back from the courts
here are the results with some quick impression
Mayer f.-Minar 7-6 6-3: best match of the day so far; Mayer had a slow start, but then found his easy shots. Both players played too good but i had the sensation that Mayer is another level of play, something near top 30 Atp
Del Bonis-Brzezicki 7-6 6-2: much better form from Del Bonis compared to last week. He was moving better, feeling confident. Brzezicki gave a little fight, but his tennis is not enough good at the moment
Ramirez Hidalgo-Schukin 6-2 6-3 : Ramirez was too fit and healthy, never gave an unforced error in all match. Yuri too tired and with low stamina.
Guez-Huta Galung 6-2 6-4: Nothing special from the french, just smart tactics and no unforced errors. Huta Galung was tired, he didn't get well near the ball. The same match played in another day would have had the same result but for Huta.
Ungur-Ouahab 7-6 6-4: the second best match i saw. Really good level from Ungur compared to last weeks. Ouahab seemed tired, but didn't give up the fight. Ungur is increasing his form.
Arnaboldi-Naso 3-6 6-3 6-4: three hours of fight but not a great match. Two good futures players IMO
Klizan-Hernych 6-4 7-6: I expected more from Klizan on clay, after his good performance in Casablanca. Hernych is clearly unconfortable on clay. Lots of unforced from both players.
Koellerer-Rosol 6-0 6-3: Koellerer getting better and Rosol having a bad day.

back from the courts
here are the results with some quick impression
You are the real hero here, not some low level tennis players ;) So if Del Bonis looks fresh in the early rounds he maybe can even beat Gil :o (and fade like a cheap tent when he gets tired as the event goes). But I still think Gil wins... Brzezicki most likely was just crap, he'd probably even miss to put an egg on a pan these days...

thanks nathii...somehow i've been a hero on the Tc Garden tennis courts too!
i played there two times: when i was a kid in a Junior Team Competition (i was not so fast on the court due to a little overweight, a mix between the chubby Lamine and the someday not moving Del Bonis, but i won) and then in third division (they scheduled matches on sunday morning at 9:00 a.m., and i was recovering from saturday night celebrations!!! Lost single and double causing desperation among my team-mates)
some little curiosity: Ungur is in the Fanucci team and walks around and talks a lot with Bracciali and Volandri
the cechs make group also: Vanek, Rosol, Hernych, Minar are always together exchanging advices and cheering each other during the matches
unfortunately for them, yesterday was a tremendous waterloo, with only Ivo Minar playing a decent tennis

p.s. i've got a little scoop for all of you
i heard Fanucci(volandri's coach) discussing and waving arms in the hair; he was having a quarrel for the fact that Volandri didn't get a wild card for the Roma Master 1000
or so it seemed to me
it's a little shame after he defeated Gasquet, Federer and Berdych reaching Semifinals in 2007...

Thanks for your news. It's always good to know details about matches.

Two consecutive weeks of good tennis in Roma, enjoy it. Ciao!

it's really a pleasure to enjoy those tournies in Rome's springtime
beautiful locations, good looking girls (but i can only watch, else my girlfriend kills me) and some unknown (but only for the masses cheering for Nadal or Federer) first class tennis! Ciao!

Thanks  Somebody adviced me I should use my female charms to get more reports from you, but you mention your gf too often and I am shy to even try . That's a pity, because in private I can be very magnetic. By the way my cousin is engaged to an Italian, she lives in Cagliari.

Of course Volandri would deserve a WC especially with that challenger win (and maybe second to come).

First of all i have to say that the wild cards for Rome Master 1000 were not official; Volandri's coach only supposed he didn't get it
Koellerer-Veic 6-1 6-2: Koellerer confirmed my impression of a perfect health and stamina condition. Of course we know he is not Borg, but he is back one of the toughest to beat on clay. Veic was kidding during the second set, giving an imitation of Crazy Dany at every change of court.
Mayer-Arnaboldi 6-2 6-3: relaxed training with a Futures' player for Florian
Ungur-Guez 1-6 6-4 7-6: Ungur just didn't want to work hard in first set. He lost five games from 40-15, or 0-40 and 15-40. Tactic to beat Guez was clear and easy; change rotation on the ball and speed, then close the point. Guez is absolutely not a clay court player, he can't stand top spin on his backhand. Ungur wanted to push hard the ball and Guez made his game of back to back player.
Second set Ungur played decent and went 4-1. Then fell asleep again for a 4-4. Then closed 6-4. Third set was awful from Adrian: 5-2 Guez without struggling a single point. Then he finally returned to match playing his real tennis for a come back to 6-5. In tie-break we saw the real Ungur for an easy 7-3.
The guy is mentally low in many parts of the match, thinking his talent will resolve it all. He plays his best only when everything seems lost.
My conclusions are: an incredible effort for a match that he could have closed 6-3 6-3.
More reports to come...

Brands-Bracciali 4-6 7-6 6-2: saw great part of the match. Bracciali was able to return Brands' big first serve for two sets. Then he often found the big german unprepared to move along the baseline, expecially in the backhand side. Heard Trevisan complain about his chances versus Brands a couple weeks ago in Monza, but coach Fanucci said that the courts were faster round there. Many players made comments about the fact that Brands is overrated and i partially agree. Once you return the serve, keeping the rallies deep and long on the baseline you've got him.
Bracciali made a lot of breaks, but unfortunately he exhausted his stamina (which is not going to last more than a hour and half) just before he could close second set in which he was a break up.
Bracciali made it all, the good and the bad.

Machado-Ancic 4-6 6-4 7-5: best match of the day. Mario played a wonderful tennis until 6-4 4-4. He was serving too good both first and second serve. Machado was frustrated because he couldn't return. Then Ancic lost himself in some long rally. Many break and re-break points at 6-4 4-4, and 6-4 4-5.
Mario lost his stamina on first serve and had to play very often on second; some extraordinary rally have been played at the end of the set, with Machado making a drop shot that almost returned in his court.
I was beside Mario's brother Ivica, that is coaching him, and we both had the impression that the match was over at Machado-Ancic 4-6 6-4 *3-0. Then something went wrong for Rui, but most of all i'd like to think that Mario is on the way to a big come back (not on clay IMO).

Ramirez Hidalgo-Millot 6-0 6-2: Ramirez in untouchable condition, facing a Futures' hard court medium player the size of Danny De Vito (short, not fat) with a gorgeous girlfriend.
I was wandering in the players lounge and found him in a relaxed good mood telling some jokes with his mate Brzezicki.

Del Bonis-Gil 3-6 6-1 6-4: big struggle, good tennis. DelBo displaying heavy shots compared to the light and smart Gil. Frederico moving well along the court, but the argie conquered little by little his dominance pushing Gil backwards.

Volandri-Klizan 6-3 4-6 6-1: did not watch the match but...saw Volandri relaxed and confident spending the whole time at the cell phone, while the solitary guy Klizan (which i never saw talking with anybody) prepared the match listening heavy metal in his headphones trying the shots in the air

...and that's all for today

for any attempt to corrupt me, private messaging is good!!!

First of all, grazie mile Frank for your reports again.

I'm still wondering myself how Machado could choke on this way. Going 4-0 up in 3rd set against a weak phisically rival...and he was about to lose.

What happened? I guess Machado did a lot UE and his serve was down... but it's so strange. Then, when all was almost lost suddenly reacted and held to love... broke and closed the match. How was Ancic's play in this 3rd set?
Am I right on my thoughts?

Great reports. Should have taken a picture of Millot's girlfriend :p

And I don't think anyone has any misconceptions that Daniel Brands offers much from the baseline, but the fact of the matter is you are gonna beat a lot of people when your best shot is the most important shot in the entire game.....

First of all you have to consider that the whole match was made of an high level tennis.
Machado did not choke, he is not that kind of player, else he would have finally lost.
It may happen sometimes that you hurry too much to close when you think that you will play every day and that your opponent is over.
Machado is not Karlovic: he needs to build every point to the last and made some unforced.
Mario was mentally in the match stimulating himself to fight and continued to serve good, volleying and trying winners.
In the last few games Machado came back with precision and Mario had to give up.
He paid five-six games to recover the stamina after long rallies in second set and this always happened to him on clay even when he was number 7 Atp.

In Brands' case you may think he is gonna beat a lot of people but only in challengers.
In top 50 Atp you find two categories: those who serve better than him and return slightly better, and those with a great return to the serve and he is gonna lose with both IMO.
