Thread similar to "Funny Fotos", but instead of funny, we post here tennis photos where the photographer has done a brilliant job.

I'll be partial to pics of Roger at Roland Garros 2009. Everything in that event (especially the outfit - light blue, grey, hint of orange) was perfect and made for epic photographs.

Of course, feel free to post your own.

I expect a lot of Wimbledon pics. Tennis stars minus advertisements in the backgrounds makes for great photos.

Well one of my fav tennis pictures ever:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y35/CG_Brouwer/RogerFederer/light.jpg

A very striking scene, Feds waiting at the net to congratulate Rafa with his Wimbledon victory. The disappointment drips from his face, beautifully illustrated by the light shining around him. The photographer really 'caught the moment'.
And it isn't even close to 'technically perfect', but the flashlight artefacts only make it even more dramatic. What an awesome job. Should I ever be able to make such a picture, I'd be very proud of it. :worship:

this is one of my favorite shots. i think the perspective, lighting, the row of heads, the whole set-up just captures a bit of the dramatic feel of the moment. i also like the little visual treats like how the shadow of his legs could be making an upside-down W and how his knee tape seems to run in line with the chalk. great idea for a thread, by the way!

A brilliant idea for a thread, thanks for starting it! :)
The inherent gracefulness of the sport of tennis does make for stunning photo moments, it's great having a thread to be able to appreciate that in.
And though most(uhm, 90%?) of the photos I find beautiful that I have saved are of Roger :o , I do have a few of the non-Fedal variety. :p

Some are more interesting because they capture a moment rather than beautiful, but they've all made me stop and take notice for some reason.

Gonzalez in RG'09 SF - the torture of clay
http://i42.tinypic.com/fk1fea.jpg

Robredo, last year, I think in Miami?
This one captures the frustration of the moment perfectly.

I really like the lights in this one, it lends itself to photoshop manipulation beautifully. Santoro in AO '99. You can almost feel the AO heat in there.
Can't find it without the watermark. :(
http://i40.tinypic.com/10h3rzk.jpg

Also, pretty much EVERY SINGLE photo taken at last year's Madrid event, by a photographer whose flickr I can't find anymore. :(
It made the Madrid venue look like indoor clay theatre.
This one is one of my favourites:
(It's Djokovic, if you can't recognize those blue shoes immediately. :p)

Yeah I just realised when I looked at it again (and my mind processed what match it was lol!), but it kinda looks like that soft, hazy light Wimbledon manages to get sometimes. Flash photography mostly looks horrible so kudos to that photographer!

Just an incredible split second captured perfectly. I love how the flash makes it all look so real and immediate. Rafa's emotion is incredible, and you can see the hand placed to support himself before he falls flat on his back.

Exactly. It's not merely about just 'technically perfect shots of a perfect tennis moment' per se, but also about pictures that tell a major story, like these pictures do.

As for this particular matter,

I really liked that second pic a lot better than the first one but I can't truly explain why. I guess it has to do with the expression on Roger's face, the messy long hair, the apparent spontainity of the situation and the cold wheather of Europe I presume.

This one's fantastic. Again, it 'tells a story' and that's what I like to see in pictures most of all - not just amazing ballet dancer-shots or a radiant victor at a tournament, but even more, these small moments of devastation, well-caught by the on-going photographer.

This picture just oozes disappointment, sadness, loneliness after some dreadful defeat. Great job by the photographer (even if I think Dmitri himself might not be as pleased with is as the artistically-inspired watchers of this picture :p) :yeah:

The other side of the coin for Dima. This was after he defeated Roddick in a dramatic five setter to advance to the finals in the DC.

It was a mixed feeling. I was going to save that kiss for the finals if we won, but when Igor ran out onto the court after my match and I saw his golden locks fluttering through the air, “Dancing Queen” by ABBA rang in my head. It was so romantic!!! All I heard was, “Dancing quuueeeen…..” and time froze still! Our lips locked, dizziness filled my entire body and I felt like I was floating on air. I bet Mark Wahlberg knows exactly what I mean. It’s a feeling that money can’t buy, “Anybody could be that guuuuuuy…Night is young and the music’s hiiiiigh… with a bit of rock music, everything is fine…” I could have played another five-setter after that scene, “…Only seventeeeeen… feel the beat from the tamboooouriiiineeen… Oh yeaaaaah…”

Dima wrote that on his blog

Great selection of photos. :)

The Tursunov one is very telling, definitely.
I recall reading many articles about how life on tour is only remotely "glamorous" if you're around the top50,
outside of that it's just grind and a lot of disappointment, particularly on the Challenger and Futures circuits,
and that photo encapsulates that pretty well.

Have to agree with you here. I hoped for this thread to become a thread showing awesome pictures either showing 'technically perfection', or pics showing a 'dramatic story', not just... nice shots of whoever a player - as those are to be found in abundancy in that whoever-a-players' forum.

well whatever floats one's boat I guess. Keep them coming, I enjoy them anyways. :)

I hate to sound pedantic but

brilliant photography isnt pictures of playing hitting balls

thats weak

a "brilliant" photo should tell a story... more than what the photo is saying

for example:

i hate to pimp out my own photo selections but

each of my pictures tells a story... you can read into it. it works on multiple levels, i carefully chose each one, its really wonderfully selected (if i do say so myself)

i didn't just think, hey, nice picture of a backhand

in fact, the one picture of the gasquet backhand tells a unique story in itself... Richard's chest out, his arms fully extended in a text book manner- the puffed up chest- a french rooster in full roar even- hitting the most eloquent of shots, with the poise God only seems to gift to the french

I struggle to see how Wikipedia screen shots of players' results counts as brilliant photography. But to each their own.

You have a point, but you don't take into consideration that everyone reads an image's symbolism and aesthetic differently, not everyone sees the same thing in the exact same shot. What's irrelevant to one person might be very telling and symbolic to another, every photo here was probably posted for a reason. Just enjoy what's presented, why question the validity of it.

That top one of Andy is exquisite. I always get the impression that over and beyond providing protection from the sun's glare, that hat allows Andy to hide his more raw emotions from the opponent and the public. He's having a thoughtful moment in this one - perhaps assessing a point badly played or contemplating a next move. Add to that the falling drop of perspiration from the rim of the hat and you have classic Andy.

Ljubo and Sod - the thrill and intensity of competitive tennis.

Thanks Harmless. :)

:worship:

Yeah, that's what happens when you don't double check non-tennis news sources.
It was against Almagro actually. I wonder how Nando would feel being mistaken for Almagro by a major image provider. :tape: :p
I'll correct it.:haha: Wow, I feel sick now, I mean Nando is hot! Almugro is...

A few more, from Miami.
And 3 of Berdych.

A few more old ones, since I'm picspamming already. :p

Aaaages ago, back when Rafa wore the sleeveless, and JMDP had long hair.
I think I originally saved because of the visible height difference, and how it illustrates that theory that a few have stated that the new gen. players keep getting taller and taller, and that in the future it will be near impossible to stay on a high level in pro tennis if you're under 190cm.
Also it's kind of... cute. :p
