it was better than I've seen in a while and most of all he looked like he wasn't overly tired. Looked so much fitter today. I think Richard is always going to be headcasey so he will always be tight in the latter stages of a match and that is a liability so it is so important for him to have his fitness ok so he doesn't have two big flaws. Looks like Markus is fixing that.

I only saw the last two games of the first set :o and the last game of the second set so I really have no businees commenting on the match BUT I will because while it appears to have been MUCH better than whatever the hell he did with Berdych, it is still the SAME story as has been for ages - when things get tight (ie. 5-5) instead of stepping it up, he crumbles. I don't think he won a single point in the last two games of the first set and not being able to hold serve to at least make your opponent serve out the match is just another sign of how much he still has to work on the mental game.

HAving said all the above, I was pleasantly surprised to see that he went 7-5 with Verdasco and apparently fought back after being down a break in the first. Even in the few games I saw he was playing more aggressive which was great to see, even if he lost the games. He just somehow needs to learn how to keep up his intensity for 2, 3, 4 or even 5 sets! I can't imamgine it is a issue of stamina in a 2 set match and he didn't look tired so it has to be his adorable head.

Although I didn't see the match (thanks for another stream Immzb though, older posters will tell you that I have a "history" with streams, they never damn well work for me  ) just the score tells me that it was much more competitive than the last time they played, Richie won about three games in that one!

well - definitely looks like this was a competitive match from the scoreline
and so , playing a Spaniard in Spain on the clay , I think that is a pretty good result.
and a big improvement over the onesided score last time he played Verdasco - or Berdych for that matter
good to know he was out there fighting

More encouraging result than against Berdych. Still tons of work to do on his baseline game if he wants to win couple matches at French.
Not sure why he would withdraw from Tunis.. although withdrawing is better than tanking a challenger like he did in Sunrise.

You can stop voting for him in the Marca poll, he prefers to play Bordeaux anyway. In L'Equipe today:

Pascal Coville

First, the nice things. What do you think of the win over Andreev in the first round?
That I took the breakpoints when I needed to. Unlike today.

There also was that bad patch at 5-4 0-15 on Verdasco's serve, you had just won 8 out of the last 9 points, we thought you were having the edge and boom! two direct errors and you lose the next 8 points.
Yes, always the same consistency problem. I get all worked up then and the points are flying.

What can one do to become more consistent?
String wins together. I still need time to be back. I'm ranked around 40th in the Race. That's my average level, even though I sometimes play like a top 20. But I'm already playing better than last week against Berdych, for example. Verdasco is a bad draw right now.

When you step on the court against this kind of player, do you feel able to win?
Yes and no. I'm not already defeated, of course, but I know it's going to be tough.

Your schedule now...
One week rest, Belgrade and the Bordeaux Challenger.

What about the possible wild-card in Madrid?
I prefer to string wins together in Bordeaux than to play Nadal in Madrid. I belong to Bordeaux.

:topic: But he lost in the end. :o It must be as hard to be a hard-core fan of Juergen (which I am not, but I like his tennis), as for us. Juergen is a very talented leftie with an all-court game on all surfaces, but he can't close out matches. I have seen him too often lose after being up, most embarassing in the DC tie against Roddick a couple of years ago.

He will avoid Djokovic, Isner, Querrey & Wawrinka as the Top 4 Seeds have A BYE into Round 2.

I've been kinda looking forward to this week, knowing that he can't lose any points from now until September. He can still lose a few ranking spots if someone below him has a great week, but there's not a thing in the world anyone can do about it. It is what it is. From what he has said in his interviews, he knows exactly where he stands and what he needs to do. Now, it is up to him to do it! I've got to say not a bad Draw for Gasquet, probaly couldn't of asked for a better one IMO.

Hope he can deal with O.Rochus and then from there.....

I think it's quite a good draw, too.

Let's hope he is ready to Feel It this week. Bonne chance Richard. :yeah:

Rochus? Again?

At least he gave Rochus a beatdown last time they played, so he knows he can do that on clay. Not a terrible draw, I think he should make the QF and then Isner is winnable considering he has beaten him on indoor hard court. A good chance to get some points anyway.

Richard won't see a draw this easy for the rest of the year. He BETTER make something out of it.
