I think that's funny how he always talks about other players being tall.
:topic: of course many players are taller than Richard, but in reality he is taller than he looks on TV, though I doubt the 1,85 on the ATP-profile, it is more like 1,82 I would say.

As for the coach, I will check in Monte Carlo. But if tennisc is right about Deblicker, I really wonder what this means.

They are all tall to me. I walked past Del Potro last year and I am tiny compared to him. My head didn't even come up to the stripe on his top.

Rafa and Richard are meant to be the same height but i think Rafa is shorter than the ATP say. I've never seen Richard in real life so not sure about his height.

jeez - I hope Richard does not draw Rafa in Monte Carlo
at least not until he has gotten a few matches in
But , am looking forward to hearing your reports from the site, Puschkin

I wonder why Richard always does refer to these guys as tall. It's not like he is short - Even if he is not the 6'1 the atp lists ( and I don't believe he is ). I would put him at roughly 5'11 , almost 6 feet. My daughter is about 5'7 and she reaches him right about his ears , so he is about 4 inches or so taller than she . He is way taller than oh say - Rochus or Ferrer , who are smaller than advertised . Hanescu is quite tall though - and thin - much like a string bean . As for Del Potro , he is just hugely tall . And unattractive . I always think of the butler , Lurch , on the old Addams Family show when I see that boy . Mean ,I know , but I cannot help myself.

About the coach who is with him in Casablanca- I know Markus coaches another player on tour, and I don't believe that he is playing there this week - so maybe Markus is with the other player ( whose name I cannot remember ) and Deblicker is there with Richard. Whoever is there - something is working !

It is only appropriate that he puts up a stunning performance when I watch him live. Up to now he never did something spectacular, so I am rather doubtful if I could qualify as his lucky charm. But every series has an end..... ;)

Only Deblicker is in Casa, Markus will be there for MC:

He says he's not at his best level yet, but he serves quite well, he doesn't make too many errors and he feels better physically. The conditions are very fast and the court is slippery. There's nothing like playing matches, you can train 18 hours a day, you won't progress the same way as when you play real matches.

(As for him calling other players tall, I don't have any example, does he use the word "tall" in English or are you talking about translations of his statements? It might also be a confusion with French sometimes, it's the same word in French to say "a tall player" and "a great player".)

So it is only Eric with him. They are doing something right this week. I think he was glad to get out of the US and back to playing on clay.
Thanks for the video links. The quality is great. I didn't mind watching some of the match again!
Beth, interesting observations...the ATP must rely on a player's opinion of how tall they are. So many are listed at 6'1", clearly Roger is taller than Rafa, Rafa is taller than Richard, but the info says they are the same height. Rochus is listed as 5'6", but Richard is a head taller than he is. Hanescu IS tall, indeed, but shouldn't give Richard too much trouble. I hope. Also hoping for a beautiful match again today. He needs to win a tournament badly, and he's right, there is nothing like playing matches, real matches.

I am so glad that we have people on this board who speak fluent French. It is such a help. The translation of great and tall makes perfect sense now. It is way more likely that Richard would credit Hanescu as a great player ( whether we agree or not :)) than to call him a tall player . So much gets lost in translation !

As for the height observations , it is one of the benefits of staying at the hotel where so many of the players stay at a tournament . You see them up close - and away from the courts. And get a little glimpse into what they are like away from the spotlight. I have no idea who does the stats on height, weight , etc - but most likely they take the players word for it. You are right - Federer ,Nadal and Gasquet are all listed as the same height . I would say that both Fed and Nadal appear taller than Richard. Nadal tends to stoop his shoulders - just watch when he is shaking hands at the net with other players - that gives the illusion of his being shorter than Federer. He is , in actuality , a very big man, maybe even taller than the 6'1 that is listed - way taller than all the men who are in his entourage ( Roig, his trainer , and his publicist - all of whom accompany him to IW every year.)
Hope I can be back to see some of Richard's match later today
but if not - good luck Richard - keep up the great play

I am kind of used to his return of serve, it is what it is.. but in this match he is missing way too many second serves which is fairly uncharacteristic. Richard needs to win this close match to gain much needed confidence.. you can tell when point is important, Hanescu plays them better so far. Confident Richard would never miss that backhand pass on breakpoint.

Cloudygirl

Is he mentally already in Monte Carlo. You know he is playing shit when the forehand is better than the backhand.

Conclusions, he looks a lot better on clay than he did in South America. He has a lot to work on though and one of the biggest things is confidence and how to play break points.

Well he looks physically better which is good at least he didn't look like he was going to drop dead after 2 hours. His forehand looks like he has worked on it quite a bit. Again pretty good. Mentally he still needs a lot more work though. He also showed a bit of emotion on court which I like.

He should have won this but it wasn't a disaster. Hope he goes straight to Monte Carlo and get some practice in there as the court speed is different.

I guess the player who was willing to go for his shots more won today.. Richard is still mentally just not ready to make any impact at all, even when serving this well. Deep down inside he really still has no confidence. I just hope this loss won't set him back for another 4-5 first round losses. More important tournaments are coming up, but this was great opportunity to win his first event in what seems been forever.

Positives: Served great this whole week, forehand looks much better, although he lost first set because of it.
Negatives: Backhand completely disappeared from second set on.. when he went for it, he either missed badly or mis-hit. Don't know what happened but from that point on, it was hard seeing him winning this match, when his best shot is not there. Not aggressive enough on breakpoints... when you are 1 out of 9 on breakpoints, you can't expect to beat anyone, but some of the weakest players only.

Cloudygirl

I completely missed the first set and between a live stream that kept freezing and a zillion intereputions at work (imagine people expecting me to work when Richie is on!) I didn't get to see much of the last two sets but from the little I saw, I was pleased: 1) forehand looked BETTER 2) serving very well 3) mentally staying focused and maintaining intensity, 4) didn't look exhausted at the end of 3 sets.

It is too bad about the break points, the few I saw he appeared to be going for it and I would much rather see that than just push it back in play. going for it didn't work this time but at least he went for his shots and that made me happy to see. However it sounds like there were other break points where he was much less aggressive. I suppose after you miss a few going for it, you pull back a bit.

Well guess this shows he still has some work to do to beat even Top 40 players but overall I was encouraged by his focus and attitude. He still is a bit shaky on the big points but the only way to get through it to play LOTS of big points (and win them).

Good luck Richie in MC. and Puschkin hope you get to see a full week of Richie in MC - enjoy. I'll be super swamped with work next week so unless he makes it to the semis I'll miss him completely.

from what I saw (end of 2nd set, and 3rd set) he was never aggressive (except maybe last service game), then it's not a matter of break points

it seems that his new coach wants him to practice grinding and grinding again

Ah at least he's good physically and he fought

But Hanescu was just the better player  although he gave second set with errors, and gave break points in the 3rd also with errors. Gasquet just didn't deserve to win playing like that, it's not a matter of break points in my opinion.

so sad that Richard did not win this one
I fear that I jinxed him - I was home for the early part of the match and just had to watch
He was doing so well , in the two previous matches without me - I should have left well enough alone .Still - I was only there for 3 games ! Could I have been that unlucky !

But from what I read here , sounds like he had his chances. I believe that with match play and wins over early round opponents , he will find his way back to winning . So on to Monte Carlo Hope the good history there and Puschkin can bring him some good luck !

He won two matches in a row - that is what 45 points ( ?) he did not have - there are some positives here .

This sounds as if Richard scored no winners himself which is not true. But I tend to agree with you, Richard did not lose a match in which he scored more points than his opponent as it happened more than once this year. He was poor on returning, particularly on the second serve, and Hanescu did play well on certain occasions, However, Richard put up a fight until the middle of the third set and his serve was very good inspite of the number of DFs.

How was that Tie-break a choke by the way? He was never really in position to win it or even take an advantage. It was just a terrible tie-break.

Frankly Hanescu was just pretty much the better player out there. He was dominating the baseline exchanges, he was often more consistent, he looked like he had a gameplan... When he started throwing lots of errors between the middle of the second and the beginning of the third he was behind Gasquet, but he managed to survive that and won the match pretty logically in the end, even though Gasquet had chances.

Not really, I mean obviously he was the better player in the end, hitting huge serves when he needed them, playing a better TB, etc., but for the most part of the first set he was barely winning anything on his second serves and barely anything on Richards either first or second after that first game. That's not a definition of dominating baseline rallies. Just with a decent return today, this would have looked very different. Mind you, this was not close to the best Hanescu can play, so I'm not sure it's very comforting even from my perspective. I don't even want to go into tendency to have too passive patches, I feel like a broken record on that account.
In the final analysis, I'd say confidence is what he lacks the most ATM, so here's to hoping he gets a decent draw in MC and gets some more wins under his belt.

Hmm I did not say that Hanescu is A better player than Gasquet, I said it seemed to me he was THE better player during this match.

I didn't think he was playing that well in the first set, he certainly didn't seem to win virtually every point on Hanescu's second serve like oranges says at least. In fact I distinctly remember him not even getting his return past the net or inside the baseline on quite a few second serves.

The first set before the tie-break was fairly even I thought? Slight advantage for Gasquet maybe who had chances in maybe two service games and Hanescu in only one? That certainly don't seem enough to automatically make losing the tie-break a "choke". He hit enough double faults during the match that it doesn't seem so strange that he hit one during the breaker, and he seems to do that a lot these days anyway. He just played badly and that's it.

So all in all a relatively balanced match where the player dominating play and being more solid on important points won. Had Gasquet had a better return of serve this day and been more solid in general, he would have been the better player (and in fact probably would have won), but as it is, he just wasn't. Having seen the match, the result and the score don't really seem choking to me?

a qualifier - well that is always a mixed bag - just depends on who it is . But I think Gasquet has played enough clay matches right now , that anyone coming through qualies won't have any match experience on him. I agree that is a pretty decent draw . At least he is not in Nadal's half - and he did not draw any of the Spanish clay specialists like Ferrero or Ferrer or Almagro for a first round match up
So hopefully , it will be a good week for him
Allez!

As for Hanescu ,not sure if he is as talented a player - but I saw the guy give Federer fits in IW - so he is clearly playing well lately . There is no shame in losing to a good solid player. He did not quit . He had his chances and could not convert so he lost . It happens . Hopefully , he will get the confidence to take those chances in the future. I just have to believe it is coming . He will have a break through soon.

Watched the first set of qualies Koubek-Luczak, poor tennis, back to the practice court; Mathieu against a guy I did not know; nothing special, when he left huge crowds because Novak and Murray entered for the second time, I fled again, watched Youzhny against Kohlschreiber; that was nice, BH beauties from both, by then it was 5.00 pm, the Spaniards arrived: Verdasco, Ferrer, Lopez. I agree with everything Simplet said ;)

Hanescu IS actually a good player, regular top-50, and regularly good results on clay. That was not obvious for everyone but Federer actually had to play very well against him in Australia and in a lesser extent in Indian Wells, and it was necessary.

But of course meaning that he was the better player just means on the day.

Of course confidence is Gasquet's main problem, but not only on break points and in tie-breaks : the fact that he's so little offensive is also an evidence that he lacks confidence.

When Gasquet grinds he plays too short : that's why Hanescu dominated the game imo.

As for Monte-Carlo, if he played well, that would be a VERY good draw with a chance to go far in the tournament. The question is "where is his game and his confidence ?" His physical is there, that's good, as for the other two I don't think so.[/B]

As for Puschkin who hadn't understood when I said that Markus made Gasquet practice grinding and that it was not good for Wimbledon,

I mean I didn't hear anything from Markus but I just see that he has played a lot on clay since they are together, and his game doesn't look offensive at all.

He isn't adapting his game to be more offensive as he has done several times in the past, rather the opposite. However I think that if one day he has very good results, it will be with this style of play which suits him better, esp on grass and indoors. It's a pity that he lost to Gonzalez in Australia with this kind of game which just suited him and which he should have kept on

only an opinion ;)

MC 2nd day report:

The only player who was already sweating when I arrived just before 10.00 was Julien, otherwise not much going on that early; I walked around, just to be at the right place at the right time when Richard took the court at 11.00 for a session with JWT. Timing was good as the weather was still nice at that time, the warmup was unspectacular, Eric talking a lot; yes, Eric, no sign of Markus. Then they played a set; JWT bashing like maniac, 2-0 up quickly, but immediate rebreak, too much bashing, I doubt that Richard gave it his all though; his serve was by far not at Casablanca level; Jo broke again and they had to stop, as the next players were entering. Quite some crowds to watch tihs, few Italian kids though; maybe they all watched Bolelli losing. :haha: Richard left first and signed a lot; he is still popular, Jo signed less and passed by with lots of kids rushing after him; Richard still stopped for everyone interested in him. As soon as I realised he would go down all the stairs I rushed to the end of the stairs, unfolded my banner and said nothing. He looked at me, raised his right hand as if to say hallo, smiled and said "merci". It was a nice moment.

I feel he got the support behind my action or at least that is what I want to believe. The rest of the day is quickly told, it got colder and a very unpleasant wind came up. I had to walk around not to freeze. And on CC it is particularly gusty with the wind.

Nadal was playing, but I did not even try to watch, too large crowds, after that hardly anyone practising. I guess the players were all in the hotel sauna or at another warm spot. When it started to drizzle, I left;

I had had my moment, nothing better could come that day. :D

"Richard like in 2005" (in French) and the damned thing is a little too huge to hold in comfortably.;)

Puschkin are you with anyone or are you on your own? I'm so glad you got to see him. It must be funny to actually see someone in the flesh that you devote so much time to. If I ever saw him, I think I'd be pinching myself thinking "is that really him?"
thanks so much xx

I'll be so upset if I don't see him this year. Wimbledon was so upsetting last year with no Richard or Rafa.

Thanks for the reports, Puschkin. the banner sounds great, good that you were able to show it to him and he appreciated it. Keep sending your positive vibes his way and I'm sure it will help him have a nice tournie. :p

Allez Richard tomorrow, glad he is not too early, should be able to watch at that time if it's on around lunchtime.
Time to make waves in Monte Carlo. :yeah:

sounds good - from Court Centrale there is some small hope of Richard actually appearing on my television
as I think the Tennis Channel is broadcasting the tournament here
off to check the schedules and set my tivo - just in case

I will look for your sign , Puschkin
Hope you see a good match

I am just happy that Richard is playing again regularly . I know what you mean about tournaments not being the same without him. Wimbledon was a complete downer for me last year - between Rafa and Richard both being gone . I found myself cheering for Roddick - and I almost never do that . Don't know why , he has just never been one of my favorites - but last year ... that loss was just so heartbreaking in the final , I really felt for him.

Sky are broadcasting MC so I'll be able to watch him tomorrow too. It seems ages since I last watched him.
Beth, I actually got to go to Wimbledon fir the first time last year and although I was still really excited to go (I actually got choked up walking through main gates, I couldn't believe I was actually there and was going to get to watch matches live) it still wasn't as good as it should have been. I kept feeling something or someone was missing and at that time we didn't know what the outcome of the hearing would be so it was a bit flat in soneways. I won't get to go this year because of work, such a shame.

I think I watched some of him playing a first round match at wimbledon last year. He beat Almugro this year on clay so it's by no means a done deal.

Don't worry if you can't manage it btw
