First and third set were ok by Roger, the second set was sooo bad

Amazing, and hilarious, that Federer was 21/24 at the net but lost 2 of those 3 points in the tiebreak with terrible volley errors. Hanescu was completely on top of him from the middle of that set onwards, punishing his second serve seemingly at will, but then he seemed to fall in love with the backhand dropshot in the final set despite the fact that none of them worked, and he went down rather tamely in the end.

Hanescu

Not too bad

The ratio of Winners to unforced looks good but in context, I think 25 of those 36 came out of the second set alone.

And congrats to Hanescu for taking his first set ever off Federer.

Well, Feds got the job done eventually, but just as it goes for the other Top Three Guys - he'll have to raise his level of playing to have any chance of getting the title at IW.

Kudos to Hanescu for playing a great 2nd set. :yeah:

Fedsie dear, get some new contacts please - your challenges are getting embarrsssing. :help:

Typical Fedmug performance in a non Slam match. At least he won this time.

another non GS event where Fed is gonna piss about until the eventual loss

take your pick from Baggy/Robredo or Roddick in next few rounds

Shouldnt have actually been this close. Federer won 111 points to Hanescu's 85. That sort of discrepancy normally leads to a straight set victory, but Federer's level was much higher in the 1st and 3rd set than the 2nd set. In any case, Hanescu served 76% first serves, so I suppose that kept it close.

Just another day at the office for the G.O.A.T.

There simply aren’t enough words in the English lexicon to describe this man. After he eclipses Pete’s total weeks at #1 on June 14th, the only thing left for him are two more Wimbledon titles, to yet again, transcend and outshine the great Pete Sampras.

All Hail the King.

All Hail Roger Federer.

I almost want Baghdatis to win in the next round. I don't really think Federer cares at all about non Grand Slam events, and just shows up for the sake of his fans.

In fact, I don't think Federer cares about Grand Slams anymore either - he only cares about the 23 consecutive semi-final streak, and once he gets into the semis, he suddenly realises that he could win the whole thing. Then he tries to play properly.

Poor guy really. Motivation is gone. Can't say I blame him - isn't it his wedding annivesary coming up? And also his 2 kids must be well past 6 months old now. Tough times.

Winning a set in a tie-break was like an orgasm for Hanescu, he couldn't care less in the third.

Federer played really well in thee first and third set. His level decreased in the second, but still almost won it in straight sets. He was awesome at net :) (except in the tie break). Credit to Hanescu though, for not choking in the tie break. He played really well, and I think that his aim was just to take one set off Federer. I don't think he believed that he could win it (judging by his performance in the third).

Hanescu played so well in that second set! He was really on fire, penetrating the court on his forehands and attacking Fed's second serves with ease. Not sure what switched before the third set, because we went down quickly in the end.

Federer looked very wayward and disinterested at times.

Yep. Nonsense. There is a RECORD at stake here, Sampras' # of weeks at #1, and I'm bloody sure he cares about that - A LOT.

Hopefully this will be like the Ferrer match in Cincy last year and Fed goes on to the title.

He does have a pretty easy path forward.

I'm almost certain that was an attempt at sarcasm.

I would also argue that he cares about MS1000's since he is so close to equalling and breaking Agassi's record. Although this is one record that likely won't stand long with Nadal right behind at 15.

It all boils down to Federer just being vulnerable in the best of 3 format.

Federer was working on his James Blake impression for most of the match. Note to Fed: not a good idea.

Taking it too seriously not necessarility wins you the match! I think he is doing the right thing by playing casual for the love of game. I thin he cares about the slams. He will until 2012 olympics or a CYGS.

I just want to see if Fed puts some work into this tournament. He's been getting some questions about his masters performance over the last 2 years, whether he cares enough about them.
Time for him to play these tournaments seriously.

Hey Fed, your supposed to be the GOAT, get out there and do your job!!! :wavey:

I actually think it's great he had a 2 hour match. Baghdatis is inconsistent but a solid player. With Roger being out with that lung infection and not playing since the Australian Open, it's good to get a match to work out the kinks before he encounter a decent player.

Federer has struggled and looked scratchy against lesser players in early rounds of tournaments for as long as I've been watching him! I can't believe people are pretending to be surprised that he did what he has been doing consistently for the last 8 years: winning by raising his level a little above his opponent's.

Not really. But the span of players just outside the top looks hungrier for sure.
