Fresh as a daisy or lacking in match practice (or both)? I'm worried by his early exit in Dubai, and hope he gets an easy draw for the first couple of rounds.

I must confess, I've always liked Seppi - his calmness, his composure, his resilience... but I love grouchy Andy better ;) At least the match was more competitive than indicated by the scoreline, always good to be tested in the initial rounds.

Andy has got such a great first serve - unfortunately, too often he has to resort to that punishable second serve. Life could be so much easier if he found that first serve more consistently and held games more comfortably. But, he is making a concerted effort to make adjustments to his game, just a matter of it coming all together on the big occasions.

Yes he does. I feel like he's trying to bolt on extra aggression but it's at war with the cautious aspects of his game and he's not instinctively playing, he's having to think about what's he's doing out there and it doesn't seem to be flowing like it used to.

I've always appreciated Andy's game style, fully aware that being aggressive does not come to him naturally. Some people call it pushing - but there are so many subtleties to his game that he never bores me. I like that he's taking in constructive criticism about being more aggressive especially in grand slams, but it's a gradual transition and will not happen overnight. In the meanwhile, just do what he does best in best of 3 set formats, what has brought him considerable success in the past. And keep working on that first serve...

Good luck against Soderling.

Good post Turquoise. I personally wouldn't even think of calling his game style "pushing". He constructs his points so well, he's not waiting for the opponent to makes UEs, he makes them make them (oh, I love it). I look up to his game plan as I believe variation in shots, length, zones and power is the ultimate tennis intelligence, and it's so beautiful to watch.

I know everyone thinks Andy has played badly this tournament but I just think he hasn't been tested yet. In the first few rounds of Oz he didnt look that great, but he raised his game when he faced a tough oppenant.

This is the perfect oppenant for Andy to play atm we'll get a real idea where he is at with his game.

If he can't attack his way through Soderling (and he can't), and he can't defend his way through Soderling (and right now that's looking a tough ask) then he can only try and wait Soderling out and hope for a dip.

That's not a good place to be, fate out of your hands.

I still really think that AO defeat has hurt him badly mentally. His confidence confidence just isn't there, and his attitude is disappointing.

I hope when they hit the clay, where Andy's own expectations are naturally lower, he can get a few results that build him back up again.

Of course I'm not counting him out of this match/tournament. If he can claw his way back into this, he'd be the favourite to get to the final and win the whole thing.

And there's the break, another nothing backhand slice lands 5 feet long.

Well the good news is that this may well be over soon.

Soderling is giving nothing away today and Andy's feeling very generous.

How many Indian Wells blow outs has Andy had now...

08- Djokovic

scoobs
03-20-2010, 12:51 AM
compression shorts, far too long, it's like Agassi, next Andy will be wearing a weave.

Chokerling has entered the building come on Andy take advantage.

scoobs
03-20-2010, 01:19 AM
Yep, total choke but Andy had to take advantage still - so many players nearly choke but still win it there.

Good response to this by Soderling though.

40-30 from 0-30

scoobs

tiebreak.

that will have helped Soderling a lot, he totally steadied the ship in that game.

Deserved, Andy was shitty today and played a number of the big points poorly.

Soderling played, apart from that 2 game passage, an excellent, controlled, aggressive and contained match.

Well my expectations for Miami are right down as of now.

Depending on his draw he should be good for a QF but after that all bets are off again.

Andi-M
03-20-2010, 02:17 AM
Yeh Miami not looking good. Professional burnout I think to be honest he is not enjoying the game clearly even when winning there isn't much positive coming from him.

I do think the clay will be a turning point. I think IW and Miami are awesome but they are the only masters that arent used as prepartion for a big event. At least once the clay hits he'll have RG to focus on right now he's playing to defend points. He just needs a new focus i think.

I'm not sure what he needs right now....new coach? new goal? new...what? But something's really not right.

Andi-M
03-20-2010, 02:48 AM
New coach idea is a good one does 'Yes' man Miles really provide Andy with the inspiration and positiveness he requires. Andy is very negative person and he needs to be around people that will refuse to accept his attitude, and will have the balls to tell him what they think.

I think Miles should be around because Andy likes him and is comfortable with him. He needs to be around people who he feels relaxed around and I wouldnt want to change it but, I'd like to see him work with Gil Reyes for a bit I know he's not a tennis coach forsee, but he is such a positive chracter and has worked wonders for Agassi and Verdasco. A different positive outlook is all Andy needs he has all the talent in the world.

I really wouldn't like that.

I'm sure it's an option for him, now he's with Adidas. Maybe he could even get Cahill.

Did you have high expectations from IW? I mean, when I saw him play his first two matches, I knew he wouldn't win

Well my expectations for Miami are right down as of now.

Depending on his draw he should be good for a QF but after that all bets are off again.

He needs to get back to what he used to do, without trying to outpower opponents who do that better than he does

I'll only do it if no other brave soul steps forward. :)

Well he made it to the Aussie Open final without the old ball and chain, and according to the commentary last night, he's living it up in the single life of a tennis player (I read that as code for banging chicks), so I don't know if that's the problem here.

Andy Murray, manwhore. Love it!

But yeah, he didn't need Kim to make another Slam final and really I've always thought people overrate the impact a girlfriend/wife has on a players game. Plenty of players on tour have wives/girlfriends and they don't have a fraction of Andy's results.
