This is a good win. This Spaniard beat Almagro on clay this year and almost beat Nalbandian.. and given he went through qualies he is match tough and adjusted. Nice mental effort from Richard in third set.
I think Richard is playing well enough to present Berdych some problems.

Third set was alot better... but this should have been straights... I don't want to sound negative but I can't see him beating Berdych. Tomas played very well today and he was serving great.. hopefully Richard proves me wrong though.

First and third sets were good stuff with good focus and intensity (at least for him). When he went down 0-40 to start the 3rd, I thought I've seen this before and is wasn't good . But he kicked it up to hold and after that he seemed to regain his focus, intensity and confidence. Maybe he has ADD (attention deficit disorder).

Hope he builds on this and takes down Berdych next.

Berdych played Lopez who never knew how to play on clay.. It's another thing that Tomas' level is good right now after reaching Miami final, but this is clay and Richard played more on it this year and is in there with more than decent chance IMO>

As far as this match, I think winning in 3 is maybe even better than a straight set win, since Richard has struggled so much in 3 set matches since January. HE has lost a lot of close ones, this was good effort especially after 0-40 in first game. He wanted to prove his wild card was deserved and he did that at the very least.

ImmzB

Winning a match like that, after loosing the 2nd Set and then was down TBP in the 1st game in the 3rd, saved them and then again had kind of tough hold in his 2nd service game. When he broke, he stepped up his game. Again he was showing he wanted it...saying Allez, pumping his fists.

04-12-2010, 02:05 PM
Finally!! I was so nervous in the 2nd set, I could hardly watch, maybe he was too. As trying as the matches are for everyone, they really are good for him. He has to fight for it and not give up. He didn't lose his concentration, and the third set was much easier to watch. His body language was so much better. He just has to keep plugging away at it. I'm proud of him. On paper he should have won easily, but this guy was no pushover, by any means. So good luck against Berdych!!!
I really love this tournament. The whole atmosphere of it, the beautiful scenery, the hillsides, the Mediterranean, the red clay...oh, I would love to go to that part of the world someday.

I watched this match very nervously - but the first and third sets were great play from Richard . Just a bit of a lapse in concentration in the second there - And I will admit to a sinking feeling in my stomach when that happened. But I was so happy to see him fight his way out of those break points in the third , and then step it up . A good win against a clay specialist . Hope he can keep this up against Berdych.
Looked for Puschkin and her sign - but did not see it . Did see a man with a "richie go " sign , seated next to a woman waving a French flag .

now as for the rankings , while I get it in theory , I find it very disappointing that Richard GAINED points , virtually all the higher ranked players took the week off , and yet he still dropped in the rankings . That sucks

I watched the first two sets but had to leave (I took my kids to see "Nanny Mcphee and the Big Bang", yes I am just as glam as Puschkin and her trip to MC ) and I really thought he was going to lose the third, having seen it happen before but so glad to be proved wrong.

MC report day 3:

Julien again already at work when I arrived, watched the two German Philipps practising, and followed Jim's disastrous start against Golubev, interrupted this to see Richard practice, Gabriel and Eric there, he looked more dynamic than yesterday, but maybe it was an illusion; it was not JWT on the other side; but Robert. No special moment when he left the court; there were quite some people around, but I recognised his Mum and adressed her, had a five minutes chat with her, which I will keep private, only one thing: When I asked her if the banner would nerve or disturbe Richard she said "au contraire" and encouraged me to show my continous support, went back to Jim to see the desastrous end; fulfilled a misson for Fran watching Petzschner.

I won't describe Richard's match, but believe me without me and some other enthusiasts out there who got the crowd going, he would have lost this, in the second set he hardly sat down during change-overs; rushed back to the court as if he wanted this to be over as soon as possible. He returned to his usual grip change routine in the third set and it was much better.

I shouted and clapped, showed the banner at every changeover, but the cameras were on my side - opposite of the players, anyway I did not bring the banner to get on TV, ;) and Richard opposite of me must have seen it all the time, he was interviewed on court, but the mike was so poor that I did not hear what he said, closed the day with a very good Ferrero crushing a poor Granollers.

Puschkin, I also thank you for being there for the rest of us. Here's hoping you have the most enjoyable trip to Monte Carlo you have ever had.
I just read the transcript from the presser yesterday (on MC website). He said he was too excited and had 10,000 things in his head in the second set, probably why he lost focus. He also admitted that IW and Miami are not that special to him, but Monte Carlo is. I knew I had read somewhere that he doesn't particularly like to play in the US. He also talked about his coaching situation, and how he and Eric are very close, but Eric deserves his life at home in Paris. Interesting read.

I wonder if Richard can not live without Deblicker or if Deblicker has no decency to completely leave the picture. Richard needs completely new voice. I have said it for 3 years now, as long as I see Deblicker in the stands, it just won't happened for Richard. He is a good fan of his game and a cheerleader but he has done nothing for his game. Richard really badly needs someone full time, who will make him work hard and fight no matter the score.

I didn't expect him to win, obviously he didn't either, and thus the absolute BEATDOWN. Where's that psychologist - some how he has got to get some belief that he can play with the top guys. Berdych seemed to have found it so guess it's not a hopeless cause.

Poor Puschkin, she had about 4 points to cheer for.

We don't really know what Eric says to Richie but I agree that it is time for a BRAND NEW voice

 Richie - know this is tougher on him than any of us.

Moving on ...

He spoke about his coaches in his press conference here: http://www.monte-carlorolexmasters.com/News/Tennis/2010/Interview-Transcripts/Richard-Gasquet-Monday.aspx

I think its a good point you made about Eric, but lets face it, Richard could hire 20 new coaches but at the end of the day the only way he will ever achieve anything is if he changes himself. It has to come from within. I do not know him personally obviously but to me he just doesn't seem to care half the time (I know that sounds harsh). He has all the talent in the world and if he really WANTED to be the best and he WORKED to be the best he could BE the best. It's so frustrating because I've followed him since he was young and I always thought he'd be such a successful player when he's in his twenties.. so its hard to watch him keep losing and losing again and again.

I guess he is only 23 and there is still hope... but it needs to be HIM that changes and HIM that wants to win tournaments...

i think to gasquet , Deblicker is like a safety blanket and will never have a good word against him which at times i do think he needs a coach who would give me a kick up the backside & push him .

I bet Richard would not dare to lose like this in front of Marcus, but with Eric there, he seems to know that once things don't go well, then well it's ok to pack your bags and basically go home early. Richard can't possibly have a father figure on the court, he needs someone who will be very honest and very critical of him. Deblicker as far as I know doesn't even comment during his practices. I have watched few of them and he is just there to hand him the balls and say Allez once in a while. Maybe he also gives him hugs after performances like these.

Maybe he needs to fire everyone and just try to do everything on his own.. maybe then the nature will take over and he will play more freely. I know one thing: Deblicker must leave. In just 2 months with Marcus, his forehand already looks a lot more solid than it was since 2005. His backhand looks very unreliable now, but that is because he is trying to take it earlier and hit little flatter more often and that is not easy.. if Deblicker stays, he won't do anything, his game would look exactly like it was in 06 and 07 (with less and less confidence) and with that type of game he can't be top 30 player anymore. Players have adjusted. Now, he needs to adjust and improve.

I think sometimes he cares too much it makes him nervous. I often think he rushes through things, that's a sure sign of nervousness. He needs a lot of patience and some serious guidance right now. He Heals Me lyrics
India Arie

I like this song , I want to give him and u all my Richard fan :)

He heals me
Told him my biggest secret
And he told me four.
He smiled at me and said that makes me love more
And then he made me laugh
And I knew it was a sign
That he was a man,
That I wanted in my life

And with every passing day
I feel more and more of that way

He heals me
He knows the real me
And he accepts me, he never hurts me
He heals me
He knows the real me
And he accepts me, he never hurts me
He heals me,
He heals me

I can play him songs, all through the night,
And he will listen to every line,
And even when I’m wrong, he is still kind
He chooses his words wisely when he tells me I’m not right.

And yes he is a beautiful man,
But he is also a beautiful friend

He heals me
He knows the real me
And he accepts me, he never hurts me
He heals me
He knows the real me
And he accepts me, he never hurts me
He heals me

The moment that we met, he made me smile.
He has so much compassion in his eyes
I have no idea, how long he’ll be here
A season or a lifetime, forever or a year
But for the first time in my life I’m not worried about the future
Because we have such a wonderful time when we’re together
However things turn out, it’s all right
Cause he’s already changed my life.

He heals me
He knows the real me
And he accepts me, he never hurts me
He heals me
He knows the real me
And he accepts me, he never hurts me
He heals me..........

I didn't see the match because of Sky choosing to flood us with Murray, but the thing that worries me is that he seems to be in a rush to get off court when things aren't going his way. This simply will not do! This was mentioned yesterday and today by other posters who saw this match, have mentioned it again today. Losing and losing horribly, I can accept, I don't like it but I can accept it, but just throwing the towel in and sloping off court is unacceptable. I am the most patient and supportive of fans like most of us, but this attitude just fills me with despair. If that doesn't change, it makes me worry for the rest of his career.
I really hope that puschkin can put a positive spin on today.

I know he has always been like this for the most part and has to "feel" it but I don't think he can indulge himself like that anymore. He has to dig in and fight whatever the weather. His ranking and where it's likely to head really worries me. Having said that, I do think as long as he gets a decent draw at Wimbly he is capable of a really good run there. But that is where the ranking plays a part.

MC Report Day 4: a very mixed day as you will see.

Julien as usual at work when I arrived, practising with JWT. I met a nice couple from rgnet and we watched Juergen defeating PHM together. I was a little late for Richard's practice, Eric and Gabriel there, Gabriel doing the coaching. I heard: "You have to speak to yourself- POWER." After practice he signed a lot and then he walked down the stairs, which were empty as Nadal and Murray were practising at the same time He saw me and said "bonjour, ca va?" Take it guys and girls; he said it to me; not me to him. I was so stunned, I could not even reply, just smiled sheepishly. He must think that I am a complete idiot. :o

Back to the court de princes to watch Llodra destroying the hopes of the mainly Italian crowd and Fognini. Djokovic practised with Nalbandidan then, but it was too crowded to see anything, I settled for Troicki-Kubot, the latter has the nicer game, but Troicki won, then the borig JWT-Almagro match and finally it was time for Richard, by then it was late and cold, no athmosphere on the court and you have seen it all, Richard was never in that match, there is not more to say.

No I don't expect him to say anything of the sort, don't be silly, but the "I have bags of time attitude" concerns me, rightly or wrongly.
And whilst I accept the pressues he has been under, I work with kids who have had to endure far, far worse (although haven't had to endure the media spotlight admittedly) so I occasionally grow a little tired of hearing about it. It must be tough but he either let's it rule him and affect the rest of his life and his career or he doesn't. Just because I feel the need to "get real" every now and again, does not stop me being a fan though.
The minute anybody besides yourself directs any criticism towards him, you are like a guard dog and it gets somewhat tiresome. I really do not say anything negative that often.

I think Vicky has a point actually (about the him using his age as an excuse thing). How many players play past 30. Unless you are Santoro, he's practically half way through his career. He's not a kid anymore.

I feel like it's an excuse now and that at some point down the line he's stopped believing in himself and unless he gets that self belief back, it's never going to happen for him and it's a huge shame because he has the talent and the game for a great career.

I think you misinterpreted me or I was not clear. I don' t question the fact that there are kids out there who had to endure tougher things than Richard, I was just arguing against the notion that "he is immature and thinking of himself as a kid".

what a disappointing match today
He was simply overpowered in that one
Just points out what confidence will do for a player - because , Berdych has had more than his share or WTF losses when he should have won - and has finally gotten a few good wins and is on a roll. I am gonna take this as a sign that Richard can do the same thing . I refuse to believe he can never recover from mess of last year. I think he is right - it will take time . But agree , that at almost 24 he does not have as much time as he used to .
I have no opinion on coaching - Eric vs Markus - don't really have enough knowledge of either man to judge. But I do know that Eric seems to be a gentle fatherly fellow and they have a good relationship - and there is something to be said for being happy with the people you work with. He never looked happy with Peyre , who was a kick ass sort of guy - and nothing good came of it . What little I saw of Markus dealing with Richard , he seemed very positive - so I thought that was a good thing. So I think I will wait and see a little bit longer before i start yelling for a change .

deep down , I am a bit sad that Richard says he does not care about Indian Wells - as I think of it as "my " tournament where I get to see him - but I totally understand that an event so close to his home would mean more to him .
And Puschkin , so glad he spoke to you ! That is sweet - he remembered the young lady who was so supportive of him ! He does notice and remember his fans - he always remembers my daughter , year after year - and talks to her every time .

I didn't see the match, but aren't you all being a bit too hard on him ? I mean, Berdych reached a final in a masters series two weeks ago, beating many excellent players. So what, we all know that Richard isn't back at the top of his game yet, so it was a bit wishful thinking to believe he was going to give a beatdown to an excellent and young player who has never played that well before. I'm pretty happy with his result in the first match and the fact that he's back to be motivated and willing to do everything it takes to get it back.

About being 24, sure he isn't 18 anymore, but look at Federer, what he went through at the beginning of his career, being so talented but unable to get his mind together, and everyone was saying how he would just be a perpetual disappointment, and look at what he became. It's true that a tennis career is very short, but ten or fitfteen years is still a long time. Some blossom at 18, others at 25. What I think is that Richard got enough bad luck now for the rest of his life, so he can only go up now ;)

04-14-2010, 11:19 AM
I agree, Keijan. I often think of Roger. The first time I saw him play, DC vs US, I thought he had a beautiful game and so much talent, but a lot of things still going on in his head. It took a little time, not too much, but look at him! There are a lot of similarities between them. I don't want to compare, I think they have been compared enough already, but most of you know what I'm talking about. Apparently, Richard needs more time to deal with some things, mainly other people's expectations of him. John McEnroe once said that tennis players need to have a very short memory, forget about a bad point or a bad match you have just played and move on. That reminds me of the words of the Apostle Paul..."forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead..." (Philippians 3:13) All of us have had to deal with things in the past, some more than others. Believe me, I know. It may be dealing with criticism, negativity or a thorn in our side that is holding us back. All have been blessed with gifts; it is up to us to use them, not letting anything stand in our way. God bless you all.

I speak from very personal experience. I do not mean to offend anyone. I was just trying to say exactly that...move on, go forward, get on with it.

Just say that then, don't quote the bible, this is not the place. (But you sure have a good knowledge of it for a non-christian person)

Yeah, Vicky that's something annoying about him, he's not a hundred percent there in every of his matchs. But there are many matches where he gives his everything and still loses, so, once in a while, I suppose it's ok to give up (especially in this case where he had no way to win.) Anyway on to BCN :)

MC report day 5:

Not Julien who was already at work when I arrived, but Juergen. Some Italians passing by could not decide whether he was Volandri or not.

Watched Djokovic practising against Troicki, then I saw I convincing Juanqui defeating Becker. I was in time for Richard's practice with Jo, 45 minutes, more intense than yesterday, no Deblicker. While Jo was interviwed, Richard continued with Gabriel for another 15 minutes, high BHs... He looked good, motivated, not dejected at all, smiling during practice which was certainly the toughest I had seen so far.

A bunch of Italian kids almost prevented my daily contact. This time it was me adressing him and giving him a sign of encouragement, he looked back and replied with the usual ca va?

Watched my compatriote losing to Petzschner and walked around while Nadal was playing, I greatly enjoyed the first set of Kohlschreiber-Murray. :p

Met my French friends from rgnet and then it was doubles time; Both started poorly, Richard missing volleys and Jo his jumping smashes, it was particularly Granollers playing well. In the second set they started to play like a real doubles team, they were twice a break down, but managed to get back, the match tiebreak was really good, Richie finding his grove on the volleys scoring four direct winners, including a 207 km ace for 8-5.

I would have MUCH rather seen this match than RIchie's yesterday. No not evil at all.

Glad to see Richie won a doubles match. Even If I'm not particularly fond of Tsonga, playing doubles with him might do Richie some good - just as long as he doesn't start dancing around.

Thanks for the news Puschkin - glad to hear that Markus was working with him and he didn't decide that Richie was too much of a "challenge" for him :)

a good win in the doubles - and glad that his volleys were the winning shots
He missed a good number of those yesterday , so hitting a few winners has got to feel good

Puschkin - really enjoying your on site reports - and that you are getting a chance to see Richard and interact a bit every time .

and like others here , I also got a good chuckle out of watching Murray stink it up - He is just not one of my favorites .

I actually really like Tsonga - I think his on court persona , though brash , is entertaining - and glad that he and Richard are playing together . Bet it is good tennis to watch when they work together . As far as the dance moves - well if that little backwards choo choo dance thing that Richard did in his match last year against Gonzo in Australia is any indication - he could use some dance lessons from Tsonga :) It was awfully cute - in his own little awkward way , but ... It could use some work

Good players make their own luck. Some players get seriously injured and still come back stronger than ever.. some players get knee operations and get back to number 1.. now that's being unlucky AND still prevail.. Richard has NOT been unlucky.. He made horrible choices in his life, such as hanging out with drug addicts in clubs and paying for it dearly.. but he can't blame anyone but himself. In fact he got SO lucky, he did not get 2 years and should be thanking his luck.. You talk about him being motivated.. how do you know that? Just because he says so? Or his team says so? I stopped believing him (what he says in interviews) or his team long time ago. I don't think they ever talk about true issues. I only trust what I see from a player on court.. so far this season he has fought in some matches, but did not show up in others.. against Berdych it was disgraceful performance on so many levels and I don't care how well Berdych is playing now (btw, he lost his next match), I know he is only average on clay. Richard did not think (change any strategy), fight or did anything on the court. It was a spit in the face to all his fans that stood by him for so many years of criticism and trouble. He needs to look in the mirror and ask himself if tennis is really what he wants to do moving forward.

Yeah, you think they would manage, but I was looking at lequipe and eurosport, said they had forfeited their match because Jo is hurting and didn't want to risk anything. Yup but that is because that is what the Monte Carlo website says. l'equipe and eurosport say otherwise. They might be biased and crappy but l'equipe don't usually get stuff like this wrong.

l'equipe says

MC report day 6:

Headed to the practise courts upon arrival, Juanqui warming up with Robredo, good spirits, unfortunately I could not understand their jokes.

Richard practising 1 and 1/2 hours with Schwank, Markus there, no Deblicker, mainly groundies, first FH CC, then BH CC which was the better dish.;) Then they practised finishing points, Richard got frustrated, even threw his raquet, but it was a "soft" throwing. I left him alone today, he was totally wet and I am sure his only thought was for a shower, I also felt he was not in the greatest of moods.

Watched Juergen and Youzhny warm up and wished Juergen good luck, finally entered centre court where to my greatest joy Juanqui beat Tsonga, I had even written Juanqui on the other side of the Richie-banner, was already doubting the doubles. :o

Poor match between Novak and Wawrinka, Novak speaking French in his interview and got huge cheers for it, his accent is not bad, ;) Then it was announced that JWT injured himself slightly in his matchagainst JCF and gave wo for the doubles, everyone is invited to his own opinion on this, but my views about JWT certainly did not get better after this.

If Jo is genuinely worried he is slightly injured I don't blame him, but do you think that isn't the case?

Well, at least there was no sign of an injury to see and in today's L'Equipe his coach boasted about his physical condition:

Après sa victoire contre Almagro il n'a pas eu besoin d'une récuperation spéciale; Franchement; au niveau physique où il est maintenant, ça a été un match normale. Il encaisse........ until the next defeat.:o

I tried - at least my votes were counted .

sorry that he and Jo had to withdraw from the doubles. I cannot say that I blame Jo if he is really hurt - but it is disappointing , nonetheless.
Perhaps that is why Richard was so frustrated on the practice court as well .
Watching him toss a racquet is kind of fun - he did it in IW - a good one right at the end of the match
Not quite Safinesque , but I would give it a 7 on a scale of 1- 10.
