tsonga, cilic, roddick, soderling and djokovic don't stand much of a chance, imo.

Federer I feel (ok, hope) will put in an effort here so he can defend Madrid's points early but I guess it will depend on the draw. Rafa's suddenly the overwhelming favourite, such a contrast to the results of the IW poll.. he'll probably win one of the two but idk if he'll do the double.

Rafa being favourite surprises me.

He has beaten top 20 players to get tto the IW semis, but no top 10s, and he is suddenly favourite to win a masters tournament he could never win in his prime???

Federer FTW.

According to what I've read, Rafa called his singles semi-final loss an 'accident'. That tells me that he actually expected more of IW. ;)
His doubles win is great of course, but in all, a consolation prize imho.

Of course he expected more. Of all hard court masters Indian wells is suited best for Nadal. It's VERY slow and it's in the desert. It's no accident he already won it twice before.

If he struggled in IW I just don't see him winning Miami, which is much faster. There are just too many players that could trouble/beat him on fast HC.

In Miami it will be most likely Fed imo...unless he really has no motivation to play.

Of course, indeed. I was merely replying to a poster who thought he'd done pretty well. He did, objectively speaking (a Masters SF is of course nothing 'bad') - but I have no doubts that he actually expected to defend his title in IW, which he sort-of admitted himself.

If he struggled in IW I just don't see him winning Miami, which is much faster. There are just too many players that could trouble/beat him on fast HC.

Rafa didn't struggle in IW - he was playing very well, at some 90% of his capability on this surface. He commented that with his level of playing, he should have been able to indeed win the title. If anything, his 'problem' right now is mental - concentration problems when it matters most. :(

In Miami it will be most likely Fed imo...unless he really has no motivation to play.

Fed is very motivated to play and pick up as much points as he's capable of, as there is a very important record for him at stake. It's not a matter of him 'not caring', it's a matter of him losing more often nowadays as he's simply not as good anymore as he was in his prime - especially in bo3-format matches. So I have yet to see whether he gets this, as there apparently are plenty of players capable of catching him in these kind of matches nowadays.

I'm not convinced. You cannot say Rafa looks better than Fed (AO champion) or even Murray/Novak. He beat Berdych and Isner, which are good on their day but but 8/10 times even 60% Nadal will beat them. The highest seed he faced was Berdych at no.20! Nadal is far from convincing atm. He played 2-3 good matches in IW before being taken out by Ljubicic. I remember comentators in Paris saying the same about Rafa after he beat Tsonga and then he loses badly to Djoko.

As it stands, imo, there is no heavy favoutire between top 4, at least in masters series tournaments. Fed/Nadal/Murray/Djoko are all out of form at the moment. I think Fed might clinch Miami, but it won't be a surprise AT ALL if someone outside top 4 takes it.

that's right, he is just no where near his best, not even close........his backhand, slice, serve looked ordinary in indian wells and it's very much understandable because he is coming back from a 2 month injury break.......

he keeps saying that he is feeling well and playing well because he is trying to be positive and not lose hope.......until he gets his ass on to clay and starts training, he will win nothing........

There were good things going on at Wimbledon last year, but he seems to have reverted back to this incredibly bad pushing. It's just extraordinarily puzzling as to how one could get away from what got you to number 1 in the world at the age of 21

I think he will, but regardless he is just so much better suited to play this pushing style than Andy R.
That's another thing that's incredibly confusing. Why Andy R. chooses to play like this when he lacks the returning, footspeed, and anticipation of Andy M. It's like he figured out the style of play that least suits his talents and decided to play that way from now on :o
